Black Holes and Random Variables

We formulate an avatar of the Fyodorov-Hiary-Keating conjecture for black hole microstate counts in quantum gravity. By holography, this implies sharp bounds on interval counts of high-dimension primary operators in conformal field theory. The extremal fluctuations of these counts are characterized by a random variable, with a prescribed tail distribution. At large $N$, these order-one erratic fluctuations set a quantitative limit on the resolution of the semiclassical AdS gravitational path integral. Gaussian random models for state counts arise naturally in this context; we express the phenomenon of erratic $N$-dependence in AdS/CFT as a decorrelation property of these models. Our broader point is to suggest that AdS black hole microstate spectra and their field theory duals should exhibit the extreme value statistics of random matrices, lying in the universality class of Gaussian log-correlated fields.

An $L$-function Approach to Two-Dimensional Conformal Field Theory

We introduce a framework for two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) in the language of analytic number theory. Attached to the torus partition function of every two-dimensional CFT is a self-dual, degree-4 $L$-function of root number $\varepsilon=1$, with a universal gamma factor determined by $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and local conformal invariance. Due to the richness of CFT operator spectra, these are not, in general, standard $L$-functions. We explicate their analytic structure, exploring the interplay of the Hadamard product over non-trivial zeros with the generalized Dirichlet series over CFT scalar primary conformal dimensions. We derive a zero sum rule in terms of the spectrum, and a global zero density bound in terms of the spectral gap. Convergence of the series representation implies square root cancellation of the degeneracies; we relate this to random matrix behavior of high-energy level spacings. Random matrix universality of the CFT implies "Riemann zeta universality" of the $L$-function: an average relation between the $L$-function on the critical line and Riemann zeta on the 1-line. This in turn yields a subconvexity bound. For a compact free boson, the $L$-function is a product of Riemann zeta functions times an analytic factor. Extensions to correlator $L$-functions and spinning spectra are briefly discussed. In the course of this work, we are led to sharpen the notion of random matrix universality in two-dimensional CFTs. We formulate a precise version of the following standalone conjecture, logically independent of $L$-functions: in unitary, compact Virasoro CFTs with central charge $c>1$, fixed-spin primary spectra at high energy are asymptotically simple, with random extreme gap statistics.

Modular-invariant random matrix theory and AdS${}_3$ wormholes

We develop a non-perturbative definition of RMT${}_2$: a generalization of random matrix theory that is compatible with the symmetries of two-dimensional conformal field theory. Given any random matrix ensemble, its $n$-point spectral correlations admit a prescribed modular-invariant lift to RMT${}_2$, which moreover reduce to the original random matrix correlators in a near-extremal limit. Central to the prescription is a presentation of random matrix theory in Mellin space, which lifts to two dimensions via the $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ spectral decomposition employed in previous work. As a demonstration we perform the explicit RMT${}_2$ lift of two-point correlations of the GUE Airy model. We propose that in AdS$_3$ pure gravity, semiclassical amplitudes for off-shell $n$-boundary torus wormholes with topology $\Sigma_{0,n} \times S^1$ are given by the RMT${}_2$ lift of JT gravity wormhole amplitudes. For the three-boundary case, we identify a gravity calculation which matches the RMT${}_2$ result.

A Rigorous Holographic Bound on AdS Scale Separation

We give an elementary proof of the following property of unitary, interacting four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories: at large central charge $c$, there exist at least $\sqrt{c}$ single-trace, scalar superconformal primary operators with dimensions $\Delta \lesssim \sqrt{c}$ (suppressing multiplicative logarithmic corrections). This follows from a stronger, more refined bound on the spectral density in terms of the asymptotic growth rate of the central charge. The proof employs known results on the structure of Coulomb branch operators. Interpreted holographically, this bounds the possible degree of scale separation in semiclassical AdS$_5$ half-maximal supergravity. In particular, the bulk must contain an infinite tower of charged scalar states of energies parametrically below the large black hole threshold, $E_{\rm BH} \sim c$. We address the extreme case of AdS$_5$ pure supergravity, ruling it out as the asymptotic limit of certain sequences in theory space, though the general question remains open.

AdS$_3$ Pure Gravity and Stringy Unitarity

We construct a unitary, modular-invariant torus partition function of a two-dimensional conformal field theory with a Virasoro primary spectral gap of $\Delta_* = \frac{c-1}{12}$ above the vacuum. The twist gap is identical, apart from two states $\mathcal{O}_*$ with spin scaling linearly in the central charge $c$. These states admit an AdS$_3$ interpretation as strongly coupled strings. All other states are black hole microstates.

AdS$_3$/RMT$_2$ Duality

We introduce a framework for quantifying random matrix behavior of 2d CFTs and AdS$_3$ quantum gravity. We present a 2d CFT trace formula, precisely analogous to the Gutzwiller trace formula for chaotic quantum systems, which originates from the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ spectral decomposition of the Virasoro primary density of states. An analogy to Berry's diagonal approximation allows us to extract spectral statistics of individual 2d CFTs by coarse-graining, and to identify signatures of chaos and random matrix universality. This leads to a necessary and sufficient condition for a 2d CFT to display a linear ramp in its coarse-grained spectral form factor. Turning to gravity, AdS$_3$ torus wormholes are cleanly interpreted as diagonal projections of squared partition functions of microscopic 2d CFTs. The projection makes use of Hecke operators. The Cotler-Jensen wormhole of AdS$_3$ pure gravity is shown to be extremal among wormhole amplitudes: it is the minimal completion of the random matrix theory correlator compatible with Virasoro symmetry and $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-invariance. We call this MaxRMT: the maximal realization of random matrix universality consistent with the necessary symmetries. Completeness of the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ spectral decomposition as a trace formula allows us to factorize the Cotler-Jensen wormhole, extracting the microscopic object $Z_{\rm RMT}(\tau)$ from the coarse-grained product. This captures details of the spectrum of BTZ black hole microstates. $Z_{\rm RMT}(\tau)$ may be interpreted as an AdS$_3$ half-wormhole. We discuss its implications for the dual CFT and modular bootstrap at large central charge.

Exact Large Charge in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and Semiclassical String Theory

In four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $SU(N)$, we present a closed-form solution for a family of integrated four-point functions involving stress tensor multiplet composites of arbitrary R-charge. These integrated correlators are shown to be equivalent to a one-dimensional semi-infinite lattice of harmonic oscillators with nearest-neighbor interactions, evolving over the fundamental domain of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. The solution, exceptionally simple in an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-invariant eigenbasis, is exact in the R-charge $p$, rank $N$, and complexified gauge coupling $\tau$. This permits a systematic and non-perturbative large charge expansion for any $N$ and $\tau$. Especially novel is a double-scaled "gravity regime" in which $p \sim N^2 \gg 1$, holographically dual to a large charge regime of semiclassical type IIB string theory in AdS$_5\, \times$ S$^5$. Our results in this limit provide a holographic computation of integrated semiclassical string amplitudes at arbitrary string coupling, including an emergent string scale with a large charge dressing factor. We compare to extremal correlators in superconformal QCD, for which we predict new genus expansions at large charge scaling with $N$.

Integrated Correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM via $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ Spectral Theory

We perform a systematic study of integrated four-point functions of half-BPS operators in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $SU(N)$. These observables, defined by a certain spacetime integral of $\langle\mathcal{O}_2\mathcal{O}_2\mathcal{O}_p\mathcal{O}_p\rangle$ where $\mathcal{O}_p$ is a superconformal primary of charge $p$, are known to be computable by supersymmetric localization, yet are non-trivial functions of the complexified gauge coupling $\tau$. We find explicit and remarkably simple results for several classes of these observables, exactly as a function of $N$ and $\tau$. Their physical and formal properties are greatly illuminated upon employing the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ spectral decomposition: in this S-duality-invariant eigenbasis, the integrated correlators are fixed simply by polynomials in the spectral parameter. These polynomials are determined recursively by linear algebraic equations relating different $N$ and $p$, such that all integrated correlators are ultimately fixed in terms of the integrated stress tensor multiplets in the $SU(2)$ theory. Our computations include the full matrix of integrated correlators at low values of $p$, and a certain infinite class involving operators of arbitrary $p$. The latter satisfy an open lattice chain equation for all $N$, reminiscent of the Toda equation obeyed by extremal correlators in $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal theories. We compute ensemble averages of these observables and analyze our solutions at large $N$, confirming and predicting features of semiclassical AdS$_5\, \times$ S$^5$ supergravity amplitudes.

Harnessing S-Duality in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM & Supergravity as $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-Averaged Strings

We develop a new approach to extracting the physical consequences of S-duality of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) and its string theory dual, based on $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ spectral theory. We observe that CFT observables $\mathcal{O}$, invariant under $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ transformations of a complexified gauge coupling $\tau$, admit a unique spectral decomposition into a basis of square-integrable functions. This formulation has direct implications for the analytic structure of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM data, both perturbatively and non-perturbatively in all parameters. For example, $k$-instanton sectors are uniquely determined by the zero- and one-instanton sectors, and Borel summable series around $k$-instantons have convergence radii with simple $k$-dependence. In large $N$ limits, we derive the existence and scaling of non-perturbative effects, which we exhibit for certain $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM observables. An elegant benchmark for these techniques is the integrated four-point function conjecturally determined by [arXiv:2102.09537] for all $\tau$ for $SU(N)$ gauge group; we derive and elucidate its form. These results have ramifications for holography. We explain how $\langle\mathcal{O}\rangle$, the ensemble average over the $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric conformal manifold with respect to the Zamolodchikov measure, is cleanly isolated by the spectral decomposition. We prove that the large $N$ limit of $\langle\mathcal{O}\rangle$ equals the large $N$, large 't Hooft coupling limit of $\mathcal{O}$. Holographically speaking, $\langle\mathcal{O}\rangle = \mathcal{O}_{\rm sugra}$, its value in type IIB supergravity on AdS$_5 \times$ S$^5$. This result, which extends to all orders in $1/N$, embeds ensemble averaging into the traditional AdS/CFT paradigm. The statistics of the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ ensemble exhibit both perturbative and non-perturbative $1/N$ effects.

Harmonic analysis of 2d CFT partition functions

We apply the theory of harmonic analysis on the fundamental domain of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ to partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We decompose the partition function of $c$ free bosons on a Narain lattice into eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of worldsheet moduli space $\mathbb H/SL(2,\mathbb Z)$, and of target space moduli space $O(c,c;\mathbb Z)\backslash O(c,c;\mathbb R)/O(c)\times O(c)$. This decomposition manifests certain properties of Narain theories and ensemble averages thereof. We extend the application of spectral theory to partition functions of general two-dimensional conformal field theories, and explore its meaning in connection to AdS$_3$ gravity. An implication of harmonic analysis is that the local operator spectrum is fully determined by a certain subset of degeneracies.

A CFT Distance Conjecture

We formulate a series of conjectures relating the geometry of conformal manifolds to the spectrum of local operators in conformal field theories in $d>2$ spacetime dimensions. We focus on conformal manifolds with limiting points at infinite distance with respect to the Zamolodchikov metric. Our central conjecture is that all theories at infinite distance possess an emergent higher-spin symmetry, generated by an infinite tower of currents whose anomalous dimensions vanish exponentially in the distance. Stated geometrically, the diameter of a non-compact conformal manifold must diverge logarithmically in the higher-spin gap. In the holographic context our conjectures are related to the Distance Conjecture in the swampland program. Interpreted gravitationally, they imply that approaching infinite distance in moduli space at fixed AdS radius, a tower of higher-spin fields becomes massless at an exponential rate that is bounded from below in Planck units. We discuss further implications for conformal manifolds of superconformal field theories in three and four dimensions.

Discreteness and Integrality in Conformal Field Theory

Various observables in compact CFTs are required to obey positivity, discreteness, and integrality. Positivity forms the crux of the conformal bootstrap, but understanding of the abstract implications of discreteness and integrality for the space of CFTs is lacking. We systematically study these constraints in two-dimensional, non-holomorphic CFTs, making use of two main mathematical results. First, we prove a theorem constraining the behavior near the cusp of integral, vector-valued modular functions. Second, we explicitly construct non-factorizable, non-holomorphic cuspidal functions satisfying discreteness and integrality, and prove the non-existence of such functions once positivity is added. Application of these results yields several bootstrap-type bounds on OPE data of both rational and irrational CFTs, including some powerful bounds for theories with conformal manifolds, as well as insights into questions of spectral determinacy. We prove that in rational CFT, the spectrum of operator twists $t\geq {c \over 12}$ is uniquely determined by its complement. Likewise, we argue that in generic CFTs, the spectrum of operator dimensions $\Delta > {c-1\over 12}$ is uniquely determined by its complement, absent fine-tuning in a sense we articulate. Finally, we discuss implications for black hole physics and the (non-)uniqueness of a possible ensemble interpretation of AdS$_3$ gravity.

Model-Dependence of Minimal-Twist OPEs in $d>2$ Holographic CFTs

Following recent work on heavy-light correlators in higher-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with a large central charge $C_T$, we clarify the properties of stress tensor composite primary operators of minimal twist, $[T^m]$, using arguments in both CFT and gravity. We provide an efficient proof that the three-point coupling $\langle \mathcal{O}_L\mathcal{O}_L [T^m]\rangle$, where $\mathcal{O}_L$ is any light primary operator, is independent of the purely gravitational action. Next, we consider corrections to this coupling due to additional interactions in AdS effective field theory and the corresponding dual CFT. When the CFT contains a non-zero three-point coupling $\langle TT \mathcal{O}_L\rangle$, the three-point coupling $\langle \mathcal{O}_L\mathcal{O}_L [T^2]\rangle$ is modified at large $C_T$ if $\langle TT\mathcal{O}_L \rangle \sim \sqrt{C_T}$. This scaling is obeyed by the dilaton, by Kaluza-Klein modes of prototypical supergravity compactifications, and by scalars in stress tensor multiplets of supersymmetric CFTs. Quartic derivative interactions involving the graviton and the light probe field dual to $\mathcal{O}_L$ can also modify the minimal-twist couplings; these local interactions may be generated by integrating out a spin-$\ell \geq 2$ bulk field at tree level, or any spin $\ell$ at loop level. These results show how the minimal-twist OPE coefficients can depend on the higher-spin gap scale, even perturbatively.

Unitarity Methods in AdS/CFT

We develop a systematic unitarity method for loop-level AdS scattering amplitudes, dual to non-planar CFT correlators, from both bulk and boundary perspectives. We identify cut operators acting on bulk amplitudes that put virtual lines on shell, and show how the conformal partial wave decomposition of the amplitudes may be efficiently computed by gluing lower-loop amplitudes. A central role is played by the double discontinuity of the amplitude, which has a direct relation to these cuts. We then exhibit a precise, intuitive map between the diagrammatic approach in the bulk using cutting and gluing, and the algebraic, holographic unitarity method of arXiv:1612.03891 that constructs the non-planar correlator from planar CFT data. Our analysis focuses mostly on four-point, one-loop diagrams -- we compute cuts of the scalar bubble, triangle and box, as well as some one-particle reducible diagrams -- in addition to the five-point tree and four-point double-ladder. Analogies with S-matrix unitarity methods are drawn throughout.

Growing Extra Dimensions in AdS/CFT

What is the dimension of spacetime? We address this question in the context of the AdS/CFT Correspondence. We give a prescription for computing the number of large bulk dimensions, $D$, from strongly-coupled CFT$_d$ data, where "large" means parametrically of order the AdS scale. The idea is that unitarity of 1-loop AdS amplitudes, dual to non-planar CFT correlators, fixes $D$ in terms of tree-level data. We make this observation rigorous by deriving a positive-definite sum rule for the 1-loop double-discontinuity in the flat space/bulk-point limit. This enables us to prove an array of AdS/CFT folklore, and to infer new properties of large $N$ CFTs at strong coupling that ensure consistency of emergent large extra dimensions with string/M-theory. We discover an OPE universality at the string scale: to leading order in large $N$, heavy-heavy-light three-point functions, with heavy operators that are parametrically lighter than a power of $N$, are linear in the heavy conformal dimension. We explore its consequences for supersymmetric CFTs and explain how emergent large extra dimensions relate to a Sublattice Weak Gravity Conjecture for CFTs. Lastly, we conjecture, building on a claim of arXiv:0908.0756, that any CFT with large higher-spin gap and no global symmetries has a holographic hierarchy: $D=d+1$

Quantum Regge Trajectories and the Virasoro Analytic Bootstrap

Every conformal field theory (CFT) above two dimensions contains an infinite set of Regge trajectories of local operators which, at large spin, asymptote to "double-twist" composites with vanishing anomalous dimension. In two dimensions, due to the existence of local conformal symmetry, this and other central results of the conformal bootstrap do not apply. We incorporate exact stress tensor dynamics into the CFT$_2$ analytic bootstrap, and extract several implications for AdS$_3$ quantum gravity. Our main tool is the Virasoro fusion kernel, which we newly analyze and interpret in the bootstrap context. The contribution to double-twist data from the Virasoro vacuum module defines a "Virasoro Mean Field Theory" (VMFT), its spectrum includes a finite number of discrete Regge trajectories, whose dimensions obey a simple formula exact in the central charge $c$ and external operator dimensions. We then show that VMFT provides a baseline for large spin universality in two dimensions: in every unitary compact CFT$_2$ with $c > 1$ and a twist gap above the vacuum, the double-twist data approaches that of VMFT at large spin $\ell$. Corrections to the large spin spectrum from individual non-vacuum primaries are exponentially small in $\sqrt{\ell}$ for fixed $c$. We analyze our results in various large $c$ limits. Further applications include a derivation of the late-time behavior of Virasoro blocks at generic $c$, a refined understanding and new derivation of heavy-light blocks, and the determination of the cross-channel limit of generic Virasoro blocks. We deduce non-perturbative results about the bound state spectrum and dynamics of quantum gravity in AdS$_3$.

Genus-One String Amplitudes from Conformal Field Theory

We explore and exploit the relation between non-planar correlators in ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills, and higher-genus closed string amplitudes in type IIB string theory. By conformal field theory techniques we construct the genus-one, four-point string amplitude in AdS$_5\times S^5$ in the low-energy expansion, dual to an ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills correlator in the 't Hooft limit at order $1/c^2$ in a strong coupling expansion. In the flat space limit, this maps onto the genus-one, four-point scattering amplitude for type II closed strings in ten dimensions. Using this approach we reproduce several results obtained via string perturbation theory. We also demonstrate a novel mechanism to fix subleading terms in the flat space limit of AdS amplitudes by using string/M-theory.
