The iterated integrals of ln(1 + x^2)

For a polynomial P, we consider the sequence of iterated integrals of ln P(x). This sequence is expressed in terms of the zeros of P(x). In the special case of ln(1 + x^2), arithmetic properties of certain coefficients arising are described. Similar observations are made for ln(1 + x^3).

Regularity versus complexity in the binary representation of 3^n

We use the grid consisting of bits of 3^n to motivate the definition of 2-adic numbers. Specifically, we exhibit diagonal stripes in the bits of 3^(2^n), which turn out to be the first in an infinite sequence of such structures. Our observations are explained by a 2-adic power series, providing some regularity among the disorder in the bits of powers of 3. Generally, the base-p representation of k^(p^n) has these features.

Non-regularity of floor(alpha + log_k(n))

This paper presents a new proof that if k^alpha is irrational then the sequence floor(alpha + log_k(n)) is not k-regular. Unlike previous proofs, the methods used do not rely on automata or language theoretic concepts. The paper also proves the stronger statement that if k^αis irrational then the generating function in k non-commuting variables associated with floor(alpha + log_k(n)) is not algebraic.

Pattern avoidance in binary trees

This paper considers the enumeration of trees avoiding a contiguous pattern. We provide an algorithm for computing the generating function that counts n-leaf binary trees avoiding a given binary tree pattern t. Equipped with this counting mechanism, we study the analogue of Wilf equivalence in which two tree patterns are equivalent if the respective n-leaf trees that avoid them are equinumerous. We investigate the equivalence classes combinatorially. Toward establishing bijective proofs of tree pattern equivalence, we develop a general method of restructuring trees that conjecturally succeeds to produce an explicit bijection for each pair of equivalent tree patterns.

Counting interesting elections

We provide an elementary proof of a formula for the number of northeast lattice paths that lie in a certain region of the plane. Equivalently, this formula counts the lattice points inside the Pitman--Stanley polytope of an n-tuple.

Iterated primitives of logarithmic powers

The evaluation of iterated primitives of powers of logarithms is expressed in closed form. The expressions contain polynomials with coefficients given in terms of the harmonic numbers and their generalizations. The logconcavity of these polynomials is established.

Bounds on the frequency of 1 in the Kolakoski word

We use a method of Goulden and Jackson to bound freq_1(K), the limiting frequency of 1 in the Kolakoski word K. We prove that |freq_1(K) - 1/2| <= 17/762, assuming the limit exists, and establish the semi-rigorous bound |freq_1(K) - 1/2| <= 1/46.

A natural prime-generating recurrence

For the sequence defined by a(n) = a(n-1) + gcd(n, a(n-1)) with a(1) = 7 we prove that a(n) - a(n-1) takes on only 1s and primes, making this recurrence a rare "naturally occurring" generator of primes. Toward a generalization of this result to an arbitrary initial condition, we also study the limiting behavior of a(n)/n and a transience property of the evolution.
