On the homomorphism order of labeled posets

Partially ordered sets labeled with k labels (k-posets) and their homomorphisms are examined. We give a representation of directed graphs by k-posets; this provides a new proof of the universality of the homomorphism order of k-posets. This universal order is a distributive lattice. We investigate some other properties, namely the infinite distributivity, the computation of infinite suprema and infima, and the complexity of certain decision problems involving the homomorphism order of k-posets. Sublattices are also examined.

Characterization of preclones by matrix collections

Preclones are described as the closed classes of the Galois connection induced by a preservation relation between operations and matrix collections. The Galois closed classes of matrix collections are also described by explicit closure conditions.

The arity gap of polynomial functions over bounded distributive lattices

Let A and B be arbitrary sets with at least two elements. The arity gap of a function f: A^n \to B is the minimum decrease in its essential arity when essential arguments of f are identified. In this paper we study the arity gap of polynomial functions over bounded distributive lattices and present a complete classification of such functions in terms of their arity gap. To this extent, we present a characterization of the essential arguments of polynomial functions, which we then use to show that almost all lattice polynomial functions have arity gap 1, with the exception of truncated median functions, whose arity gap is 2.

The submaximal clones on the three-element set with finitely many relative R-classes

For each clone C on a set A there is an associated equivalence relation analogous to Green's R-relation, which relates two operations on A if and only if each one is a substitution instance of the other using operations from C. We study the maximal and submaximal clones on a three-element set and determine which of them have only finitely many relative R-classes.

Generalizations of Swierczkowski's lemma and the arity gap of finite functions

Swierczkowski's Lemma - as it is usually formulated - asserts that if f is an at least quaternary operation on a finite set A and every operation obtained from f by identifying a pair of variables is a projection, then f is a semiprojection. We generalize this lemma in various ways. First, it is extended to B-valued functions on A instead of operations on A and to essentially at most unary functions instead of projections. Then we characterize the arity gap of functions of small arities in terms of quasi-arity, which in turn provides a further generalization of Swierczkowski's Lemma. Moreover, we explicitly classify all pseudo-Boolean functions according to their arity gap. Finally, we present a general characterization of the arity gaps of B-valued functions on arbitrary finite sets A.

Closed classes of functions, generalized constraints and clusters

Classes of functions of several variables on arbitrary non-empty domains that are closed under permutation of variables and addition of dummy variables are characterized in terms of generalized constraints, and hereby Hellerstein's Galois theory of functions and generalized constraints is extended to infinite domains. Furthermore, classes of operations on arbitrary non-empty domains that are closed under permutation of variables, addition of dummy variables and composition are characterized in terms of clusters, and a Galois connection is established between operations and clusters.

Equivalence of operations with respect to discriminator clones

For each clone C on a set A there is an associated equivalence relation, called C-equivalence, on the set of all operations on A, which relates two operations iff each one is a substitution instance of the other using operations from C. In this paper we prove that if C is a discriminator clone on a finite set, then there are only finitely many C-equivalence classes. Moreover, we show that the smallest discriminator clone is minimal with respect to this finiteness property. For discriminator clones of Boolean functions we explicitly describe the associated equivalence relations.

Subfunction relations defined by the clones containing all unary operations

For a class C of operations on a nonempty base set A, an operation f is called a C-subfunction of an operation g, if f = g(h_1, ..., h_n), where all the inner functions h_i are members of C. Two operations are C-equivalent if they are C-subfunctions of each other. The C-subfunction relation is a quasiorder if and only if the defining class C is a clone. The C-subfunction relations defined by clones that contain all unary operations on a finite base set are examined. For each such clone it is determined whether the corresponding partial order satisfies the descending chain condition and whether it contains infinite antichains.

On the effect of variable identification on the essential arity of functions

We show that every function of several variables on a finite set of k elements with n>k essential variables has a variable identification minor with at least n-k essential variables. This is a generalization of a theorem of Salomaa on the essential variables of Boolean functions. We also strengthen Salomaa's theorem by characterizing all the Boolean functions f having a variable identification minor that has just one essential variable less than f.

Column-partitioned matrices over rings without invertible transversal submatrices

Let the columns of a $p \times q$ matrix $M$ over any ring be partitioned into $n$ blocks, $M = [M_1, ..., M_n]$. If no $p \times p$ submatrix of $M$ with columns from distinct blocks $M_i$ is invertible, then there is an invertible $p \times p$ matrix $Q$ and a positive integer $m \leq p$ such that $QM = [QM_1, ..., QM_n]$ is in reduced echelon form and in all but at most $m-1$ blocks $QM_i$ the last $m$ entries of each column are either all zero or they include a non-zero non-unit.
