Tilings of the Sphere by Congruent Pentagons I: Edge Combinations $a^2b^2c$ and $a^3bc$

We develop the basic tools for classifying edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent pentagons. Then we prove that, for the edge combination $a^2b^2c$, such tilings are three two-parameter families of pentagonal subdivisions of the Platonic solids, with $12$, $24$ and $60$ tiles. We also prove that, for the edge combination $a^3bc$, such tilings are two unique double pentagonal subdivisions of the Platonic solids, with $48$ and $120$ tiles.

Survey on real forms of the complex $A_2^{(2)}$-Toda equation and surface theory

The classical result of describing harmonic maps from surfaces into symmetric spaces of reductive Lie groups states that the Maurer-Cartan form with an additional parameter, the so-called loop parameter, is integrable for all values of the loop parameter. As a matter of fact, the same result holds for $k$-symmetric spaces over reductive Lie groups. In this survey we will show that to each of the five different types of real forms for a loop group of $A_2^{(2)}$ there exists a surface class, for which some frame is integrable for all values of the loop parameter if and only if it belongs to one of the surface classes, that is, minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb {CP}^2$, minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb {CH}^2$, timelike minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb {CH}^2_1$, proper definite affine spheres in $\mathbb R^3$ and proper indefinite affine spheres in $\mathbb R^3$, respectively.

Projective loops generate rational loop groups

Rational loops played a central role in Uhlenbeck's construction of harmonic maps into U(n) (chiral model in physics), and they are generated by simple elements with one pole and one zero constructed from Hermitian projections. It has been believed for long time that nilpotent loops should be added to generate rational loop groups with noncompact reality conditions. We prove a somewhat unexpected theorem that projective loops are enough to generate the rational loop groups of GL(n,C), GL(n,R), and U(p, q).

The associated families of semi-homogeneous complete hyperbolic affine spheres

Hildebrand classified all semi-homogeneous cones in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and computed their corresponding complete hyperbolic affine spheres. We compute isothermal parametrizations for Hildebrand's new examples. After giving their affine metrics and affine cubic forms, we construct the whole associated family for each of Hildebrand's examples. The generic member of these affine spheres is given by Weierstrass $\mathscr{P}, ~ζ~\text{and} ~σ$ functions. In general any regular convex cone in $\mathbb{R}^3$ has a natural associated $S^1$-family of such cones, which deserve further studies.

Lagrangian Bonnet pairs in complex space forms

In this paper we first give a Bonnet theorem for conformal Lagrangian surfaces in complex space forms, then we show that any compact Lagrangian surface in the complex space form admits at most one other global isometric Lagrangian surface with the same mean curvature form, unless the Maslov form is conformal. These two Lagrangian surfaces are then called Lagrangian Bonnet pairs. We also studied the question about Lagrangian Bonnet surfaces in $\tilde{M}^2(4c)$, and obtain some interesting results.

Dressing Actions on Proper Definite Affine Spheres

We will first clarify the loop group formulations for both hyperbolic and elliptic definite affine spheres in R^3. Then we classify the rational elements with 3 poles or 6 poles in a real twisted loop group, and compute dressing actions of them on such surfaces. Some new examples with pictures will be produced at last.

On the Orbits of the Magnetized Kepler Problems in Dimension 2k+1

It is demonstrated that, for the recently introduced classical magnetized Kepler problems in dimension $2k+1$, the non-colliding orbits in the "external configuration space" $\mathbb R^{2k+1}\setminus\{\mathbf 0\}$ are all conics, moreover, a conic orbit is an ellipse, a parabola, and a branch of a hyperbola according as the total energy is negative, zero, and positive. It is also demonstrated that the Lie group ${\mr {SO}}^+(1,2k+1)\times {\bb R}_+$ acts transitively on both the set of oriented elliptic orbits and the set of oriented parabolic orbits.

Spectral Curves for Almost-Complex Tori in $ S ^6 $

To each non-isotropic almost-complex immersion of a 2-torus into $ S ^ 6 $ we associate an algebraic curve, called the spectral curve, and a linear flow in the intersection of two Prym varieties on this spectral curve. We show that generically the spectral curve is smooth and compute the dimension of the moduli space of such curves and of the torus in which the eigenline bundles lie.

Transformations of flat Lagrangian immersions and Egoroff nets

We associate a natural $λ$-family ($λ\in \R \setminus \{0\} $) of flat Lagrangian immersions in $\C^n$ with non-degenerate normal bundle to any given one. We prove that the structure equations for such immersions admit the same Lax pair as the first order integrable system associated to the symmetric space $\frac{\U(n) \ltimes \C^n}{\OO(n) \ltimes \R^n}$. An interesting observation is that the family degenerates to an Egoroff net on $\R^n$ when $λ\to 0$. We construct an action of a rational loop group on such immersions by identifying its generators and computing their dressing actions. The action of the generator with one simple pole gives the geometric Ribaucour transformation and we provide the permutability formula for such transformations. The action of the generator with two poles and the action of a rational loop in the translation subgroup produce new transformations. The corresponding results for flat Lagrangian submanifolds in $\C P^{n-1}$ and $\p$-invariant Egoroff nets follow nicely via a spherical restriction and Hopf fibration.

Tzitzéica transformation is a dressing action

We classify the simplest rational elements in a twisted loop group, and prove that dressing actions of them on proper indefinite affine spheres give the classical Tzitzéica transformation and its dual. We also give the group point of view of the Permutability Theorem, construct complex Tzitzéica transformations, and discuss the group structure for these transformations.

Associative Cones and Integrable Systems

We identify R^7 as the pure imaginary part of octonions. Then the multiplication in octonions gives a natural almost complex structure for the unit 6-sphere. It is known that a cone over a surface M in S^6 is an associative submanifold of R^7 if and only if M is almost complex in S^6. In this paper, we show that the Gauss-Codazzi equation for almost complex curves in S^6 is the equation for primitive maps associated to the 6-symmetric space G_2/T^2, and use this to explain some of the known results. Moreover, the equation for S^1-symmetric almost complex curves in S^6 is the periodic Toda lattice associated to G_2, and a discussion of periodic solutions is given.

Curved flats, exterior differential systems, and conservation laws

Let $σ$ be an involution of a real semi-simple Lie group $U$, $U_0$ the subgroup fixed by $σ$, and $U/U_0$ the corresponding symmetric space. Ferus and Pedit called a submanifold $M$ of a rank $r$ symmetric space $U/U_0$ a {\it curved flat} if $T_pM$ is tangent to an $r$-dimensional flat of $U/U_0$ at $p$ for each $p\in M$. They noted that the equation for curved flats is an integrable system. Bryant used the involution $σ$ to construct an involutive exterior differential system $\ci_σ$ such that integral submanifolds of $\ci_σ$ are curved flats. Terng used $r$ first flows in the $U/U_0$-hierarchy of commuting soliton equations to construct the $U/U_0$-system. She showed that the $U/U_0$-system and the curved flat system are gauge equivalent, used the inverse scattering theory to solve the Cauchy problem globally with smooth rapidly decaying initial data, used loop group factorization to construct infinitely many families of explicit solutions, and noted that many these systems occur as the Gauss-Codazzi equations for submanifolds in space forms. The main goals of this paper are: (i) give a review of these known results, (ii) use techniques from soliton theory to construct infinitely many integral submanifolds and conservation laws for the exterior differential system $\ci_σ$.
