Exciton interacting with the phonons of an electronic Wigner crystal

With the advent of atomically thin and tunable van der Waals materials, a two-dimensional electronic Wigner crystal has recently been observed. The smoking gun signal was the appearance of an umklapp branch in optical exciton spectroscopy coming from the periodic potential generated by the Wigner crystal assumed to be static. Vibrations of the Wigner crystal however leads to a gapless phonon spectrum, which may affect the exciton spectrum. To explore this, we develop a field theoretical description of an exciton interacting with electrons forming a Wigner crystal including the coupling to the phonons. We show that importance of the exciton-phonon coupling scales with the exciton-electron interaction strength relative to the typical phonon energy squared. The motion of the exciton leads to two kinds of scattering processes, where the exciton emits a phonon either staying within the same Bloch band (intraband scattering) or changing its band (interband scattering). Using a non-perturbative self-consistent Born approximation, we demonstrate that these scattering processes lead to the formation of quasiparticles (polarons) consisting of the exciton in Bloch states dressed by Wigner crystal phonons. The energy shift and damping of these polarons depend on the electron density in a non-trivial way since it affects both the exciton-phonon interaction strength, as well as the phonon and exciton spectra. In particular, the damping is strongly affected by whether the polaron energy is inside the gapless phonon scattering continuum or not. Using these results, we finally analyse their effects on the observed spectral properties of the exciton.

Two-body continuum states in non-integer geometry

Wave functions, phase shifts and corresponding elastic cross sections are investigated for two short-range interacting particles in a deformed external oscillator field. For this we use the equivalent $d$-method employing a non-integer dimension $d$. Using a square-well potential, we derive analytic expressions for scattering lengths and phase shifts. In particular, we consider the dimension, $d_E$, for infinite scattering length, where the Efimov effect occurs by addition of a third particle. We give explicitly the equivalent continuum wave functions in $d$ and ordinary three dimensional (3D) space, and show that the phase shifts are the same in both methods. Consequently the $d$-method can be used to obtain low-energy two-body elastic cross sections in an external field.

A mobile ion in a Fermi sea

The remarkable single particle control of individual ions combined with the versatility of ultracold atomic gases makes hybrid ion-atom system an exciting new platform for quantum simulation of few- and many-body quantum physics. Here, we study theoretically the properties of a mobile ion immersed in a quantum degenerate gas of fermionic atoms. Using an effective low-energy atom-ion interaction together with a well established approach that includes exactly two-body correlations, we calculate the full spectral response of the ion and demonstrate the existence of several quasiparticle branches, which are charged analogues of the Fermi polaron observed in neutral atomic gases. Due to the long-range nature of the atom-ion interaction, these ionic Fermi polarons have several properties distinct from their neutral counterparts such as the simultaneous presence of several stable states and smooth transitions from repulsive to attractive polarons with increasing interaction strength. Surprisingly, the residue of the ionic polaron is shown to increase with the Fermi density for fixed interaction strength, which is in marked contrast to the neutral polaron. The properties of the ionic polaron approach that of the neutral polaron only in the low density limit where the average interparticle spacing is larger than the characteristic length of the atom-ion interaction. We finally analyse the effects of the Fermi gas on the molecular ions, which are bound atom-dimer states.

Charged polarons and molecules in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We investigate the properties a mobile ion immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) using different theoretical approaches. A coherent state variational ansatz predicts that the ion spectral function exhibits several branches in addition to polaronic quasiparticle states, and we employ a diagrammatic analysis of the ion-atom scattering in the BEC to identify them as arising from the binding of an increasing number of bosons to the ion. We develop a simplified model describing the formation of these molecular ions showing that their spectral weight scales with the number of bound atoms. The number of atoms in the dressing cloud around the ion are calculated from thermodynamic arguments, and we finally show that the dynamics ensuing the injection of an ion into the BEC exhibits various regimes governed by coherent quasiparticle propagation and decay.
