Kadison-Kastler stable factors

A conjecture of Kadison and Kastler from 1972 asks whether sufficiently close operator algebras in a natural uniform sense must be small unitary perturbations of one another. For $n\geq 3$ and a free ergodic probability measure preserving action of $SL_n(\mathbb Z)$ on a standard nonatomic probability space $(X,μ)$, write $M=((L^\infty(X,μ)\rtimes SL_n(\mathbb Z))\,\overline{\otimes}\, R$, where $R$ is the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor. We show that whenever $M$ is represented as a von Neumann algebra on some Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ and $N\subseteq\mathcal B(\mathcal H)$ is sufficiently close to $M$, then there is a unitary $u$ on $\mathcal H$ close to the identity operator with $uMu^*=N$. This provides the first nonamenable class of von Neumann algebras satisfying Kadison and Kastler's conjecture. We also obtain stability results for crossed products $L^\infty(X,μ)\rtimesΓ$ whenever the comparison map from the bounded to usual group cohomology vanishes in degree 2 for the module $L^2(X,μ)$. In this case, any von Neumann algebra sufficiently close to such a crossed product is necessarily isomorphic to it. In particular, this result applies when $Γ$ is a free group.

On a von Neumann algebra which is a complemented subspace

Let M be a von Neumann algebra of type II_1 which is also a complemented subspace of B(H). We establish an algebraic criterion, which ensures that M is an injective von Neumann algebra. As a corollary we show that if M is a complemented factor of type II_1 on a Hilbert space H, then M is injective if its fundamental group is non-trivial.

Type II_1 factors satisfying the spatial isomorphism conjecture

This paper addresses a conjecture of Kadison and Kastler that a von Neumann algebra M on a Hilbert space H should be unitarily equivalent to each sufficiently close von Neumann algebra N and, moreover, the implementing unitary can be chosen to be close to the identity operator. This is known to be true for amenable von Neumann algebras and in this paper we describe new classes of non-amenable factors for which the conjecture is valid. These are based on tensor products of the hyperfinite II_1 factor with crossed products of abelian algebras by suitably chosen discrete groups.

Spectral triples and the geometry of fractals

For each K-homolgy element of the Sierpinski gasket we construct a spectral triple which will generate that element. We show that there must be certain limits on the choice of the K-homology element if the geometric properties of the gasket shall be recoverable from that spectral triple. For a big subgroup of the K-homology group we show that our spectral triples will recover the metric, the dimension and the Hausdorff measure on the gaket.

C*-algebras nearly contained in type I algebras

In this paper we consider near inclusions $A\subseteq_γB$ of C$^*$-algebras. We show that if $B$ is a separable type I C*-algebra and $A$ satisfies Kadison's similarity problem, then $A$ is also type I and use this to obtain an embedding of $A$ into $B$.

Perturbations of nuclear C*-algebras

Kadison and Kastler introduced a natural metric on the collection of all C*-subalgebras of the bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space. They conjectured that sufficiently close algebras are unitarily conjugate. We establish this conjecture when one algebra is separable and nuclear. We also consider one-sided versions of these notions, and we obtain embeddings from certain near inclusions involving separable nuclear C*-algebras. At the end of the paper we demonstrate how our methods lead to improved characterisations of some of the types of algebras that are of current interest in the classification programme.

Perturbations of C*-algebraic invariants

Kadison and Kastler introduced a metric on the set of all C$^*$-algebras on a fixed Hilbert space. In this paper structural properties of C$^*$-algebras which are close in this metric are examined. Our main result is that the property of having a positive answer to Kadison's similarity problem transfers to close C$^*$-algebras. In establishing this result we answer questions about closeness of commutants and tensor products when one algebra satisfies the similarity property. We also examine $K$-theory and traces of close C$^*$-algebras, showing that sufficiently close algebras have isomorphic Elliott invariants when one algebra has the similarity property.

Extensions and degenerations of spectral triples

For a unital C*-algebra A, which is equipped with a spectral triple and an extension T of A by the compacts, we construct a family of spectral triples associated to T and depending on the two positive parameters (s,t). Using Rieffel's notation of quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance between compact quantum metric spaces it is possible to define a metric on this family of spectral triples, and we show that the distance between a pair of spectral triples varies continuously with respect to the parameters. It turns out that a spectral triple associated to the unitarization of the algebra of compact operators is obtained under the limit - in this metric - for (s,1) -> (0, 1), while the basic spectral triple, associated to A, is obtained from this family under a sort of a dual limiting process for (1, t) -> (1, 0). We show that our constructions will provide families of spectral triples for the unitarized compacts and for the Podles sphere. In the case of the compacts we investigate to which extent our proposed spectral triple satisfies Connes' 7 axioms for noncommutative geometry.

Dirac operators and spectral triples for some fractal sets built on curves

We construct spectral triples and, in particular, Dirac operators, for the algebra of continuous functions on certain compact metric spaces. The triples are countable sums of triples where each summand is based on a curve in the space. Several fractals, like a finitely summable infinite tree and the Sierpinski gasket, fit naturally within our framework. In these cases, we show that our spectral triples do describe the geodesic distance and the Minkowski dimension as well as, more generally, the complex fractal dimensions of the space. Furthermore, in the case of the Sierpinski gasket, the associated Dixmier-type trace coincides with the normalized Hausdorff measure of dimension $\log 3/ \log 2$.

Sums of two dimensional spectral triples

We study countable sums of two dimensional modules for the continuous complex functions on a compact metric space and show that it is possible to construct a spectral triple which gives the original metric back. This spectral triple will be finitely summable for any positive parameter. We also construct a sum of two dimensional modules which reflects some aspects of the topological dimensions of the compact metric space, but this will only give the metric back approximately. We make an explicit computation of the last module for the unit interval. The metric is recovered exactly, the Dixmier trace induces a multiple of the Lebesgue integral and the number N(K) of eigenvalues bounded by K behaves, such that N(K)/K is bounded, but without limit for K growing.

Spectral triples for AF C*-algebras and metrics on the Cantor set

An AF C*-algebra has a natural filtration as an increasing sequence of finite dimensional C*-algebras. We show that it is possible to construct a Dirac operator which relates to this filtration in a natural way and which will induce a metric for the weak*-topology on the state space of the algebra. In the particular case of a UHF C*-algebra, the construction can be made in a way, which relates directly to the dimensions of the increasing sequence of subalgebras. The algebra of continuous functions on the Cantor set is an approximately finite dimensional C*-algebra and our investigations show, when applied to this algebra, that the proposed Dirac operators have good classical interpretations and lead to an, apparently, new way of constructing a representative for a Cantor set of any given Hausdorff dimension. At the end of the paper we study the finite dimensional full matrix algebras over the complex numbers, and show that the operation of transposition on matrices yields a spectral triple which has the property that it's metric on the state space is exactly the norm distance. This result is then generalized to arbitrary unital C*-algebras.

Hochschild Cohomology of Factors with Property $Γ$

The main result of this paper is that the k^{\rm th} continuous Hochschild cohomology groups H^k(\cl M,\cl M) and H^k(\cl M,B(H)) of a von Neumann factor ${\cl M}\subseteq B(H) of type {\rm II}_1 with property Gamma are zero for all positive integers k. The method of proof involves the construction of hyperfinite subfactors with special properties and a new inequality of Grothendieck type for multilinear maps. We prove joint continuity in the $\|\cdot\|_2$-norm of separately ultraweakly continuous multilinear maps, and combine these results to reduce to the case of completely bounded cohomology which is already solved.

Group C*-algebras, metrics and an operator theoretic inequality

On a discrete group G a length function may implement a spectral triple on the reduced group C*-algebra. Following A. Connes, the Dirac operator of the triple then can induce a metric on the state space of reduced group C*-algebra. Recent studies by M. Rieffel raise several questions with respect to such a metric on the state space. Here it is proven that for a free non Abelian group, the metric on the state space is bounded. Further we propose a relaxation in the way a length function is used in the construction of a metric, and we show that for groups of rapid decay there are many metrics related to a length function which all have all the expected properties. The boundedness result for free groups is based on an estimate of the completely bounded norm of a certain Schur multiplier and on some techniques concerning free groups due to U. Haagerup. At the end we have included a noncommutative version of the Arzela-Ascoli Theorem.

Finite von Neumann algebra factors with property Gamma

Techniques introduced by G. Pisier in his proof that finite von Neumann factors with property gamma have length at most 5 are modified to prove that the length is 3. It is proved that if such a factor is a complemented subspace of some larger C*-algebra then there exists a projection of norm one from the larger onto the smaller algebra. A new proof of the fact that the second continuous Hochschild cohomology group of such an algebra with coefficients in the algebra vanishes, is also included.

On invertibility preserving linear maps, simultaneous triangularization and Property L

Let F be a linear unital map of a unital matrix algebra A over the complex numbers into the complex n by n matrices. Then F induces a linear unital map Fk of the k by k matrices over A into the complex nk by nk matrices by the action of F on each entry in the k by k matrices. If Fk preserves invertibility and k is greater than dim(alg(F(A)))-dim(F(A))+2 then F is a homomorphism modulo the Jacobson radical in alg(F(A)). The paper also contains some results related to the property L and some sufficient conditions for simultaneous triangularization of sets of matrices.

A cohomological characterization of approximately finite dimensional von Neumann algebras

For a von Neumann algebra M on a Hilbert space, A. Connes has constructed a module S and a derivation of M into S, such that M is approximately finite dimensional if and only if that derivation is inner. The paper contains a generalization of this result to the situation with a 2-cocycle instead. The cocycle is the obvious generalization, and the module is closely related to Connes, but isn't a dual module.
