Topological transconductance quantization in a four-terminal Josephson junction

Recently we predicted that the Andreev bound state spectrum of 4-terminal Josephson junctions may possess topologically protected zero-energy Weyl singularities, which manifest themselves in a quantized transconductance in units of $4e^2/h$ when two of the terminals are voltage biased [R.-P. Riwar et al., Nature Commun. 7, 11167 (2016)]. Here, using the Landauer-Büttiker scattering theory, we compute numerically the currents flowing through such a structure in order to assess the conditions for observing this effect. We show that the voltage below which the transconductance becomes quantized is determined by the interplay of non-adiabatic transitions between Andreev bound states and inelastic relaxation processes. We demonstrate that the topological quantization of the transconductance can be observed at voltages of the order of $10^{-2} Δ/e$, $Δ$ being the superconducting gap in the leads.

Tunneling spectroscopy of Majorana-Kondo devices

We study the local density of states (LDOS) in systems of Luttinger-liquid nanowires connected to a common mesoscopic superconducting island, in which Majorana bound states give rise to different types of topological Kondo effects. We show that electron interactions enhance the low-energy LDOS in the leads close to the island, with unusual exponents due to Kondo physics that can be probed in tunneling experiments.

Non-Fermi liquid manifold in a Majorana device

We propose and study a setup realizing a stable manifold of non-Fermi liquid states. The device consists of a mesoscopic superconducting island hosting $N \ge 3$ Majorana bound states tunnel-coupled to normal leads, with a Josephson contact to a bulk superconductor. We find a nontrivial interplay between multi-channel Kondo and resonant Andreev reflection processes, which results in the fixed point manifold. The scaling dimension of the leading irrelevant perturbation changes continuously within the manifold and determines the power-law scaling of the temperature dependent conductance.

Spin-orbit interactions in a helical Luttinger liquid with a Kondo impurity

The combined effect of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions on the physics of a helical Luttinger liquid coupled to a Kondo impurity is studied. A Rashba coupling can potentially destroy the Kondo singlet formation in certain parameter regimes [Phys. Rev. B 86, 161103(R) (2012)]. This effect is here shown to vanish for sufficiently strong Dresselhaus interaction. The transport properties of the system are investigated by calculating electrical conductance, current and current fluctuations, and thermal conductance.

Finite-size effects from higher conservation laws for the one-dimensional Bose gas

We consider a generalized Lieb-Liniger model, describing a one-dimensional Bose gas with all its conservation laws appearing in the density matrix. This will be the case for the generalized Gibbs ensemble, or when the conserved charges are added to the Hamiltonian. The finite-size corrections are calculated for the energy spectrum. Large-distance asymptotics of correlation functions are then determined using methods from conformal field theory.

Electrical control of the Kondo effect in a helical edge liquid

Magnetic impurities affect the transport properties of the helical edge states of quantum spin Hall insulators by causing single-electron backscattering. We study such a system in the presence of a Rashba spin-orbit interaction induced by an external electric field, showing that this can be used to control the Kondo temperature, as well as the correction to the conductance due to the impurity. Surprisingly, for a strongly anisotropic electron-impurity spin exchange, Kondo screening may get obstructed by the presence of a non-collinear spin interaction mediated by the Rashba coupling. This challenges the expectation that the Kondo effect is stable against time-reversal invariant perturbations.

Two-Impurity Kondo Model: Spin-Orbit Interactions and Entanglement

Motivated by proposals to employ RKKY-coupled spins as building blocks in a solid-state quantum computer, we analyze how the RKKY interaction in a 2D electron gas is influenced by spin-orbit interactions. Using a two-impurity Kondo model with added Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit interactions we find that spin-rotational invariance of the RKKY interaction - essential for having a well-controllable two-qubit gate - is restored when tuning the Rashba coupling to have the same strength as the Dresselhaus coupling. We also discuss the critical properties of the two-impurity Kondo model in the presence of spin-orbit interactions, and extract the leading correction to the block entanglement scaling due to these interactions.

Impurity entanglement entropy in Kondo systems from conformal field theory

The entanglement entropy in Kondo impurity systems is studied analytically using conformal field theory. From the impurity contribution to the scaling corrections of the entanglement entropy we extract information about the screening cloud profile for general non-Fermi-liquid fixed points. By also considering the finite-temperature corrections to scaling of the von Neumann entropy we point out a direct connection between the large-distance screening cloud profile and thermodynamic observables such as the specific heat.

Corrections to scaling in entanglement entropy from boundary perturbations

We investigate the corrections to scaling of the Renyi entropies of a region of size l at the end of a semi-infinite one-dimensional system described by a conformal field theory when the corrections come from irrelevant boundary operators. The corrections from irrelevant bulk operators with scaling dimension x have been studied by Cardy and Calabrese (2010), and they found not only the expected corrections of the form l^(4-2x) but also unusual corrections that could not have been anticipated by finite-size scaling arguments alone. However, for the case of perturbations from irrelevant boundary operators we find that the only corrections that can occur to leading order are of the form l^(2-2x_b) for boundary operators with scaling dimension x_b < 3/2, and l^(-1) when x_b > 3/2. When x_b=3/2 they are of the form l^(-1)log(l). A marginally irrelevant boundary perturbation will give leading corrections going as log(l)^(-3). No unusual corrections occur when perturbing with a boundary operator.

Multicriticality and entanglement in the one-dimensional quantum compass model

We study the one-dimensional (1D) quantum compass model with two independent parameters by means of an exact mapping to the quantum Ising model. This allows us to uncover hidden features of the quantum phase transition in the ordinary one-parameter quantum compass model, showing that it occurs at a multicritical point where a line of first-order transitions intersects a line of second-order symmetry-breaking transitions of Ising type. We calculate the concurrence and the block entanglement entropy in the four ground state phases, and find that these entanglement measures accurately signal the second-order, but not the first-order, transitions.

Reduced fidelity in topological quantum phase transitions

We study the reduced fidelity between local states of lattice systems exhibiting topological order. By exploiting mappings to spin models with classical order, we are able to analytically extract the scaling behavior of the reduced fidelity at the corresponding quantum phase transitions out of the topologically ordered phases. Our results suggest that the reduced fidelity, albeit being a local measure, generically serves as a faithful marker of a topological quantum phase transition.
