Modelling DNA Response to THz Radiation

Collective response of DNA to THz electric fields is studied in a simple pair bond model. We confirm, with some caveats, a previous observation of destabilising DNA breather modes and explore the parameter-dependence of these modes. It is shown that breather modes are eliminated under reasonable physical conditions and that thermal effects are significant.

Confinement Models at Finite Temperature and Density

In-medium chiral symmetry breaking in confining potential models of QCD is examined. Past attempts to analyse these models have been hampered by infrared divergences that appear at non-zero temperature. We argue that previous attempts to circumvent this problem are not satisfactory and demonstrate a simple resolution. We also show that the expectation that confining models do not exhibit a chiral phase transition is incorrect. The effect of summing ring diagrams is investigated and we present the first determination of the temperature-density phase diagram for two model systems. We find that observables and the phase structure of the confinement models depend strongly on whether quark polarisation is accounted for. Finally, it appears that standard confinement models cannot adequately describe both hadron phenomenology and in-medium properties of QCD.

The New Heavy Mesons: A Status Report

A survey of the experimental, phenomenological, and theoretical status of the new heavy mesons is presented. States discussed are the $B_c$, $h_c$, $η_c'$, $D_s(2317)$, $D_s(2460)$, X(3872), X(3940), Y(3940), Z(3930), and Y(4260). Quark models for spectra, strong decays, and hadronic interactions are reviewed and used to interpret the new states. New results for strong decay models, bound state decays, mesonic molecules, properties of the X(3872), and the chiral doublet model are also presented.

Molecular Interpretation of the X(3872)

The discovery of the X(3872) in the 3πJ/ψmode is compelling evidence for its molecular nature. A successful prediction of this decay mode and other predictions are reviewed here.

Hyperfine meson splittings: chiral symmetry versus transverse gluon exchange

Meson spin splittings are examined within an effective Coulomb gauge QCD Hamiltonian incorporating chiral symmetry and a transverse hyperfine interaction necessary for heavy quarks. For light and heavy quarkonium systems the pseudoscalar-vector meson spectrum is generated by approximate BCS-RPA diagonalizations. This relativistic formulation includes both S and D waves for the vector mesons which generates a set of coupled integral equations. A smooth transition from the heavy to the light quark regime is found with chiral symmetry dominating the pi-rho mass difference. A reasonable description of the observed meson spin splittings and chiral quantities, such as the quark condensate and the pi mass, is obtained. Similar comparisons with TDA diagonalizations, which violate chiral symmetry, are deficient for light pseudoscalar mesons indicating the need to simultaneously include both chiral symmetry and a hyperfine interaction. The eta_b mass is predicted to be around 9400 MeV consistent with other theoretical expectations and above the unconfirmed 9300 MeV candidate. Finally, for comparison with lattice results, the J reliability parameter is also evaluated.

Diagnostic Decays of the X(3872)

The unusual properties of the X(3872) have led to speculation that it is a weakly bound state of mesons, chiefly $D^0\bar D^{0*}$. Tests of this hypothesis are investigated and it is proposed that measuring the $3πJ/ψ$, $γJ/ψ$, $γψ'$, $\bar K K^*$, and $πρ$ decay modes of the $X$ will serve as a definitive diagnostic of the molecule hypothesis.

Chiral Symmetry and Hyperfine Quark-Antiquark Splittings

We briefly review theoretical calculations for the pseudoscalar-vector meson hyperfine splitting with no open flavor and also report a many body field theoretical effort to assess the impact of chiral symmetry in the choice of effective potentials for relativistic quark models. Our calculations predict the missing eta_b meson to have mass near 9400 $MeV$. The radial excitation $η_c(2S)$ is in agreement with the measurements of the BELLE and most recently BABAR collaborations.

Parity Doubling in the Meson Spectrum

A simple argument for the restoration of parity symmetry high in the hadron spectrum is presented. The restoration scale is estimated to be 2.5 GeV. This in turn implies that typical quark model phenomenology such as scalar confinement or the $^3P_0$ decay model are only useful for low lying states. Minimal requirements for constructing more general phenomenologies are discussed. An additional mass degeneracy between $J^{++}$ and $ J^{--}$ states is shown to occur and an isovector $3^{++}$ state is predicted at roughly 1700 MeV, in contradiction with the naive quark model. Similarly, isovector and isoscalar $4^{--}$ states are predicted at 2000 MeV. Finally, these results imply that Regge trajectories must become nonlinear at high spin.

The Flux Tube Model: Applications, Tests, and Extensions

A review and critique of the Isgur-Paton flux tube model of hadronic physics is presented. This entails a detailed comparison with recent lattice gauge theory results which exposes both the successes and shortcomings of the model. Applications to hybrid masses, meson and hybrid meson decays, hadronic charge radii, the spin-orbit force, baryonic hybrids, and hybrid photocouplings are also discussed. Finally, I comment on the issue of adiabatic surface crossing which appears in both the flux tube model and lattice studies.

Short Range Structure in the X(3872)

It is proposed that the newly discovered X(3872) is a $J^{PC} = 1^{++}$ $D^0\bar D^{0*}$ hadronic resonance stabilized by admixtures of $ωJ/ψ$ and $ρJ/ψ$. A specific model of the state is constructed and tests of its internal structure are suggested via the predicted decay modes $D^0\bar D^0π^0$, $D^0\bar D^0γ$, $π^+π^- J/ψ$, and $π^+π^-π^0 J/ψ$.

Aspects of Confinement: a Brief Review

A brief and biased overview of the phenomenon of confinement in QCD is presented in three parts: (1) the definition of confinement, (2) properties of confinement, (3) ideas of confinement. The second part chiefly consists of a brief review of recent lattice computations related to confinement while the third summarizes some of the current analytical approaches to understanding confinement. These include the Dyson-Schwinger formalism in Landau gauge, Hamiltonian QCD in Coulomb gauge, and the vortex picture of confinement.

A Coulomb Gauge Model of Mesons

A model of mesons which is based on the QCD Hamiltonian in Coulomb gauge is presented. The model relies on a novel quasiparticle basis to improve the reliability of the Fock space expansion. It is also relativistic, yields chiral pions, and is tightly constrained by QCD (quark masses are the only parameters). Applications to hidden flavor mesons yield results which are comparable to phenomenological constituent quark models while revealing the limitations of such models.

The low lying glueball spectrum

The complete low-lying positive charge conjugation glueball spectrum is obtained from QCD. The formalism relies on the construction of an efficient quasiparticle gluon basis for Hamiltonian QCD in Coulomb gauge. The resulting rapidly convergent Fock space expansion is exploited to derive quenched low-lying glueball masses with no free parameters which are in remarkable agreement with lattice gauge theory.

Dissociation of a Heavy Quarkonium at T<T_c

We examine three different ways a heavy quarkonium can dissociate at temperatures below the quark-gluon plasma phase transition temperature T_c: spontaneous dissociation, dissociation by thermalization, and dissociation by collision with hadrons. We evaluate the cross sections for the dissociation of J/psi and Upsilon in collision with pion as a function of temperature, using the quark-interchange model of Barnes and Swanson. We also evaluate the dissociation temperatures for various quarkonia, and the fraction of quarkonium lying above the dissociation threshold as a function of temperature, using an interquark potential inferred from lattice gauge calculations.

Coulomb Gauge QCD, Confinement, and the Constituent Representation

Quark confinement and the genesis of the constituent quark model are examined in nonperturbative QCD in Coulomb gauge. We employ a self-consistent method to construct a quasiparticle basis and to determine the quasiparticle interaction. The results agree remarkably well with lattice computations. They also illustrate the mechanism by which confinement and constituent quarks emerge, provide support for the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement scenario, clarify several perplexing issues in the constituent quark model, and permit the construction of an improved model of low energy QCD.

Chiral Extrapolation, Renormalization, and the Viability of the Quark Model

The relationship of the quark model to the known chiral properties of QCD is a longstanding problem in the interpretation of low energy QCD. In particular, how can the pion be viewed as both a collective Goldstone boson quasiparticle and as a valence quark antiquark bound state where universal hyperfine interactions govern spin splittings in the same way as in the heavy quark systems. We address this issue in a simplified model which; however, reproduces all features of QCD relevant to this problem. A comparison of the many-body solution to our model and the constituent quark model demonstrates that the quark model is sufficiently flexible to describe meson hyperfine splitting provided proper renormalization conditions and correct degrees of freedom are employed consistently.

Hadron-Hadron Interactions in the Constituent Quark Model: Results and Extensions

Hadronic interactions are discussed within the context of the constituent quark model. The "Quark Born Diagram" methodology is outlined, extensive applications to meson-meson and meson-baryon interactions are discussed, and general features of these interactions are highlighted. The second half of this document deals with shortcomings of the quark model approach and methods to overcome them. These include relativistic kinematics, unitarity, nonlocal potentials, coupled channel effects, and the chiral nature of the pion.

Nonperturbative Renormalization and the QCD Vacuum

We present a self consistent approach to Coulomb gauge Hamiltonian QCD which allows one to relate single gluon spectral properties to the long range behavior of the confining interaction. Nonperturbative renormalization is discussed. The numerical results are in good agreement with phenomenological and lattice forms of the static potential.
