Non-geometric Fluxes, Asymmetric Strings and Nonassociative Geometry

We study closed bosonic strings propagating both in a flat background with constant H-flux and in its T-dual configurations. We define a conformal field theory capturing linear effects in the flux and compute scattering amplitudes of tachyons, where the Rogers dilogarithm plays a prominent role. For the scattering of four tachyons, a fluxed version of the Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude is derived and its pole structure is analyzed. In the case of an R-flux background obtained after three T-dualities, we find indications for a nonassociative target-space structure which can be described in terms of a deformed tri-product. Remarkably, this product is compatible with crossing symmetry of conformal correlation functions. We finally argue that the R-flux background flows to an asymmetric CFT.

Nonassociative Gravity in String Theory?

In an on-shell conformal field theory approach, we find indications of a three-bracket structure for target space coordinates in general closed string backgrounds. This generalizes the appearance of noncommutative gauge theories for open strings in two-form backgrounds to a putative noncommutative/nonassociative gravity theory for closed strings probing curved backgrounds with non-vanishing three-form flux. Several aspects and consequences of the three-bracket structure are discussed and a new type of generalized uncertainty principle is proposed.

The Generalized Green-Schwarz Mechanism for Type IIB Orientifolds with D3- and D7-Branes

In this paper, we work out in detail the tadpole cancellation conditions as well as the generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism for type IIB orientifold compactifications with D3- and D7-branes. We find that not only the well-known D3- and D7-tadpole conditions have to be satisfied, but in general also the vanishing of the induced D5-brane charges leads to a non-trivial constraint. In fact, for the case $h^{1,1}_{-} \neq 0$ the latter condition is important for the cancellation of chiral anomalies. We also extend our analysis by including D9- as well as D5-branes and determine the rules for computing the chiral spectrum of the combined system.

String GUT Scenarios with Stabilised Moduli

Taking into account the recently proposed poly-instanton corrections to the superpotential and combining the race-track with a KKLT respectively LARGE Volume Scenario in an intricate manner, we show that we gain exponential control over the parameters in an effective superpotential. This allows us to dynamically stabilise moduli such that a conventional MSSM scenario with the string scale lowered to the GUT scale is realised. Depending on the cycles wrapped by the MSSM branes, two different scenarios for the hierarchy of soft masses arise. The first one is a supergravity mediated model with M_3/2=1TeV while the second one features mixed anomaly-supergravity mediation with M_3/2=10^10GeV and split supersymmetry. We also comment on dynamically lowering the scales such that the tree-level cosmological constant is of the order Λ=(10^-3eV)^4.

Moduli Stabilisation versus Chirality for MSSM like Type IIB Orientifolds

We investigate the general question of implementing a chiral MSSM like D-brane sector in Type IIB orientifold models with complete moduli stabilisation via F-terms induced by fluxes and space-time instantons, respectively gaugino condensates. The prototype examples are the KKLT and the so-called large volume compactifications. We show that the ansatz of first stabilising all moduli via F-terms and then introducing the Standard Model module is misleading, as a chiral sector notoriously influences the structure of non-perturbative effects and induces a D-term potential. Focusing for concreteness on the large volume scenario, we work out the geometry of the swiss-cheese type Calabi-Yau manifold P_[1,3,3,3,5][15]_(3,75) and analyse whether controllable and phenomenologically acceptable Kaehler moduli stabilisation can occur by the combination of F- and D-terms.

Non-perturbative SQCD Superpotentials from String Instantons

The Affleck-Dine-Seiberg instanton generated superpotential for SQCD with Nf=Nc-1 flavours is explicitly derived from a local model of engineered intersecting D6-branes with a single E2-instanton. This computation extends also to symplectic gauge groups with Nf=Nc flavours.

Intersecting D-Branes on Shift Z2 x Z2 Orientifolds

We investigate Z2 x Z2 orientifolds with group actions involving shifts. A complete classification of possible geometries is presented where also previous work by other authors is included in a unified framework from an intersecting D-brane perspective. In particular, we show that the additional shifts not only determine the topology of the orbifold but also independently the presence of orientifold planes. In the second part, we work out in detail a basis of homological three cycles on shift Z2 x Z2 orientifolds and construct all possible fractional D-branes including rigid ones. A Pati-Salam type model with no open-string moduli in the visible sector is presented.
