Global bifurcation of doubly periodic gravity-capillary waves on Beltrami flows

We prove the existence of a global family of steady, doubly periodic gravity-capillary waves on Beltrami flows. This is the first rigorous existence result for genuinely three-dimensional inviscid surface waves, with or without vorticity, beyond the perturbative regime close to simple explicit solutions. The proof is based on reformulating the steady water wave problem as a bifurcation problem of the form `identity plus compact' and applying a global bifurcation argument in Hölder spaces. The main challenge is that the kernel of the linearisation at the bifurcation point is two-dimensional, and that both kernel elements are necessary to obtain genuinely three-dimensional solutions. Since this prevents the use of classical global bifurcation theory, we introduce a novel reformulation of the bifurcation problem using the parameterisation of a local family of solutions bifurcating from laminar flow. In this new parameter space, we apply a variation of analytic global bifurcation theory. Along the branch, we then prove a sharper blow-up alternative, namely blow-up of the surface gradient in $C^{0,γ}$.

On the spectral stability of periodic capillary-gravity waves

In this paper, we investigate the spectral stability of periodic traveling waves in the two dimensional gravity-capillary water wave problem. We derive a stability criterion based on an index function, whose sign determines the spectral stability of the waves. This result aligns with earlier formal analyses by Djordjević \& Redekopp [15] and Ablowitz \& Segur [1], which employed the nonlinear Schrödinger approximation in the modulational regime. In particular, we show that instability is excluded near spectral crossings away from the origin when the surface tension is positive and the inverse square of the Froude number $α\in(0,1),$ which results from the fact that the corresponding Krein signatures are identical. It is also shown that there exists $α_1 = (23 - 3\sqrt{41})/8$ and a curve $β: (α_1, 1]\rightarrow \mathbb{R}_{+},$ such that for any $α\in (α_1, 1]$, small amplitude periodic waves are spectrally stable when $β> β(α)$. These findings highlight the stabilizing effect of surface tension on periodic capillary-gravity waves.

Fully localised three-dimensional solitary water waves on Beltrami flows with strong surface tension

Fully localised three-dimensional solitary waves are steady water waves which are evanescent in every horizontal direction. This paper presents an existence theory for such waves under the assumptions that the relative vorticity and velocity fields are parallel (`Beltrami flows'), that the free surface of the water takes the form $\{z=η(x,y)\}$ for some function $η: {\mathbb R}^2\rightarrow{\mathbb R}$, and that the influence of surface tension is sufficiently strong. The governing equations are formulated as a single equation for $η$, which is then reduced to a perturbation of the KP-I equation. This equation has recently been shown to have a family of nondegenerate localised solutions, and an application of a suitable variant of the implicit-function theorem shows that they persist under perturbations.

Rigidity of symmetric doubly-periodic water waves near shear flows

We prove that symmetric, doubly periodic, capillary-gravity water waves in finite depth bifurcating from non-uniform non-stagnant shear flows are necessarily two-dimensional to leading order. This is in stark contrast to the case of uniform background flows, where the existence of truly three-dimensional bifurcating waves is well known. While this paper focuses on capillary-gravity water waves, our proof also applies to other suitable types of dynamic boundary conditions, such as hydroelastic waves.

Axisymmetric capillary water waves with vorticity and swirl connecting to static unduloid configurations

We study steady axisymmetric water waves with general vorticity and swirl, subject to the influence of surface tension. Explicit solutions to such a water wave problem are static configurations where the surface is an unduloid, that is, a periodic surface of revolution with constant mean curvature. We prove that to any such configuration there connects a global continuum of non-static solutions by means of a global implicit function theorem. To prove this, the key is strict monotonicity of a certain function describing the mean curvature of an unduloid and involving complete elliptic integrals. From this point of view, this paper is an interesting interplay between water waves, geometry, and properties of elliptic integrals.

Large-amplitude steady gravity water waves with general vorticity and critical layers

We consider two-dimensional steady periodic gravity waves on water of finite depth with a prescribed but arbitrary vorticity distribution. The water surface is allowed to be overhanging and no assumptions regarding the absence of stagnation points and critical layers are made. Using conformal mappings and a new reformulation of Bernoulli's equation, we uncover an equivalent formulation as "identity plus compact," which is amenable to Rabinowitz's global bifurcation theorem. This allows us to construct a global connected set of solutions, bifurcating from laminar flows with a flat surface. Moreover, a nodal analysis is carried out for these solutions under a certain spectral assumption involving the vorticity function. Lastly, downstream waves are investigated in more detail.

Symmetric doubly periodic gravity-capillary waves with small vorticity

We construct small amplitude gravity-capillary water waves with small nonzero vorticity, in three spatial dimensions, bifurcating from uniform flows. The waves are symmetric, and periodic in both horizontal coordinates. The proof is inspired by Lortz' construction of magnetohydrostatic equilibria in reflection-symmetric toroidal domains. It relies on a global representation of the vorticity as the cross product of two gradients, and on prescribing a functional relationship between the Bernoulli function and the orbital period of the water particles. The presence of the free surface introduces significant new challenges. In particular, the resulting free boundary problem is not elliptic, and the involved maps incur a loss of regularity under Fréchet differentiation. Nevertheless, we show that a version of the Crandall-Rabinowitz local bifurcation method applies, by carefully tracking the loss of regularity.

Analytical Study of a generalised Dirichlet-Neumann operator and application to three-dimensional water waves on Beltrami flows

In this paper we consider three-dimensional steady water waves with vorticity, under the action of gravity and surface tension; in particular we consider so-called Beltrami flows, for which the velocity field and the vorticity are collinear. We discuss a recent variational formulation of the problem which involves a generalisation of the classical Dirichlet-Neumann operator. We study this operator in detail, extending some well-known results for the classical Dirichlet-Neumann operator, such as the Taylor expansion in homogeneous powers of the wave profile, the computation of its differential and the asymptotic expansion of its associated symbol. A new formulation of the problem as a single equation for the wave profile is also presented and discussed in a similar vein. As an application of these results we rigorously prove existence of doubly periodic gravity-capillary steady waves and construct approximate doubly periodic gravity steady waves.

On the amplitude of steady water waves with positive constant vorticity

For two-dimensional steady pure-gravity water waves with a unidirectional flow of constant favourable vorticity, we prove an explicit bound on the amplitude of the wave, which decays to zero as the vorticity tends to infinity. Notably, our result holds true for arbitrary water waves, that is, we do not have to restrict ourselves to periodic or solitary or symmetric waves.

Transverse dynamics of two-dimensional traveling periodic gravity-capillary water waves

We study the transverse dynamics of two-dimensional traveling periodic waves for the gravity--capillary water-wave problem. The governing equations are the Euler equations for the irrotational flow of an inviscid fluid layer with free surface under the forces of gravity and surface tension. We focus on two open sets of dimensionless parameters $(α,β)$, where $α$ and $β$ are the inverse square of the Froude number and the Weber number, respectively. For each arbitrary but fixed pair $(α,β)$ in one of these sets, two-dimensional traveling periodic waves bifurcate from the trivial constant flow. In one open set we find a one-parameter family of periodic waves, whereas in the other open set we find two geometrically distinct one-parameter families of periodic waves. Starting from a transverse spatial dynamics formulation of the governing equations, we investigate the transverse linear instability of these periodic waves and the induced dimension-breaking bifurcation. The two results share a common analysis of the purely imaginary spectrum of the linearization at a periodic wave. We apply a simple general criterion for the transverse linear instability problem and a Lyapunov center theorem for the dimension-breaking bifurcation. For parameters $(α,β)$ in the open set where there is only one family of periodic waves, we prove that these waves are linearly transversely unstable. For the other open set, we show that the waves with larger wavenumber are transversely linearly unstable. We also identify an open subset of parameters for which both families of periodic waves are tranversely linearly unstable. For each of these transversely linearly unstable periodic waves, a dimension-breaking bifurcation occurs in which three-dimensional doubly periodic waves bifurcate from the two-dimensional periodic wave.

Bifurcation analysis for axisymmetric capillary water waves with vorticity and swirl

We study steady axisymmetric water waves with general vorticity and swirl, subject to the influence of surface tension. This can be formulated as an elliptic free boundary problem in terms of Stokes' stream function. A change of variables allows us to overcome the generic coordinate-induced singularities and to cast the problem in the form "identity plus compact", which is amenable to Rabinowitz' global bifurcation theorem, while no restrictions regarding the absence of stagnation points in the flow have to be made. Within the scope of this new formulation, local and global solution curves, bifurcating from laminar flows with a flat surface, are constructed.

Global bifurcation of capillary-gravity water waves with overhanging profiles and arbitrary vorticity

We study two-dimensional periodic capillary-gravity water waves propagating at the free surface of water in a flow with arbitrary, prescribed vorticity over a flat bed. Using conformal mappings and a new Babenko-type reformulation of Bernoulli's equation, the problem is equivalently cast into the form "identity plus compact", which is amenable to Rabinowitz' global bifurcation theorem, while no restrictions on the geometry of the surface profile and no assumptions regarding the absence of stagnation points in the flow have to be made. Within the scope of this new formulation, local and global solution curves, bifurcating from laminar flows with a flat surface, are constructed.

Fully localised three-dimensional gravity-capillary solitary waves on water of infinite depth

Fully localised solitary waves are travelling-wave solutions of the three-dimensional gravity-capillary water wave problem which decay to zero in every horizontal spatial direction. Their existence for water of finite depth has recently been established, and in this article we present an existence theory for water of infinite depth. The governing equations are reduced to a perturbation of the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which admits a family of localised solutions. Two of these solutions are symmetric in both horizontal directions and an application of a suitable version of the implicit-function theorem shows that they persist under perturbations.

Global bifurcation of solitary waves for the Whitham equation

The Whitham equation is a nonlocal shallow water-wave model which combines the quadratic nonlinearity of the KdV equation with the linear dispersion of the full water wave problem. Whitham conjectured the existence of a highest, cusped, traveling-wave solution, and his conjecture was recently verified in the periodic case by Ehrnström and Wahlén. In the present paper we prove it for solitary waves. Like in the periodic case, the proof is based on global bifurcation theory but with several new challenges. In particular, the small-amplitude limit is singular and cannot be handled using regular bifurcation theory. Instead we use an approach based on a nonlocal version of the center manifold theorem. In the large-amplitude theory a new challenge is a possible loss of compactness, which we rule out using qualitative properties of the equation. The highest wave is found as a limit point of the global bifurcation curve.

An existence theory for small-amplitude doubly periodic water waves with vorticity

We prove the existence of three-dimensional steady gravity-capillary waves with vorticity on water of finite depth. The waves are periodic with respect to a given two-dimensional lattice and the relative velocity field is a Beltrami field, meaning that the vorticity is collinear to the velocity. The existence theory is based on multi-parameter bifurcation theory.

Generalized modulation theory for strongly nonlinear gravity waves in a compressible atmosphere

This study investigates nonlinear gravity waves in the compressible atmosphere from the Earth's surface to the deep atmosphere. These waves are effectively described by Grimshaw's dissipative modulation equations which provide the basis for finding stationary solutions such as mountain lee waves and testing their stability in an analytic fashion. Assuming energetically consistent boundary and far-field conditions, that is no energy flux through the surface, free-slip boundary, and finite total energy, general wave solutions are derived and illustrated in terms of realistic background fields. These assumptions also imply that the wave-Reynolds number must become less than unity above a certain height. The modulational stability of admissible, both non-hydrostatic and hydrostatic, waves is examined. It turns out that, when accounting for the self-induced mean flow, the wave-Froude number has a resonance condition. If it becomes $1/\sqrt{2}$, then the wave destabilizes due to perturbations from the essential spectrum of the linearized modulation equations. However, if the horizontal wavelength is large enough, waves overturn before they can reach the modulational stability condition.

On the stability of solitary water waves with a point vortex

This paper investigates the stability of traveling wave solutions to the free boundary Euler equations with a submerged point vortex. We prove that sufficiently small-amplitude waves with small enough vortex strength are conditionally orbitally stable. In the process of obtaining this result, we develop a quite general stability/instability theory for bound state solutions of a large class of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems in the presence of symmetry. This is in the spirit of the seminal work of Grillakis, Shatah, and Strauss, but with hypotheses that are relaxed in a number of ways necessary for the point vortex system, and for other hydrodynamical applications more broadly. In particular, we are able to allow the Poisson map to have merely dense range, as opposed to being surjective, and to be state-dependent. As a second application of the general theory, we consider a family of nonlinear dispersive PDEs that includes the generalized KdV and Benjamin--Ono equations. The stability/instability of solitary waves for these systems has been studied extensively, notably by Bona, Souganidis, and Strauss, who used a modification of the GSS method. We provide a new, more direct proof of these results that follows as a straightforward consequence of our abstract theory. At the same time, we extend them to fractional order dispersive equations.
