Dimensionally-reduced sutured Floer homology as a string homology

We show that the sutured Floer homology of a sutured 3-manifold of the form $(D^2 \times S^1, F \times S^1)$ can be expressed as the homology of a string-type complex, generated by certain sets of curves on $(D^2, F)$ and with a differential given by resolving crossings. We also give some generalisations of this isomorphism, computing "hat" and "infinity" versions of this string homology. In addition to giving interesting elementary facts about the algebra of curves on surfaces, these isomorphisms are inspired by, and establish further, connections between invariants from Floer homology and string topology.

Double bubbles in $S^3$ and $H^3$

We prove the double bubble conjecture in the three-sphere $S^3$ and hyperbolic three-space $H^3$ in the cases where we can apply Hutchings theory: 1) in $S^3$, each enclosed volume and the complement occupy at least 10% of the volume of $S^3$; 2) in $H^3$, the smaller volume is at least 85% that of the larger. A balancing argument and asymptotic analysis reduce the problem in $S^3$ and $H^3$ to some computer checking. The computer analysis has been designed and fully implemented for both spaces.

Totally Geodesic Seifert Surfaces in Hyperbolic Knot and Link Complements II

We generalize the results of [AS], finding large classes of totally geodesic Seifert surfaces in hyperbolic knot and link complements, each the lift of a rigid 2-orbifold embedded in some hyperbolic 3-orbifold. In addition, we provide a uniqueness theorem and demonstrate that many knots cannot possess totally geodesic Seifert surfaces by giving bounds on the width invariant in the presence of such a surface. Finally, we utilize these examples to demonstrate that the Six Theorem is sharp for knot complements in the 3-sphere.

The Double Bubble Problem on the Flat Two-Torus

We characterize the perimeter-minimizing double bubbles on all flat two-tori and, as corollaries, on the flat infinite cylinder and the flat infinite strip with free boundary. Specifically, we show that there are five distinct types of minimizers on flat two-tori, depending on the areas to be enclosed.
