On Lagrangians of Non-abelian Dijkgraaf-Witten Theories

Dijkgraaf-Witten theories have a wide range of applications in topological phases of matter and the study of generalized global symmetries. We develop a method to construct BF-type Lagrangians for Dijkgraaf-Witten theories with non-abelian gauge group by gauging $H^{(0)}$ symmetries from a BF-Lagrangian of an abelian Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. When $H$ nontrivially permutes the operators of the original theory, the Lagrangian of the $H$-gauged theory is constructed with cohomologies with local coefficients. We analyze the structure of the Lagrangians and their gauge transformations with homotopy theory. We also construct the operator spectrum and verify the Lagrangians by matching elementary linking invariants.

On Gauging Finite Symmetries by Higher Gauging Condensation Defects

Based on the work by C{\'o}rdova-Costa-Hsin (arXiv:2412.16681), we propose an EFT-style, Lagrangian procedure to gauge finite 0-form symmetries in untwisted Dijkgraaf-Witten gauge theories on closed oriented manifolds using higher gauging condensation defects and point out its limitations. Using this proposal, we construct effective actions of untwisted Dijkgraaf-Witten theories with Heisenberg gauge group over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ and show that the braiding data from Hopf link and the fusion rules match with the expected discrete gauge theories. We also study the symTFT implications of these effective Lagrangians and clarify their relations with higher group global symmetries.

Revisiting Scattering Enhancement from the Aharonov-Bohm Effect

We revisit the problem of a charged particle scattering off of an Aharonov-Bohm cosmic string. A classic computation gave an infinite total scattering cross section, leading to a Callan-Rubakov-like enhancement which can have important implications on baryon number asymmetry in the early universe. However, unlike the Callan-Rubakov effect, the Aharonov-Bohm interaction is topological and thus it is surprising that it leads to such a dramatic dynamical effect for single particle scattering. We reexamine this old problem through the modern lens of generalized global symmetries by embedding Aharanov-Bohm strings in a discrete gauge theory. We show that the scattering cross section is suppressed by the core size and there is thus no Callan-Rubakov-like enhancement.
