Frequency- and Power-Dependent Optical Response of a Cesium Rydberg Microwave Receiver

We show experimentally obtained frequency- and power-dependent optical response of a room-temperature cesium vapor cell used as a Rydberg microwave receiver based on electromagnetically induced transparency. An applied microwave field couples the ${70S_{1/2}}$ Rydberg state to the nearby ${70P_{1/2}}$, ${70P_{3/2}}$, ${69P_{1/2}}$, and ${69P_{3/2}}$ states, modifying the probe-transmission spectrum. Probe transmission is recorded over a 800 MHz range of coupling laser detunings. These EIT spectra are measured for RF frequencies from 9 to 13.5 GHz and over a 40 dB range of RF power. We analyze the RF induced splittings in the recorded EIT spectra. We observe both limiting cases, where the EIT peak separation is either dominated by the RF detuning or by the RF power. At higher powers we are also able to observe complex features due to coupling of multiple nearby Rydberg states. We further analyze the probe-transmission signal at zero coupling-laser detuning. Sigmoidal fits to the power-response curves are used to determine the midpoint power and the 10-90% transition interval as functions of RF frequency.

Incommensurable matter-wave jets in quasi-1D geometry

Matter-wave jets are ejected from a Bose-Einstein condensate subjected to a modulation of the interaction strength. For sufficiently strong modulation additional higher harmonic matter-wave jets emerge. Here we report the first experimental observation of incommensurable "golden" $\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$ matter-wave jets in a Bose-Einstein condensate exposed to a single frequency interaction modulation. We study the formation of higher-order jets and the corresponding incommensurable density waves in quasi-one-dimensional geometry with numerical one dimensional (1D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation simulation. We explore the process of jet formation experimentally and theoretically for a wide range of modulation amplitudes and frequencies and establish a phase diagram delineating different regimes of jet formation.

Suppression of dark-state polariton collapses in cold-atom quantum memory

We observe dark-state polariton collapses and revivals in a quantum memory based on electromagnetically induced transparency on a cloud of cold cesium atoms in a magnetic field. Using $σ^+$ polarized signal and control beams in the direction of the magnetic field, we suppress the dark-state polariton collapses by polarizing the atoms towards one of the stretched Zeeman states and optimizing the frequency detuning of the control beam. In this way, we demonstrate a quantum memory with only partial dark-state polariton collapses, making the memory usable at any storage time, not only at discretized times of revivals. We obtain storage time of more than 400 $\rmμ$s, which is ten times longer than what we can achieve by trying to annul the magnetic field.

Preparation of ultra-cold atomic-ensemble arrays using time-multiplexed optical tweezers

We use optical tweezers based on time-multiplexed acousto-optic deflectors to trap ultra-cold cesium atoms in one-dimensional arrays of atomic ensembles. For temperatures between 2.5 $μ$K and 50 nK we study the maximal time between optical tweezer pulses that retains the number of atoms in a single trap. This time provides an estimate on the maximal number of sites in an array of time-multiplexed optical tweezers. We demonstrate evaporative cooling of atoms in arrays of up to 25 optical tweezer traps and the preparation of atoms in a box potential. Additionally, we demonstrate three different protocols for the preparation of atomic-ensemble arrays by transfer from an expanding ultra-cold atomic cloud. These result in the preparation of arrays of up to 74 atomic ensembles consisting of $\sim$100 atoms on average.

Spatially intertwined superconductivity and charge order in 1T-TaSSe revealed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

The interplay of different emergent phenomena -- superconductivity (SC) and domain formation -- appearing on different spatial and energy scales are investigated using high-resolution scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) in the prototypical transition metal dichalcogenide superconductor $1T$-TaSSe single crystals ($T_{SC} = 3.2$ K) at temperatures from 1 to 20 K. Our major observation is that while the SC gap size smoothly varies on the scale of $\lesssim 10$ nm, its spatial distribution is not correlated to the domain structure. On the other hand, there is statistically significant correlation of the SC gap $Δ_{SC}$ with spectral weight of the narrow band at the Fermi level formed from the same Ta $5d$ orbitals as the Mott-Hubbard band. We show that the narrow band follows the evolution of Hubbard bands in space, proving unambiguously its relation to the charge order. The correlations between the two suggest a non-trivial link between rapidly spatially varying charge order and superconductivity common in many quantum materials, and high-temperature superconductors in particular.

Single-shot Stern-Gerlach magnetic gradiometer with an expanding cloud of cold cesium atoms

We combine the Ramsey interferometry protocol, the Stern-Gerlach detection scheme, and the use of elongated geometry of a cloud of fully polarized cold cesium atoms to measure the selected component of the magnetic field gradient along the atomic cloud in a single shot. In contrast to the standard method where the precession of two spatially separated atomic clouds is simultaneously measured to extract their phase difference, which is proportional to the magnetic field gradient, we here demonstrate a gradiometer using a single image of an expanding atomic cloud with the phase difference imprinted along the cloud. Using resonant radio-frequency pulses and Stern-Gerlach imaging, we first demonstrate nutation and Larmor precession of atomic magnetization in an applied magnetic field. Next, we let the cold atom cloud expand in one dimension and apply the protocol for measuring the magnetic field gradient. The resolution of our single-shot gradiometer is not limited by thermal motion of atoms and has an estimated absolute accuracy below $\pm0.2$~mG/cm ($\pm20$~nT/cm).

Emission of correlated jets from a driven matter-wave soliton in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry

We demonstrate the emission of correlated atom jets from a matter-wave soliton in a quasi-one-dimensional optical trap. We characterize the dependence of jet properties on the frequency, amplitude and length of the modulation, and qualitatively reproduce the trends in the mean-field picture with a one-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation simulation. High-order jets are observed for sufficiently long pulses. A double-pulse modulation sequence produces consecutive jets, and a multi-pulse sequence may lead to irregular 3D jets at a finite angle to the direction of the channel. In the limit of vanishing high-order jets beyond-mean-field number correlations of jet pairs are demonstrated, implying possible number squeezing.

Configurational Electronic States in Layered Metallic Dichalcogenides

Mesoscopic irregularly ordered and even amorphous self-assembled electronic structures were recently reported in two-dimensional metallic dichalcogenides (TMDs), created and manipulated with short light pulses or by charge injection. Apart from promising new all-electronic memory devices, such states are of great fundamental importance, since such aperiodic states cannot be described in terms of conventional charge-density-wave (CDW) physics. In this paper we address the problem of metastable mesoscopic configurational charge ordering in TMDs with a sparsely filled charged lattice gas model in which electrons are subject only to screened Coulomb repulsion. The model correctly predicts commensurate CDW states corresponding to different TMDs at magic filling fractions $f_m=1/3,1/4,1/9,1/13,1/16$. Doping away from $f_m$ results either in multiple near-degenerate configurational states, or an amorphous state at the correct density observed by scanning tunnelling microscopy. Quantum fluctuations between degenerate states predict a quantum charge liquid at low temperatures, revealing a new generalized viewpoint on both regular, irregular and amorphous charge ordering in transition metal dichalcogenides.

Cesium bright matter-wave solitons and soliton trains

A study of bright matter-wave solitons of a cesium Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is presented. Production of a single soliton is demonstrated and dependence of soliton atom number on the interatomic interaction is investigated. Formation of soliton trains in the quasi one-dimensional confinement is shown. Additionally, fragmentation of a BEC has been observed outside confinement, in free space. In the end a double BEC production setup for studying soliton collisions is described.

The Equivalence Between Unit-Cell Twinning and Tiling in Icosahedral Quasicrystals

It is shown that tiling in icosahedral quasicrystals can also be properly described by cyclic twinning at the unit cell level. The twinning operation is applied on the primitive prolate golden rhombohedra, which can be considered a result of a distorted face-centered cubic parent structure. The shape of the rhombohedra is determined by an exact space filling, resembling the forbidden five-fold rotational symmetry. Stacking of clusters, formed around multiply twinned rhombic hexecontahedra, keeps the rhombohedra of adjacent clusters in discrete relationships. Thus periodicities, interrelated as members of a Fibonacci series, are formed. The intergrown twins form no obvious twin boundaries and fill the space in combination with the oblate golden rhombohedra, formed between clusters in contact. Simulated diffraction patterns of the multiply twinned rhombohedra and the Fourier transform of an extended model structure are in full accord with the experimental diffraction patterns and can be indexed by means of three-dimensional crystallography.

Nanostructured and Modulated Low-Dimensional Systems

Charge density wave (CDW) ordering in NbSe3 and the structurally related quasi one-dimensional compounds is reconsidered. Since the modulated ground state is characterized by unstable nano-domains, the structural information obtained from diffraction experiments is to be supplemented by some additional information from a method, able to reveal details on a unit cell level. Low-temperature (LT) scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can resolve both, the local atomic structure and the superimposed charge density modulation. It is shown that the established model for NbSe3 with two incommensurate (IC) modes, q1 = (0,0.241,0) and q2 = (0.5,0.260,0.5), locked in at T1=144K and T2=59K and separately confined to two of the three available types of bi-capped trigonal prismatic (BCTP) columns, must be modified. The alternative explanation is based on the existence of modulated layered nano-domains and is in good accord with the available LT STM results. These confirm i.a. the presence of both IC modes above the lower CDW transition temperature. Two BCTP columns, belonging to a symmetry-related pair, are as a rule alternatively modulated by the two modes. Such pairs of columns are ordered into unstable layered nano-domains, whose q1 and q2 sub-layers are easily interchanged. The mutually interchangeable sections of the two unstable IC modes keep a temperature dependent long-range ordering. Both modes can formally be replaced by a single highly inharmonic long-period commensurate CDW.
