Infinite dimensional analogues of Choi matrices

For a class of linear maps on a von Neumann factor, we associate two objects, bounded operators and trace class operators, both of which play the roles of Choi matrices. Each of them is positive if and only if the original map on the factor is completely positive. They are also useful to characterize positivity of maps as well as complete positivity. It turns out that such correspondences are possible for every normal completely bounded map if and only if the factor is of type I. As an application, we provide criteria for Schmidt numbers of normal positive functionals in terms of Choi matrices of $k$-positive maps, in infinite dimensional cases. We also define the notion of $k$-superpositive maps, which turns out to be equivalent to the property of $k$-partially entanglement breaking.

Convex cones in mapping spaces between matrix algebras

We introduce the notion of one-sided mapping cones of positive linear maps between matrix algebras. These are convex cones of maps that are invariant under compositions by completely positive maps from either the left or right side. The duals of such convex cones can be characterized in terms of ampliation maps, which can also be used to characterize many notions from quantum information theory---such as separability, entanglement-breaking maps, Schmidt numbers, as well as decomposable maps and $k$-positive maps in functional analysis. In fact, such characterizations hold if and only if the involved cone is a one-sided mapping cone. Through this analysis, we obtain mapping properties for compositions of cones from which we also obtain several equivalent statements of the PPT (positive partial transpose) square conjecture.

Divisibility and Information Flow Notions of Quantum Markovianity for Noninvertible Dynamical Maps

We analyze the relation between CP-divisibility and the lack of information backflow for an arbitrary -- not necessarily invertible -- dynamical map. It is well known that CP-divisibility always implies lack of information backflow. Moreover, these two notions are equivalent for invertible maps. In this letter it is shown that for a map which is not invertible the lack of information backflow always implies the existence of completely positive (CP) propagator which, however, needs not be trace-preserving. Interestingly, for a {\em wide class of image non-increasing dynamical maps} this propagator becomes trace-preserving as well and hence the lack of information backflow implies CP-divisibility. This result sheds new light into the structure of the time-local generators giving rise to CP-divisible evolutions. We show that if the map is not invertible then positivity of dissipation/decoherence rates is no longer necessary for {CP-}divisibility.

Mapping cones and separable states

We study mapping cones and their dual cones of positive maps of the n by n matrices into itself. For a natural class of cones there is a close relationship between maps in the cone, super-positive maps, and separable states. In particular the composition of a map from the cone with a map in the dual cone is super-positive, and so the natural state it defines is separable.

Superposition, transition probabilities and primitive observables in infinite quantum systems

The concepts of superposition and of transition probability, familiar from pure states in quantum physics, are extended to locally normal states on funnels of type I$_\infty$ factors. Such funnels are used in the description of infinite systems, appearing for example in quantum field theory or in quantum statistical mechanics; their respective constituents are interpreted as algebras of observables localized in an increasing family of nested spacetime regions. Given a generic reference state (expectation functional) on a funnel, e.g, a ground state or a thermal equilibrium state, it is shown that irrespective of the global type of this state all of its excitations, generated by the adjoint action of elements of the funnel, can coherently be superimposed in a meaningful manner. Moreover, these states are the extreme points of their convex hull and as such are analogues of pure states. As further support of this analogy, transition probabilities are defined, complete families of orthogonal states are exhibited and a one-to-one correspondence between the states and families of minimal projections on a Hilbert space is established. The physical interpretation of these quantities relies on a concept of primitive observables. It extends the familiar framework of observable algebras and avoids some counter intuitive features of that setting. Primitive observables admit a consistent statistical interpretation of corresponding measurements and their impact on states is described by a variant of the von Neumann-Lüders projection postulate.

Normal states of type III factors

Let M be a factor of type III with separable predual and with normal states phi_1,...,phi_k, omega with omega faithful. Let A be a finite dimensional C*-subalgebra of M. Then it is shown that there is a unitary operator u in M such that phi_i Ad u =omega on A for i=1,...,k. This follows from an embedding result of a finite dimensional C*-algebra with a faithful state into M with finitely many given states. We also give similar embedding results of C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras with faithful states into M. Another similar result for a factor of type II_1 instead of type III holds.

Generation of Mapping Cones from Small Sets

We answer in the affirmative a recently-posed question that asked if there exists an "untypical" convex mapping cone -- i.e., one that does not arise from the transpose map and the cones of k-positive and k-superpositive maps. We explicitly construct such a cone based on atomic positive maps. Our general technique is to consider the smallest convex mapping cone generated by a single map, and we derive several results on such mapping cones. We use this technique to also present several other examples of untypical mapping cones, including a family of cones generated by spin factors. We also provide a full characterization of mapping cones generated by single elements in the qubit case in terms of their typicality.

Mapping Cones are Operator Systems

We investigate the relationship between mapping cones and matrix ordered *-vector spaces (i.e., abstract operator systems). We show that to every mapping cone there is an associated operator system on the space of n-by-n complex matrices, and furthermore we show that the associated operator system is unique and has a certain homogeneity property. Conversely, we show that the cone of completely positive maps on any operator system with that homogeneity property is a mapping cone. We also consider several related problems, such as characterizing cones that are closed under composition on the right by completely positive maps, and cones that are also semigroups, in terms of operator systems.

Tensor products of positive maps of matrix algebras

We give conditions for when the tensor product of two positive maps between matrix algebras is a positive map. This happens when one map belongs to a symmetric mapping cone and the other to the dual cone. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given.

A completely positive map associated with a positive map

We show that each positive map from B(K) to B(H) with K and H finite dimensional Hilbert spaces is a scalar multiple of a map of the form $Tr - ψ$ with $ψ$ completely positive. This is used to give necessary and sufficient conditions for maps to be C-positive for a large class of mapping cones; in particular we apply the results to k-positive maps.

Choi matrices, norms and entanglement associated with positive maps on matrix algebras

We study positive maps of B(K) into B(H) for finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces K and H. Our main emphasis is on how Choi matrices and estimates of their norms with respect to mapping cones reflect various properties of the maps. Special attention will be given to entanglement properties and k-positive maps, in particular tensor products of 2-positive maps. The latter problem is directly related to the question of n-copy distillability of quantum states, for which we obtain a partial result.

Duality of cones of positive maps

We study the so-called K-positive linear maps from B(L) into B(H) for finite dimensional Hilbert spaces L and H and give characterizations of the dual cone of the cone of K-positive maps. Applications are given to decomposable maps and PPT-states.

Separable states and positive maps

Using the natural duality between linear functionals on tensor products of C*-algebras with the trace class operators on a Hilbert space H and linear maps of the C*-algebra into B(H), we study the relationship between separability, entanglement and the Peres condition of states and positivity properties of the linear maps.
