Probing gluon TMDs with reconstructed and tagged heavy flavor hadron pairs at EIC

Study of the transverse structure of the proton is one of the major physics goals of the upcoming Electron Ion Collider (EIC). The gluon transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMD) form an essential focus of this effort and are important towards understanding the angular momentum contribution to proton spin as well as QCD factorization. However, very limited experimental constraints on the gluon TMD exist currently. As the heavy quark production in lepton-nucleon DIS gets a dominant contribution from the photon-gluon-fusion process, heavy quark production makes an attractive tool to probe gluon distributions in nucleons. In this paper we present a study of heavy flavor hadron pair reconstruction at a future EIC detector with MAPS based inner tracking and vertexing subsystems to constrain gluon TMD. We utilize the excellent track pointing resolution provided by the detector to exclusively reconstruct heavy flavor hadron pairs via their hadronic decay channels and also to develop a heavy flavor hadron tagging algorithm. Statistical uncertainty projections on azimuthal asymmetries corresponding to gluon TMD at the EIC is evaluated. The heavy flavor tagging is found to substantially enhance the purity of heavy flavor hadron pair selection, and the statistical precision of the measurement compared to that from exclusive reconstruction. The correlation between the azimuthal angle of the transverse momentum of the gluon initiating the process and that of the corresponding heavy flavor hadron pair was also studied and found to be well correlated. This study opens up heavy flavor hadron pair measurements as an attractive channel to access gluon TMD at the EIC.

A direct-sampling RF receiver for MOLLER beam charge measurement

We have developed and tested a direct-sampling RF receiver capable of measuring the amplitude of a 1497 MHz sinusoidal signal in 0.5 ms integration windows to within <10 ppm relative uncertainty. The receiver is intended for measuring signals from beam current monitoring cavities on the beamline of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Laboratory. The signal strength, frequency, and integration window are consistent with the thus far unmet requirements of the upcoming MOLLER experiment to measure the beam charge for different helicity states.

Constraints on Gluon Distribution Functions in the Nucleon and Nucleus from Open Charm Hadron Production at the Electron-Ion Collider

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory will be a precision Quantum Chromodynamics machine that will enable a vast physics program with electron+proton/ion collisions across a broad center-of-mass range. Measurements of hard probes such as heavy flavor in deep inelastic scatterings will be an essential component to the EIC physics program and are one of the detector R\&D driving aspects. In this paper we study the projected statistical precision of open charm hadron production through exclusive hadronic channel reconstruction with a silicon detector concept currently being developed using a PYTHIA-based simulation. We further study the impact of possible intrinsic charm in the proton on projected data, and estimate the constraint on the nuclear gluon parton distribution function (PDF) from the charm structure functions $F_{2}^{c\overline{c}}$ in $e$+Au collisions using a Bayesian PDF re-weighting technique. Our studies show the EIC will be capable delivering an unprecedented measurement of charm hadron production across a broad kinematic region and will provide strong constraints to both intrinsic charm and nuclear gluon PDFs.

Probing gluon helicity with heavy flavor at the EIC

We propose a new measurement of the heavy flavor hadron double spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering at a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to constrain the polarized gluon distribution function inside the proton. Statistical projection on $D^0$ meson double spin asymmetry is calculated with an EIC central detector using an all-silicon tracker and vertexing subsystem. A first impact study was done by interpreting pseudo-data at next-to-leading order in QCD. The sensitivity of the experimental observable in constraining gluon helicity distribution in a wide range of parton momentum fraction $x$ has been investigated considering different beam energy configurations. This measurement complements the inclusive spin-dependent structure function measurement and provides an opportunity to constrain the gluon helicity distribution in the moderate $x$ region.

EIC Physics from An All-Silicon Tracking Detector

The proposed electron-ion collider has a rich physics program to study the internal structure of protons and heavy nuclei. This program will impose strict requirements on detector design. This paper explores how these requirements can be satisfied using an all-silicon tracking detector, by consideration of three representative probes: heavy flavor hadrons, jets, and exclusive vector mesons.

The RHIC SPIN Program: Achievements and Future Opportunities

Time and again, spin has been a key element in the exploration of fundamental physics. Spin-dependent observables have often revealed deficits in the assumed theoretical framework and have led to novel developments and concepts. Spin is exploited in many parity-violating experiments searching for physics beyond the Standard Model or studying the nature of nucleon-nucleon forces. The RHIC spin program plays a special role in this grand scheme: it uses spin to study how a complex many-body system such as the proton arises from the dynamics of QCD. Many exciting results from RHIC spin have emerged to date, most of them from RHIC running after the 2007 Long Range Plan. In this document we present highlights from the RHIC program to date and lay out the roadmap for the significant advances that are possible with future RHIC running.

Pre-Town Meeting on Spin Physics at an Electron-Ion Collider

A polarized $ep/eA$ collider (Electron--Ion Collider, or EIC), with polarized proton and light-ion beams and unpolarized heavy-ion beams with a variable center--of--mass energy $\sqrt{s} \sim 20$ to $\sim100$~GeV (upgradable to $\sim 150$ GeV) and a luminosity up to $\sim 10^{34} \, \textrm{cm}^{-2} \textrm{s}^{-1}$, would be uniquely suited to address several outstanding questions of Quantum Chromodynamics, and thereby lead to new qualitative and quantitative information on the microscopic structure of hadrons and nuclei. During this meeting at Jefferson Lab we addressed recent theoretical and experimental developments in the spin and the three--dimensional structure of the nucleon (sea quark and gluon spatial distributions, orbital motion, polarization, and their correlations). This mini--review contains a short update on progress in these areas since the EIC White paper~\cite{Accardi:2012qut}.

The RHIC Spin Program: Achievements and Future Opportunities

This document summarizes recent achievements of the RHIC spin program and their impact on our understanding of the nucleon's spin structure, i.e. the individual parton (quark and gluon) contributions to the helicity structure of the nucleon and to understand the origin of the transverse spin phenomena. Open questions are identified and a suite of future measurements with polarized beams at RHIC to address them is laid out. Machine and detector requirements and upgrades are briefly discussed.

Anti-Hyperon polarization in high energy pp collisions with polarized beams

We study the longitudinal polarization of the Sigma_bar and Xi_bar anti-hyperons in polarized high energy pp collisions at large transverse momenta, extending a recent study for the Lambda_bar anti-hyperon. We make predictions by using different parametrizations of the polarized parton densities and models for the polarized fragmentation functions. Similar to the Lambda_bar polarization, the Xi_bar0 and Xi_bar+ polarizations are found to be sensitive to the polarized anti-strange sea in the nucleon. The Sigma_bar- and Sigma_bar+ polarizations show sensitivity to the light sea quark polarizations, Δ\bar u(x) and Δ\bar d(x), and their asymmetry.

Anti-Lambda polarization in high energy pp collisions with polarized beam

We study the polarization of the anti-Lambda particle in polarized high energy pp collisions at large transverse momenta. The anti-Lambda polarization is found to be sensitive to the polarization of the anti-strange sea of the nucleon. We make predictions using different parameterizations of the polarized quark distribution functions. The results show that the measurement of longitudinal anti-Lambda polarization can distinguish different parameterizations, and that similar measurements in the transversely polarized case can give some insights into the transversity distribution of the anti-strange sea of nucleon.

Muon g-2

The muon g-2 collaboration has measured the anomalous magnetic g value of the positive muon to within a relative uncertainty of 0.7 parts per million. The result, a_{μ^+} = 11 659 204(7)(5) x 10^{-10} is in good agreement with the preceding data on a_{μ^+} and a_{μ^-} and has about twice smaller uncertainty. The measurement tests standard model theory, which at the level of the experimental uncertainty involves quantum electrodynamics, quantum chromodynamics, and electroweak interaction in significant ways. The analysis of the anomalous magnetic g value of the negative muon is well underway.
