Correlated continuous time random walks

Continuous time random walks impose a random waiting time before each particle jump. Scaling limits of heavy tailed continuous time random walks are governed by fractional evolution equations. Space-fractional derivatives describe heavy tailed jumps, and the time-fractional version codes heavy tailed waiting times. This paper develops scaling limits and governing equations in the case of correlated jumps. For long-range dependent jumps, this leads to fractional Brownian motion or linear fractional stable motion, with the time parameter replaced by an inverse stable subordinator in the case of heavy tailed waiting times. These scaling limits provide an interesting class of non-Markovian, non-Gaussian self-similar processes.

Large deviations for local time fractional Brownian motion and applications

Let $W^H=\{W^H(t), t \in \rr\}$ be a fractional Brownian motion of Hurst index $H \in (0, 1)$ with values in $\rr$, and let $L = \{L_t, t \ge 0\}$ be the local time process at zero of a strictly stable Lévy process $X=\{X_t, t \ge 0\}$ of index $1<α\leq 2$ independent of $W^H$. The $\a$-stable local time fractional Brownian motion $Z^H=\{Z^H(t), t \ge 0\}$ is defined by $Z^H(t) = W^H(L_t)$. The process $Z^H$ is self-similar with self-similarity index $H(1 - \frac 1 α)$ and is related to the scaling limit of a continuous time random walk with heavy-tailed waiting times between jumps (\cite{coupleCTRW,limitCTRW}). However, $Z^H$ does not have stationary increments and is non-Gaussian. In this paper we establish large deviation results for the process $Z^H$. As applications we derive upper bounds for the uniform modulus of continuity and the laws of the iterated logarithm for $Z^H$.

Symmetric $α$-stable subordinators and Cauchy problems

We survey the results in Nane (E. Nane, Higher order PDE's and iterated processes, Trans. American Math. Soc. (to appear)) and Baeumer, Meerschaert, and Nane (B. Baeumer, M.M. Meerschaert and E. Nane, Brownian subordinators and fractional Cauchy problems: Submitted (2007)) which deal with PDE connection of some iterated processes, and obtain a new probabilistic proof of the equivalence of the higher order PDE's and fractional in time PDE's.

Brownian subordinators and fractional Cauchy problems

A Brownian time process is a Markov process subordinated to the absolute value of an independent one-dimensional Brownian motion. Its transition densities solve an initial value problem involving the square of the generator of the original Markov process. An apparently unrelated class of processes, emerging as the scaling limits of continuous time random walks, involve subordination to the inverse or hitting time process of a classical stable subordinator. The resulting densities solve fractional Cauchy problems, an extension that involves fractional derivatives in time. In this paper, we will show a close and unexpected connection between these two classes of processes, and consequently, an equivalence between these two families of partial differential equations.

Lifetime asymptotics of iterated Brownian motion in R^{n}

Let $τ_{D}(Z) $ be the first exit time of iterated Brownian motion from a domain $D \subset \RR{R}^{n}$ started at $z\in D$ and let $P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z) >t]$ be its distribution. In this paper we establish the exact asymptotics of $P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z) >t]$ over bounded domains as an improvement of the results in \cite{deblassie, nane2}, for $z\in D$ \begin{eqnarray} \lim_{t\to\infty} t^{-1/2}\exp({3/2}π^{2/3}λ_{D}^{2/3}t^{1/3}) P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z)>t]= C(z),\nonumber \end{eqnarray} where $C(z)=(λ_{D}2^{7/2})/\sqrt{3 π}(ψ(z)\int_{D}ψ(y)dy) ^{2}$. Here $λ_{D}$ is the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian ${1/2}Δ$ in $D$, and $ψ$ is the eigenfunction corresponding to $λ_{D}$ . We also study lifetime asymptotics of Brownian-time Brownian motion (BTBM), $Z^{1}_{t}=z+X(|Y(t)|)$, where $X_{t}$ and $Y_{t}$ are independent one-dimensional Brownian motions.

Isoperimetric-type inequalities for iterated Brownian motion in R^n

We extend generalized isoperimetric-type inequalities to iterated Brownian motion over several domains in $\RR{R}^{n}$. These kinds of inequalities imply in particular that for domains of finite volume, the exit distribution and moments of the first exit time for iterated Brownian motion are maximized with the ball $D^{*}$ centered at the origin, which has the same volume as $D$

Iterated Brownian motion in bounded domains in R^n

Let $τ_{D}(Z) $ is the first exit time of iterated Brownian motion from a domain $D \subset \RR{R}^{n}$ started at $z\in D$ and let $P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z) >t]$ be its distribution. In this paper we establish the exact asymptotics of $P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z) >t]$ over bounded domains as an extension of the result in DeBlassie \cite{deblassie}, for $z\in D$ $$ P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z)>t]\approx t^{1/2} \exp(-{3/2}π^{2/3}λ_{D}^{2/3}t^{1/3}), as t\to\infty . $$ We also study asymptotics of the life time of Brownian-time Brownian motion (BTBM), $Z^{1}_{t}=z+X(Y(t))$, where $X_{t}$ and $Y_{t}$ are independent one-dimensional Brownian motions.

Iterated Brownian Motion in Parabola-Shaped Domains

Iterated Brownian motion $Z_{t}$ serves as a physical model for diffusions in a crack. If $τ_{D}(Z) $ is the first exit time of this processes from a domain $D \subset \RR{R}^{n}$, started at $z\in D$, then $P_{z}[τ_{D}(Z)>t]$ is the distribution of the lifetime of the process in $D$. In this paper we determine the large time asymptotics of $P_{z}[τ_{P_α}(Z) > t]$ which gives exponential integrability of $τ_{P_α}(Z) $ for parabola-shaped domains of the form $ P_α=\{(x,Y)\in \RR{R} \times \RR{R}^{n-1}: x>0, |Y| 0.$ We also obtain similar results for twisted domains in $\RR{R}^{2}$ as defined in \cite{DSmits}. In particular, for a planar iterated Brownian motion in a parabola $\mathcal{P}=\{(x,y): x>0, |y|< \sqrt{x} \}$ we find that for $z\in \mathcal{P}$ $$\lim_{t\to\infty} t^{-{1/7}} \log P_{z}[τ_{\mathcal{P}}(Z) >t]= - \frac{7 π^{2}}{2^{25/ 7}}. $$

Laws of the iterated logarithm for α-time Brownian motion

We introduce a class of iterated processes called $α$-time Brownian motion for $0<α\leq 2$. These are obtained by taking Brownian motion and replacing the time parameter with a symmetric $α$-stable process. We prove a Chung-type law of the iterated logarithm (LIL) for these processes which is a generalization of LIL proved in \cite{hu} for iterated Brownian motion. When $α=1$ it takes the following form $$ \liminf_{T\to\infty}T^{-1/2}(\log \log T) \sup_{0\leq t\leq T}|Z_{t}|=π^{2}\sqrt{λ_{1}} a.s. $$ where $λ_{1}$ is the first eigenvalue for the Cauchy process in the interval $[-1,1].$ We also define the local time $L^{*}(x,t)$ and range $R^{*}(t)=|\{x: Z(s)=x \text{for some} s\leq t\}|$ for these processes for $1<α<2$. We prove that there are universal constants $c_{R},c_{L}\in (0,\infty) $ such that $$ \limsup_{t\to\infty}\frac{R^{*}(t)}{(t/\log \log t)^{1/2α}\log \log t}= c_{R} a.s. $$ $$ \liminf_{t\to\infty} \frac{\sup_{x\in \RR{R}}L^{*}(x,t)}{(t/\log \log t)^{1-1/2α}}= c_{L} a.s. $$
