Notes on (-2)-form symmetries

We study $(-2)$-form symmetries of a $d$-dimensional quantum field theory, via a $(-1)$-form symmetry of its $(d+1)$-dimensional Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT), realized by a non-genuine codimension-one defect in the SymTFT bulk attached to a spacetime-filling topological operator. Unlike a $(-1)$-form symmetry of a $d$-dimensional theory, which merely shifts a parameter of the absolute theory, a $(-2)$-form symmetry modifies the SymTFT action, and thereby relates theories whose ordinary global symmetries differ by anomaly data or by the associator data of a non-invertible symmetry. We illustrate the construction in two-dimensional toy models, three-dimensional ABJM-type theories, four-dimensional generalized Yang--Mills theory, and in a fusion-categorical example relating the non-invertible symmetries $\operatorname{Rep}(D_4)$ and $\operatorname{Rep}(Q_8)$. We then develop a club-sandwich realization, in which a quarter-gauging operation interfaces between IR phases of distinct RG flows of a common UV theory, and an alternative realization via nested discrete gauging. Finally, we present a holographic, top-down realization in which the type IIA Romans mass plays the role of a $(-2)$-form background for a three-dimensional Chern--Simons-matter theory, with shifts of the Romans mass realizing shifts of the boundary anomaly coefficients. We also discuss related constructions for coupled bulk--boundary systems.

Schubert line defects in 3d GLSMs, part II: Partial flag manifolds and parabolic quantum polynomials

We construct Schubert line defects in the 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) with target space a partial flag manifold $X={\rm Fl}({\boldsymbol{k}};n)$, generalizing our construction for complete flag manifolds given in a companion paper arXiv:2512.19802 (part I). In the context of the 3d GLSM/quantum K-theory correspondence, the Schubert line defects are constructed as 1d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories coupled to the 3d field theory, and they flow to objects supported on Schubert varieties $X_w \subseteq X$ in the quantum K-theory. The flavored Witten index of the 1d defect is expected to compute the Chern character of $[\mathcal{O}_w]$ -- more precisely, it gives us a polynomial representative of the Schubert class in the quantum K-theory ring. We give strong evidence for this claim by showing in examples that the Witten indices of Schubert defects indeed reproduce a recently-defined set of polynomials that represent the Schubert classes in the Whitney presentation, which we call the parabolic Whitney polynomials. Moreover, upon using the quantum ring relations, we can convert these polynomials into seemingly new polynomials in the Toda presentation, which we call the parabolic quantum Grothendieck polynomials. These new polynomials specialize to known polynomials in various limits, including to the quantum Grothendieck polynomials in the case of the complete flag. In the 2d limit, our construction also realizes the Schubert classes $[X_w]$ in the quantum cohomology ring of the partial flag manifold, and the parabolic quantum Grothendieck polynomials then reduce to previously known parabolic quantum Schubert polynomials.

Schubert line defects in 3d GLSMs, part I: Complete flag manifolds and quantum Grothendieck polynomials

We construct new half-BPS line defects in 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories whose Higgs branches are complete flag manifolds $X = {\rm Fl}(n)$. Upon circle compactification, the bulk theory flows to a non-linear sigma model (NLSM) with target space $X$ and the line defects flow to objects supported on Schubert varieties $X_w \subseteq X$. These Schubert line defects form an important basis of the quantum K-theory of $X$. They are realized as $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SQM) quivers coupled to the 3d gauge theory. We show that the insertion of the Schubert line defect restricts the target space of the 3d gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) to the Schubert variety $X_w$, with the 1d degrees of freedom physically realizing a Bott--Samelson resolution of $X_w$. Moreover, we verify in examples that the 1d flavored Witten index of the quiver SQM reproduces the (equivariant) Chern character of the structure sheaf $\mathcal{O}_{X_w}$ as a (double) quantum Grothendieck polynomial, generalizing previous results for $X$ a Grassmannian manifold. Our construction thus provides a more direct realization of the 3d GLSM/quantum K-theory correspondence for complete flag manifolds. Finally, in the small-circle limit, we obtain a 0d-2d coupled system that realizes the Schubert classes $[X_w]$ in the quantum cohomology ring of $X$.

Total instanton restriction via multiverse interference: Noncompact gauge theories and (-1)-form symmetries

In this note we consider examples of decomposition (in which a local QFT is equivalent to a disjoint union of multiple independent theories, known as universes) where there is a continuous familiy of universes, rather than a finite or countably infinite collection. In particular, this allows us to consistently eliminate all instantons in a local QFT via a suitable topological gauging of the (-1)-form symmetry. In two-dimensional U(1) gauge theories, this is equivalent to changing the gauge group to R. This makes both locality as well as the instanton restriction explicit. We apply this to clarify the Gross-Taylor string interpretation of the decomposition of two-dimensional pure Yang-Mills. We also apply decomposition to study two-dimensional R gauge theories, such as the pure R Maxwell theory, and two-dimensional supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models whose gauge groups have factors of R. In that context, we find that analogues of the Witten effect for dyons, here rotating between universes, play a role in relating anomalies of the individual universes to (different) anomalies in the disjoint union. Finally, we discuss limits of the Tanizaki-Unsal construction, which accomplish instanton restriction by topologically gauging a Q/Z (-1)-form symmetry, and speculate in two-dimensional theories on possible interpretations of those limits in terms of the adelic solenoid.

A Nakayama result for the quantum K theory of homogeneous spaces

We prove that the ideal of relations in the (equivariant) quantum K ring of a homogeneous space is generated by quantizations of each of the generators of the ideal in the classical (equivariant) K ring. This extends to quantum K theory a result of Siebert and Tian in quantum cohomology. We illustrate this technique in the case of the quantum K ring of partial flag manifolds, using a set of quantum K Whitney relations conjectured by the authors, and recently proved by Huq-Kuruvilla.

Notes on gauging noninvertible symmetries, part 2: higher multiplicity cases

In this paper we discuss gauging noninvertible zero-form symmetries in two dimensions, extending our previous work. Specifically, in this work we discuss more general gauged noninvertible symmetries in which the noninvertible symmetry is not multiplicity free, and discuss the case of Rep$(A_4)$ in detail. We realize Rep$(A_4)$ gaugings for the $c = 1$ CFT at the exceptional point in the moduli space and find new self-duality under gauging a certain non-group algebra object, leading to a larger noninvertible symmetry Rep$(SL(2, Z_3))$. We also discuss more general examples of decomposition in two-dimensional gauge theories with trivially-acting gauged noninvertible symmetries.

Chern-Simons theory, decomposition, and the A model

In this paper, we discuss how gauging one-form symmetries in Chern-Simons theories is implemented in an A-twisted topological open string theory. For example, the contribution from a fixed H/Z bundle on a three-manifold M, arising in a BZ gauging of H Chern-Simons, for Z a finite subgroup of the center of H, is described by an open string worldsheet theory whose bulk is a sigma model with target a Z-gerbe (a bundle of one-form symmetries) over T^* M, of characteristic class determined by the H/Z bundle. We give a worldsheet picture of the decomposition of one-form-symmetry-gauged Chern-Simons in three dimensinos, and we describe how a target-space constraint on bundles arising in the gauged Chern-Simons theory has a natural worldsheet realization. Our proposal provides examples of the expected correspondence between worldsheet global higher-form symmetries, and target-space gauged higher-form symmetries.

Decomposition squared

In this paper, we test and extend a proposal of Gu, Pei, and Zhang for an application of decomposition to three-dimensional theories with one-form symmetries and to quantum K theory. The theories themselves do not decompose, but, OPEs of parallel one-dimensional objects (such as Wilson lines) and dimensional reductions to two dimensions do decompose, sometimes in two independent ways. We apply this to extend conjectures for quantum K theory rings of gerbes (realized by three-dimensional gauge theories with one-form symmetries) via both orbifold partition functions and gauged linear sigma models.

Quantum K Whitney relations for partial flag varieties

In a recent paper, we stated conjectural presentations for the equivariant quantum K ring of partial flag varieties, motivated by physics considerations. In this companion paper, we analyze these presentations mathematically. We start by proving a Nakayama type result for quantum K theory: if the conjectured set of relations deforms a complete set of relations of the classical K theory ring, then they must form a complete set of relations for the quantum K ring. We prove the conjectured presentation in the case of the incidence varieties, and we show that if a quantum K divisor axiom holds (as conjectured by Buch and Mihalcea), then the conjectured presentation also holds for the complete flag variety. Finally, we briefly revisit the change of variables relating the mathematics and physics presentations.

Three-dimensional orbifolds by 2-groups

In this paper we generalize previous work on decomposition in three-dimensional orbifolds by 2-groups realized as analogues of central extensions, to orbifolds by more general 2-groups. We describe the computation of such orbifolds in physics, state a version of the decomposition conjecture, and then compute in numerous examples, checking that decomposition works as advertised.

Topological Strings on Non-Commutative Resolutions

In this paper we propose a definition of torsion refined Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants for Calabi-Yau threefolds with terminal nodal singularities that do not admit K\"ahler crepant resolutions. Physically, the refinement takes into account the charge of five-dimensional BPS states under a discrete gauge symmetry in M-theory. We propose a mathematical definition of the invariants in terms of the geometry of all non-K\"ahler crepant resolutions taken together. The invariants are encoded in the A-model topological string partition functions associated to non-commutative (nc) resolutions of the Calabi-Yau. Our main example will be a singular degeneration of the generic Calabi-Yau double cover of $\mathbb{P}^3$ and leads to an enumerative interpretation of the topological string partition function of a hybrid Landau-Ginzburg model. Our results generalize a recent physical proposal made in the context of torus fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds by one of the authors and clarify the associated enumerative geometry.

Decomposition, Trivially-Acting Symmetries, and Topological Operators

Trivially-acting symmetries in two-dimensional conformal field theory include twist fields of dimension zero which are local topological operators. We investigate the consequences of regarding these operators as part of the global symmetry of the theory. That is, we regard such a symmetry as a mix of topological defect lines (TDLs) and topological point operators (TPOs). TDLs related by a trivially-acting symmetry can join at a TPO to form non-trivial two-way junctions. Upon gauging, the local operators at those junctions can become vacua in a disjoint union of theories. Examining the behavior of the TPOs under gauging therefore allows us to refine decomposition by tracking the trivially-acting symmetries of each universe. Mixed anomalies between the TDLs and TPOs provide discrete torsion-like phases for the partition functions of these orbifolds, modifying the resulting decomposition. This framework also readily allows for the consideration of trivially-acting non-invertible symmetries.

Decomposition, condensation defects, and fusion

In this paper we outline the application of decomposition to condensation defects and their fusion rules. Briefly, a condensation defect is obtained by gauging a higher-form symmetry along a submanifold, and so there is a natural interplay with notions of decomposition, the statement that d-dimensional quantum field theories with global (d-1)-form symmetries are equivalent to disjoint unions of other quantum field theories. We will also construct new (sometimes non-invertible) defects, and compute their fusion products, again utilizing decomposition. An important role will be played in all these analyses by theta angles for gauged higher-form symmetries, which can be used to select individual universes in a decomposition.

Quantum K theory of Grassmannians, Wilson line operators, and Schur bundles

We prove a `Whitney' presentation, and a `Coulomb branch' presentation, for the torus equivariant quantum K theory of the Grassmann manifold $\mathrm{Gr}(k;n)$, inspired from physics, and stated in an earlier paper. The first presentation is obtained by quantum deforming the product of the Hirzebruch $\lambda_y$ classes of the tautological bundles. In physics, the $\lambda_y$ classes arise as certain Wilson line operators. The second presentation is obtained from the Coulomb branch equations involving the partial derivatives of a twisted superpotential from supersymmetric gauge theory. This is closest to a presentation obtained by Gorbounov and Korff, utilizing integrable systems techniques. Algebraically, we relate the Coulomb and Whitney presentations utilizing transition matrices from the (equivariant) Grothendieck polynomials to the (equivariant) complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials. Along the way, we calculate K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of wedge powers of the tautological bundles on $\mathrm{Gr}(k;n)$, using the `quantum=classical' statement.

An introduction to decomposition

We review work on `decomposition,' a property of two-dimensional theories with 1-form symmetries and, more generally, d-dimensional theories with (d-1)-form symmetries. Decomposition is the observation that such quantum field theories are equivalent to (`decompose into') disjoint unions of other QFTs, known in this context as "universes." Examples include two-dimensional gauge theories and orbifolds with matter invariant under a subgroup of the gauge group. Decomposition explains and relates several physical properties of these theories -- for example, restrictions on allowed instantons arise as a "multiverse interference effect" between contributions from constituent universes. First worked out in 2006 as part of efforts to resolve technical questions in string propagation on stacks, decomposition has been the driver of a number of developments since. We give a general overview of decomposition, describe features of decomposition arising in gauge theories, then dive into specifics for orbifolds. We conclude with a discussion of the recent application to anomaly resolution of Wang-Wen-Witten in two-dimensional orbifolds. This is a contribution to the proceedings of the conference Two-dimensional supersymmetric theories and related topics (Matrix Institute, Australia, January 2022), giving an overview of a talk given there and elsewhere.

Combinatoric topological string theories and group theory algorithms

A number of finite algorithms for constructing representation theoretic data from group multiplications in a finite group G have recently been shown to be related to amplitudes for combinatoric topological strings (G-CTST) based on Dijkgraaf-Witten theory of flat G-bundles on surfaces. We extend this result to projective representations of G using twisted Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. New algorithms for characters are described, based on handle creation operators and minimal multiplicative generating subspaces for the centers of group algebras and twisted group algebras. Such minimal generating subspaces are of interest in connection with information theoretic aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence. For the untwisted case, we describe the integrality properties of certain character sums and character power sums which follow from these constructive G-CTST algorithms. These integer sums appear as residues of singularities in G-CTST generating functions. S-duality of the combinatoric topological strings motivates the definition of an inverse handle creation operator in the centers of group algebras and twisted group algebras.

Anomalies, Extensions and Orbifolds

We investigate gauge anomalies in the context of orbifold conformal field theories. Such anomalies manifest as failures of modular invariance in the constituents of the orbifold partition function. We review how this irregularity is classified by cohomology and how extending the orbifold group can remove it. Working with such extensions requires an understanding of the consistent ways in which extending groups can act on the twisted states of the original symmetry, which leads us to a discrete-torsion like choice that exists in orbifolds with trivially-acting subgroups. We review a general method for constructing such extensions and investigate its application to orbifolds. Through numerous explicit examples we test the conjecture that consistent extensions should be equivalent to (in general multiple copies of) orbifolds by non-anomalous subgroups.

A generalization of decomposition in orbifolds

This paper describes a generalization of decomposition in orbifolds. In general terms, decomposition states that two-dimensional orbifolds and gauge theories whose gauge groups have trivially-acting subgroups decompose into disjoint unions of theories. However, decomposition can be, at least naively, broken in orbifolds if the orbifold has discrete torsion in the trivially-acting subgroup. (Formally, this breaks finite global one-form symmetries.) Nevertheless, even in such cases, one still sees rudiments of decomposition. In this paper, we generalize decomposition in orbifolds to include such examples of discrete torsion, which we check in numerous examples. Our analysis includes as special cases (and in one sense generalizes) quantum symmetries of abelian orbifolds.
