Transport of Orbital-Angular-Momentum Entanglement through a Turbulent Atmosphere

We demonstrate experimentally how orbital-angular-momentum entanglement of two photons evolves under influence of atmospheric turbulence. We find that the quantum channel capacity is surprisingly robust: Its typical horizontal decay distance is of the order of 2 kilometers, demonstrating the potential of photonic orbital angular momentum for free-space quantum communication in a metropolitan environment.

Observation of narrow Autler-Townes components in the resonant response of a dense atomic gas

We have experimentally studied the reflection of a weak probe beam from a dense atomic potassium vapor in the presence of a strong laser field tuned to the atomic resonance transition. We have observed an Autler-Townes doublet under hitherto unexplored conditions, namely that the Rabi frequency induced by the strong laser field is much smaller than the self-broadened width of the resonance transition of the unexcited vapor. We attribute our observation to a reduction of the atomic decoherence by the strong drive field. We present a theoretical model of nonlinear processes in a dense atomic gas to explain the observed results.

Experimental observation of fractal modes in unstable optical resonators

We use a spatially resolved cavity ring-down technique to show that the 2D eigenmode of an unstable optical cavity has a fractal pattern, i.e. it looks the same at different length scales. In agreement with theory, we find that this pattern has the maximum conceivable roughness, i.e., its fractal dimension is 3.01 plus\minus 0.04. This insight in the nature of unstable cavity eigenmodes may lead to better understanding of wave dynamics in open systems, for both light and matter waves.
