Kink plateau dynamics in finite-size lubricant chains

We extend the study of velocity quantization phenomena recently found in the classical motion of an idealized 1D model solid lubricant -- consisting of a harmonic chain interposed between two periodic sliding potentials [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 056101 (2006)]. This quantization is due to one slider rigidly dragging the commensurate lattice of kinks that the chain forms with the other slider. In this follow-up work we consider finite-size chains rather than infinite chains. The finite size (i) permits the development of robust velocity plateaus as a function of the lubricant stiffness, and (ii) allows an overall chain-length re-adjustment which spontaneously promotes single-particle periodic oscillations. These periodic oscillations replace the quasi-periodic motion produced by general incommensurate periods of the sliders and the lubricant in the infinite-size model. Possible consequences of these results for some real systems are discussed.

Hysteresis from dynamically pinned sliding states

We report a surprising hysteretic behavior in the dynamics of a simple one-dimensional nonlinear model inspired by the tribological problem of two sliding surfaces with a thin solid lubricant layer in between. In particular, we consider the frictional dynamics of a harmonic chain confined between two rigid incommensurate substrates which slide with a fixed relative velocity. This system was previously found, by explicit solution of the equations of motion, to possess plateaus in parameter space exhibiting a remarkable quantization of the chain center-of-mass velocity (dynamic pinning) solely determined by the interface incommensurability. Starting now from this quantized sliding state, in the underdamped regime of motion and in analogy to what ordinarily happens for static friction, the dynamics exhibits a large hysteresis under the action of an additional external driving force F_ext. A critical threshold value F_c of the adiabatically applied force F_ext is required in order to alter the robust dynamics of the plateau attractor. When the applied force is decreased and removed, the system can jump to intermediate sliding regimes (a sort of ``dynamic'' stick-slip motion) and eventually returns to the quantized sliding state at a much lower value of F_ext. On the contrary no hysteretic behavior is observed as a function of the external driving velocity.

Asymmetric frictional sliding between incommensurate surfaces

We study the frictional sliding of two ideally incommensurate surfaces with a third incommensurate sheet - a sort of extended lubricant - in between. When the mutual ratios of the three periodicities in this sandwich geometry are chosen to be the golden mean ϕ=(1+\sqrt 5)/2, this system is believed to be statically pinned for any choice of system parameters. In the present study we overcome this pinning and force the two "substrates" to slide with a mutual velocity V_ext, analyzing the resulting frictional dynamics. An unexpected feature is an asymmetry of the relative sliding velocity of the intermediate lubricating sheet relative to the two substrates. Strikingly, the velocity asymmetry takes an exactly quantized value which is uniquely determined by the incommensurability ratio, and absolutely insensitive to all other parameters. The reason for quantization of the velocity asymmetry will be addressed. This behavior is compared and contrasted to the corresponding one obtained for a representative cubic irrational, the spiral mean ω.

Exactly quantized dynamics of classical incommensurate sliders

We report peculiar velocity quantization phenomena in the classical motion of an idealized 1D solid lubricant, consisting of a harmonic chain interposed between two periodic sliders. The ratio v_cm/v_ext of the chain center-of-mass velocity to the externally imposed relative velocity of the sliders stays pinned to exact "plateau" values for wide ranges of parameters, such as sliders corrugation amplitudes, external velocity, chain stiffness and dissipation, and is strictly determined by the commensurability ratios alone. The phenomenon is explained by one slider rigidly dragging the kinks that the chain forms with the other slider. Possible consequences of these results for some real systems are discussed.

Impact of molecular structure on the lubricant squeeze-out between curved surfaces with long range elasticity

The properties of butane (C4H10) lubricants confined between two approaching solids are investigated by a model that accounts for the curvature and elastic properties of the solid surfaces. We consider the linear n-butane and the branched iso-butane. For the linear molecule, well defined molecular layers develop in the lubricant film when the width is of the order of a few atomic diameters. The branched iso-butane forms more disordered structures which permit it to stay liquid-like at smaller surface separations. During squeezing the solvation forces show oscillations corresponding to the width of a molecule. At low speeds (< 0.1 m/s) the last layers of iso-butane are squeezed out before those of n-butane. Since the (interfacial) squeezing velocity in most practical applications is very low when the lubricant layer has molecular thickness, one expects n-butane to be a better boundary lubricant than iso-butane. N-butane possessing a slightly lower viscosity at high pressures, our result refutes the view that squeeze out should be harder for higher viscosities, on the other hand our results are consistent with wear experiments in which n-butane were shown to protect steel surfaces better than iso-butane.

Theoretical aspects of highly correlated fullerides: metal-insulator transition

We review some theoretical aspects connected with the interplay of strong electron correlations and vibron phenomena in negative fullerene ions and in solid fulleride conductors, superconductors and insulators. The first part covers molecular ions, their intra-molecular Jahn-Teller effect, Coulomb (Hund's rule) exchange interactions, molecular vibrons and multiplet splittings. The second part addresses electron propagation in molecular fullerides, with special emphasis given to trivalent cases such as K3C60 and NH3 K3C60, where metallic, superconducting and Mott insulating phases are at play. Dynamical mean field theory approaches to a simplified Hamiltonian for this system are discussed in the light of some of the observed phenomenology. It is argued in particular that NH3 K3C60 is a Mott-Jahn-Teller insulator, which under pressure turns into a strongly correlated superconductor, thus sharing some important elements with the high-Tc cuprates.

Monte Carlo studies of quantum and classical annealing on a double-well

We present results for a variety of Monte Carlo annealing approaches, both classical and quantum, benchmarked against one another for the textbook optimization exercise of a simple one-dimensional double-well. In classical (thermal) annealing, the dependence upon the move chosen in a Metropolis scheme is studied and correlated with the spectrum of the associated Markov transition matrix. In quantum annealing, the Path-Integral Monte Carlo approach is found to yield non-trivial sampling difficulties associated with the tunneling between the two wells. The choice of fictitious quantum kinetic energy is also addressed. We find that a ``relativistic'' kinetic energy form, leading to a higher probability of long real space jumps, can be considerably more effective than the standard one.

Effect of electron correlations in Pd, Ni, and Co monowires

We investigated the effect of mean-field electron correlations on the band electronic structure of Co, Ni, and Pd ultra-thin monatomic nanowires, at the breaking point, by means of density-functional calculations in the self-interaction corrected LDA approach (LDA+SIC) and alternatively by the LDA+$U$ scheme. We find that adding static electron correlations increases the magnetic moment in Pd monowires, but has negligible effect on the magnetic moment in Co and Ni. Furthermore, the number of $d$-dominated conductance channels decreases somewhat compared to the LDA value, but the number of $s$-dominated channels is unaffected, and remains equal to one per spin.

Theoretical evidence for a reentrant phase diagram in {\em ortho-para} mixtures of solid H$_2$

We develop a multi order parameter mean-field formalism for systems of coupled quantum rotors. The scheme is developed to account for systems where {\it ortho-para} distinction is valid. We apply our formalism to solid H$_2$ and D$_2$. We find an anomalous {\it reentrant} orientational phase transition for both systems at thermal equilibrium. The correlation functions of the order parameter indicate short-range order at low temperatures. As temperature is increased the correlation increases along the phase boundary. We also find that even extremely small {\it odd-J} concentrations (1%) can trigger short-range orientational ordering.

Optimization by Quantum Annealing: Lessons from hard 3-SAT cases

The Path Integral Monte Carlo simulated Quantum Annealing algorithm is applied to the optimization of a large hard instance of the Random 3-SAT Problem (N=10000). The dynamical behavior of the quantum and the classical annealing are compared, showing important qualitative differences in the way of exploring the complex energy landscape of the combinatorial optimization problem. At variance with the results obtained for the Ising spin glass and for the Traveling Salesman Problem, in the present case the linear-schedule Quantum Annealing performance is definitely worse than Classical Annealing. Nevertheless, a quantum cooling protocol based on field-cycling and able to outperform standard classical simulated annealing over short time scales is introduced.

Optimization by Quantum Annealing: Lessons from Simple Cases

This paper investigates the basic behavior and performance of simulated quantum annealing (QA) in comparison with classical annealing (CA). Three simple one dimensional case study systems are considered, namely a parabolic well, a double well, and a curved washboard. The time dependent Schrödinger evolution in either real or imaginary time describing QA is contrasted with the Fokker Planck evolution of CA. The asymptotic decrease of excess energy with annealing time is studied in each case, and the reasons for differences are examined and discussed. The Huse-Fisher classical power law of double well CA is replaced with a different power law in QA. The multi-well washboard problem studied in CA by Shinomoto and Kabashima and leading classically to a logarithmic annealing even in the absence of disorder, turns to a power law behavior when annealed with QA. The crucial role of disorder and localization is briefly discussed.

Variational description of Mott insulators

The Gutzwiller wave function for a strongly correlated model can, if supplemented with a long-range Jastrow factor, provide a proper variational description of Mott insulators, so far unavailable. We demonstrate this concept in the prototypical one-dimensional $t-t^\prime$ Hubbard model, where at half filling we reproduce all known phases, namely the ordinary Mott undimerized insulator with power-law spin correlations at small $t^\prime/t$, the spin-gapped metal above a critical $t^\prime/t$ and small $U$, and the dimerized Mott insulator at large repulsion.

Emerging nanomagnetism in 4d transition metal nanowires

Monatomic nanowires of the nonmagnetic transition metals Ru, Rh, and Pd have been studied theoretically, using first-principles computational techniques, in order to investigate the possible onset of magnetism in these nanosystems. Our fully relativistic spin-polarized all-electron density functional calculations reveal the onset of Hund's rule magnetism in nanowires of all three metals, with mean-field moments of 1.1, 0.3, and 0.7 bohr magnetons, respectively, at the equilibrium bond length. An analysis of the band structures indicates that the nanocontact superparamagnetic state suggested by our calculations should affect the ballistic conductance between tips made of Ru, Rh or Pd, leading to possible temperature and magnetic field dependent conductance.

One-Dimensional Multi-Band Correlated Conductors and Anderson Impurity Physics

A single Anderson impurity model recently predicted, through its unstable fixed point, the phase diagram of a two band model correlated conductor, well confirmed by Dynamical Mean Field Theory in infinite dimensions. We study here the one dimensional version of the same model and extract its phase diagram in this opposite limit of reduced dimensionality. As expected for one dimension, the Mott metal-insulator transition at half filling is replaced by a dimerized insulator-undimerized Mott insulator transition, while away from half filling the strongly correlated superconductivity for inverted Hund's rule exchange in infinite dimensions is replaced by dominant pairing fluctuations. Many other aspects of the one dimensional system, in particular the field theories and their symmetries are remarkably the same as those of the Anderson impurity, whose importance appears enhanced.

Strong Correlations in Electron Doped Phthalocyanine Conductors Near Half Filling

We propose that electron doped nontransition metal-phthalocyanines (MPc) like ZnPc and MgPc, similar to those very recently reported, should constitute novel strongly correlated metals. Due to orbital degeneracy, Jahn-Teller coupling and Hund's rule exchange, and with a large on-site Coulomb repulsion, these molecular conductors should display, particularly near half filling at two electrons/molecule, very unconventional properties, including Mott insulators, strongly correlated superconductivity, and other intriguing phases.

Multiplet Structures of Charged Fullerenes

We calculated multiplet splittings for positively and negatively charged fullerene ions within the CAS SCF method, and extracted model parameters for the intramolecular Hamiltonian. The method treats correctly the symmetry of ground and excited states for partially occupied degenerate molecular orbitals. We compare our results to previous calculations by the LDA, MNDO and model SCF methods. The multiplet averaged Coulomb parameter U is about 3.1 eV for electrons and 3.2 eV for holes. The Hund's rule exchange parameter J is found to be 113 meV for electrons and 192 meV for holes.

Quantum annealing of the Traveling Salesman Problem

We propose a path-integral Monte Carlo quantum annealing scheme for the symmetric Traveling Salesman Problem, based on a highly constrained Ising-like representation, and we compare its performance against standard thermal Simulated Annealing. The Monte Carlo moves implemented are standard, and consist in restructuring a tour by exchanging two links (2-opt moves). The quantum annealing scheme, even with a drastically simple form of kinetic energy, appears definitely superior to the classical one, when tested on a 1002 city instance of the standard TSPLIB.
