A toy model for frequency cascade in the nonlinear Schrodinger equation

We present an elementary approach to observe frequency cascade on forced nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equations. The forcing term (which may also appear as a potential term instead) consists of a constant term, perturbed by a modulated Gaussian well. Algebraic computations provide an explicit frequency cascade when time and space derivatives are discarded from the nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation. We provide stability results, showing that when derivatives are incorporated in the model, the initial algebraic solution may be little affected, possibly over long time intervals. Numerical simulations are provided, which support the analysis.

Fully discrete backward error analysis for the midpoint rule applied to the nonlinear Schroedinger equation

The use of symplectic numerical schemes on Hamiltonian systems is widely known to lead to favorable long-time behaviour. While this phenomenon is thoroughly understood in the context of finite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems, much less is known in the context of Hamiltonian PDEs. In this work we provide the first dimension-independent backward error analysis for a Runge-Kutta-type method, the midpoint rule, which shows the existence of a modified energy for this method when applied to nonlinear Schroedinger equations regardless of the level of spatial discretisation. We use this to establish long-time stability of the numerical flow for the midpoint rule.

A generalized spectral concentration problem and the varying masks algorithm

In this paper we generalize the spectral concentration problem as formulated by Slepian, Pollak and Landau in the 1960s. We show that a generalized version with arbitrary space and Fourier masks is well-posed, and we prove some new results concerning general quadratic domains and gaussian filters. We also propose a more general splitting representation of the spectral concentration operator allowing to construct quasi-modes in some situations. We then study its discretization and we illustrate the fact that standard eigen-algorithms are not robust because of a clustering of eigenvalues. We propose a new alternative algorithm that can be implemented in any dimension and for any domain shape, and that gives very efficient results in practice.

Scattering, random phase and wave turbulence

We start from the remark that in wave turbulence theory, exemplified by the cubic twodimensional Schr{\"o}dinger equation (NLS) on the real plane, the regularity of the resonant manifold is linked with dispersive properties of the equation and thus with scattering phenomena. In contrast with classical analysis starting with a dynamics on a large periodic box, we propose to study NLS set on the real plane using the dispersive effects, by considering the time evolution operator in various time scales for deterministic and random initial data. By considering periodic functions embedded in the whole space by gaussian truncation, this allows explicit calculations and we identify two different regimes where the operators converges towards the kinetic operator but with different form of convergence.

Modulation algorithm for the nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation

Based on recent ideas, stemming from the use of bubbles, we discuss an algorithm for the numerical simulation of the cubic nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation with harmonic potential in any dimension, which could be easily extended to other polynomial nonlinearities. For the linear part of the equation, the algorithm consists in discretizing the initial function as a sum of modulated complex functions, each one having its own set of parameters, and then updating the parameters exactly so that the modulated function remains a solution to the equation. When cubic interactions are introduced, the Dirac-Frenkel-MacLachlan principle is used to approximate the time evolution of parameters. We then obtain a grid-free algorithm in any dimension, and it is compared to a spectral method on numerical examples.

Discrete quantum harmonic oscillator and Kravchuk transform

We consider a particular discretization of the harmonic oscillator which admits an orthogonal basis of eigenfunctions called Kravchuk functions possessing appealing properties from the numerical point of view. We analytically prove the almost second-order convergence of these discrete functions towards Hermite functions, uniformly for large numbers of modes. We then describe an efficient way to simulate these eigenfunctions and the corresponding transformation. We finally show some numerical experiments corroborating our different results.

On the influence of the geometry on skin effect in electromagnetism

We consider the equations of electromagnetism set on a domain made of a dielectric and a conductor subdomain in a regime where the conductivity is large. Assuming smoothness for the dielectric--conductor interface, relying on recent works we prove that the solution of the Maxwell equations admits a multiscale asymptotic expansion with profile terms rapidly decaying inside the conductor. This skin effect is measured by introducing a skin depth function that turns out to depend on the mean curvature of the boundary of the conductor. We then confirm these asymptotic results by numerical experiments in various axisymmetric configurations. We also investigate numerically the case of a nonsmooth interface, namely a cylindrical conductor.

Around plane waves solutions of the Schr{\"o}dinger-Langevin equation

We consider the logarithmic Schr{\"o}dinger equations with damping, also called Schr{\"o}dinger-Langevin equation. On a periodic domain, this equation possesses plane wave solutions that are explicit. We prove that these solutions are asymptotically stable in Sobolev regularity. In the case without damping, we prove that for almost all value of the nonlinear parameter, these solutions are stable in high Sobolev regularity for arbitrary long times when the solution is close to a plane wave. We also show and discuss numerical experiments illustrating our results.

Discrete pseudo-differential operators and applications to numerical schemes

We define a class of discrete operators acting on infinite, finite or periodic sequences mimicking the standard properties of pseudo-differential operators. In particular we can define the notion of order and regularity, and we recover the fundamental property that the commutator of two discrete operators gains one order of regularity. We show that standard differential operators acting on periodic functions, finite difference operators and fully discrete pseudo-spectral methods fall into this class of discrete pseudo-differential operators. As examples of practical applications, we revisit standard error estimates for the convergence of splitting methods, obtaining in some Hamiltonian cases no loss of derivative in the error estimates, in particular for discretizations of general waves and/or water-waves equations. Moreover, we give an example of preconditioner constructions inspired by normal form analysis to deal with the similar question for more general cases.

On Linear Damping Around Inhomogeneous Stationary States of the Vlasov-HMF Model

We study the dynamics of perturbations around an inhomogeneous stationary state of the Vlasov-HMF (Hamiltonian Mean-Field) model, satisfying a linearized stability criterion (Penrose criterion). We consider solutions of the linearized equation around the steady state, and prove the algebraic decay in time of the Fourier modes of their density. We prove moreover that these solutions exhibit a scattering behavior to a modified state, implying a linear Landau damping effect with an algebraic rate of damping.

On weakly turbulent solutions to the perturbed linear Harmonic oscillator

We introduce specific solutions to the linear harmonic oscillator, named bubbles. They form resonant families of invariant tori of the linear dynamics, with arbitrarily large Sobolev norms. We use these modulated bubbles of energy to construct a class of potentials which are real, smooth, time dependent and uniformly decaying to zero with respect to time, such that the corresponding perturbed quantum harmonic oscillator admits solutions which exhibit a logarithmic growth of Sobolev norms. The resonance mechanism is explicit in space variables and produces highly oscillatory solutions. We then give several recipes to construct similar examples using more specific tools based on the continuous resonant (CR) equation in dimension two.

Long time behavior of the solutions of NLW on the d-dimensional torus

We consider the non linear wave equation (NLW) on the d-dimensional torus with a smooth nonlinearity of order at least two at the origin. We prove that, for almost any mass, small and smooth solutions of high Sobolev indices are stable up to arbitrary long times with respect to the size of the initial data.To prove this result we use a normal form transformation decomposing the dynamics into low and high frequencies with weak interactions. While the low part of the dynamics can be put under classical Birkhoff normal form, the high modes evolve according to a time dependent linear Hamiltonian system. We then control the global dynamics by using polynomial growth estimates for high modes and the preservation of Sobolev norms for the low modes. Our general strategy applies to any semi-linear Hamiltonian PDEs whose linear frequencies satisfy a very general non resonance condition. The (NLW) equation on a torus is a good example since the standard Birkhoff normal form applies only when d=1 while our strategy applies in any dimension.

Rational normal forms and stability of small solutions to nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations

We consider general classes of nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations on the circle with nontrivial cubic part and without external parameters. We construct a new type of normal forms, namely rational normal forms, on open sets surrounding the origin in high Sobolev regularity. With this new tool we prove that, given a large constant $M$ and a sufficiently small parameter $\varepsilon$, for generic initial data of size $\varepsilon$, the flow is conjugated to an integrable flow up to an arbitrary small remainder of order $\varepsilon^{M+1}$. This implies that for such initial data $u(0)$ we control the Sobolev norm of the solution $u(t)$ for time of order $\varepsilon^{-M}$. Furthermore this property is locally stable: if $v(0)$ is sufficiently close to $u(0)$ (of order $\varepsilon^{3/2}$) then the solution $v(t)$ is also controled for time of order $\varepsilon^{-M}$.

Linearized wave turbulence convergence results for three-wave systems

We consider stochastic and deterministic three-wave semi-linear systems with bounded and almost continuous set of frequencies. Such systems can be obtained by considering nonlinear lattice dynamics or truncated partial differential equations on large periodic domains. We assume that the nonlinearity is small and that the noise is small or void and acting only in the angles of the Fourier modes (random phase forcing). We consider random initial data and assume that these systems possess natural invariant distributions corresponding to some Rayleigh-Jeans stationary solutions of the wave kinetic equation appearing in wave turbulence theory. We consider random initial modes drawn with probability laws that are perturbations of theses invariant distributions. In the stochastic case, we prove that in the asymptotic limit (small nonlinearity, continuous set of frequency and small noise), the renormalized fluctuations of the amplitudes of the Fourier modes converge in a weak sense towards the solution of the linearized wave kinetic equation around these Rayleigh-Jeans spectra. Moreover, we show that in absence of noise, the deterministic equation with the same random initial condition satisfies a generic Birkhoff reduction in a probabilistic sense, without kinetic description at least in some regime of parameters.

Existence and stability of traveling waves for discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equations over long times

We consider the problem of existence and stability of solitary traveling waves for the one dimensional discrete non linear Schroedinger equation (DNLS) with cubic nonlinearity, near the continuous limit. We construct a family of solutions close to the continuous traveling waves and prove their stability over long times. Applying a modulation method, we also show that we can describe the dynamics near these discrete traveling waves over long times.

Analysis of an asymptotic preserving scheme for stochastic linear kinetic equations in the diffusion limit

We present an asymptotic preserving scheme based on a micro-macro decomposition for stochastic linear transport equations in kinetic and diffusive regimes. We perfom a mathematical analysis and prove that the scheme is uniformly stable with respect to the mean free path of the particles in the simple telegraph model and in the general case. We present several numerical tests which validate our scheme.

Uniformly accurate exponential-type integrators for klein-gordon equations with asymptotic convergence to classical splitting schemes in the nonlinear schroedinger limit

We introduce efficient and robust exponential-type integrators for Klein-Gordon equations which resolve the solution in the relativistic regime as well as in the highly-oscillatory non-relativistic regime without any step-size restriction, and under the same regularity assumptions on the initial data required for the integration of the corresponding limit system. In contrast to previous works we do not employ any asymptotic/multiscale expansion of the solution. This allows us derive uniform convergent schemes under far weaker regularity assumptions on the exact solution. In particular, the newly derived exponential-type integrators of first-, respectively, second-order converge in the non-relativistic limit to the classical Lie, respectively, Strang splitting in the nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger limit.

Convergence of a Normalized Gradient Algorithm for Computing Ground States

We consider the approximation of the ground state of the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation by a normalized gradient algorithm combined with linearly implicit time integrator, and finite difference space approximation. We show that this method, also called imaginary time evolution method in the physics literature, is con-vergent, and we provide error estimates: the algorithm converges exponentially towards a modified solitons that is a space discretization of the exact soliton, with error estimates depending on the discretization parameters.
