Extracting conformal data from Loschmidt echoes after critical quenches

Conformal field theory provides universal predictions for Loschmidt amplitudes following quenches from product states to critical Hamiltonians. Building on this observation, we develop a route to extracting conformal data from real-time dynamics without preparing critical low-energy states. After analytic continuation, the Loschmidt amplitude is described by a boundary-CFT partition function on a strip, whose transverse transfer matrix encodes both the boundary operator spectrum and the central charge. Local space-time perturbations of the amplitude are governed by equilibrium correlation functions, and therefore provide access to critical exponents. In parallel, generalized temporal entropies exhibit scaling with time analogous to the equilibrium scaling of spatial entanglement entropy. We show that the low-lying boundary spectrum can be reconstructed from the system-size dependence of finite-chain Loschmidt echoes, whose damped oscillations encode differences of boundary scaling dimensions. Finally, we propose a finite-size scaling protocol that can extract these quantities from simulations or experiments on state-of-the-art quantum platforms.

Tensor Renormalization Group for interacting quantum fields

We present a new tensor network algorithm for calculating the partition function of interacting quantum field theories in 2 dimensions. It is based on the Tensor Renormalization Group (TRG) protocol, adapted to operate entirely at the level of fields. This strategy was applied in Ref.[1] to the much simpler case of a free boson, obtaining an excellent performance. Here we include an arbitrary self-interaction and treat it in the context of perturbation theory. A real space analogue of the Wilsonian effective action and its expansion in Feynman graphs is proposed. Using a $λϕ^4$ theory for benchmark, we evaluate the order $λ$ correction to the free energy. The results show a fast convergence with the bond dimension, implying that our algorithm captures well the effect of interaction on entanglement.

Integrability and scattering of the boson field theory on a lattice

A free boson on a lattice is the simplest field theory one can think of. Its partition function can be easily computed in momentum space. However, this straightforward solution hides its integrability properties. Here, we use the methods of exactly solvable models, that are currently applied to spin systems, to a massless and massive free boson on a 2D lattice. The Boltzmann weights of the model are shown to satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation with a uniformization given by trigonometric functions in the massless case, and Jacobi elliptic functions in the massive case. We diagonalize the row-to-row transfer matrix, derive the conserved quantities, and implement the quantum inverse scattering method. Finally, we construct two factorized scattering $S$ matrix models for continuous degrees of freedom using trigonometric and elliptic functions. These results place the free boson model in 2D in the same position as the rest of the models that are exactly solvable à la Yang-Baxter, offering possible applications in quantum computation.

Tensor renormalization group in bosonic field theory

We compute the partition function of a massive free boson in a square lattice using a tensor network algorithm. We introduce a singular value decomposition (SVD) of continuous matrices that leads to very accurate numerical results. It is shown the emergence of a CDL fixed point structure. In the massless limit, we reproduce the results of conformal field theory including a precise value of the central charge.

Quenching the CME via the gravitational anomaly and holography

In the presence of a gravitational contribution to the chiral anomaly, the chiral magnetic effect induces an energy current proportional to the square of the temperature in equilibrium. In holography the thermal state corresponds to a black hole. We numerically study holographic quenches in which a planar shell of scalar matter falls into a black hole and rises its temperature. During the process the momentum density (energy current) is conserved. The energy current has two components, a non-dissipative one induced by the anomaly and a dissipative flow component. The dissipative component can be measured via the drag it asserts on an additional auxiliary color charge. Our results indicate strong suppression very far from equilibrium.

A simple holographic scenario for gapped quenches

We construct gravitational backgrounds dual to a family of field theories parameterized by a relevant coupling. They combine a non-trivial scalar field profile with a naked singularity. The naked singularity is necessary to preserve Lorentz invariance along the boundary directions. The singularity is however excised by introducing an infrared cutoff in the geometry. The holographic dictionary associated to the infrared boundary is developed. We implement quenches between two different values of the coupling. This requires considering time dependent boundary conditions for the scalar field both at the AdS boundary and the infrared wall.

Holographic Quenches with a Gap

In order to holographically model quenches with a gapped final hamiltonian, we consider a gravity-scalar theory in anti-de Sitter space with an infrared hard wall. We allow a time dependent profile for the scalar field at the wall. This induces an energy exchange between bulk and wall and generates an oscillating scalar pulse. We argue that such backgrounds are the counterpart of quantum revivals in the dual field theory. We perform a qualitative comparison with the quench dynamics of the massive Schwinger model, which has been recently analyzed using tensor network techniques. Agreement is found provided the width of the oscillating scalar pulse is inversely linked to the energy density communicated by the quench. We propose this to be a general feature of holographic quenches.

Collapse and Revival in Holographic Quenches

We study holographic models related to global quantum quenches in finite size systems. The holographic set up describes naturally a CFT, which we consider on a circle and a sphere. The enhanced symmetry of the conformal group on the circle motivates us to compare the evolution in both cases. Depending on the initial conditions, the dual geometry exhibits oscillations that we holographically interpret as revivals of the initial field theory state. On the sphere, this only happens when the energy density created by the quench is small compared to the system size. However on the circle considerably larger energy densities are compatible with revivals. Two different timescales emerge in this latter case. A collapse time, when the system appears to have dephased, and the revival time, when after rephasing the initial state is partially recovered. The ratio of these two times depends upon the initial conditions in a similar way to what is observed in some experimental setups exhibiting collapse and revivals.

Holographic Relaxation of Finite Size Isolated Quantum Systems

We study holographically the out of equilibrium dynamics of a finite size closed quantum system in 2+1 dimensions, modelled by the collapse of a shell of a massless scalar field in AdS4. In global coordinates there exists a variety of evolutions towards final black hole formation which we relate with different patterns of relaxation in the dual field theory. For large scalar initial data rapid thermalization is achieved as a priori expected. Interesting phenomena appear for small enough amplitudes. Such shells do not generate a black hole by direct collapse, but quite generically an apparent horizon emerges after enough bounces off the AdS boundary. We relate this bulk evolution with relaxation processes at strong coupling which delay in reaching an ergodic stage. Besides the dynamics of bulk fields, we monitor the entanglement entropy, finding that it oscillates quasi-periodically before final equilibration. The radial position of the traveling shell is brought into correspondence with the evolution of the entanglement pattern in the dual field theory. The entanglement entropy is not only able to portrait the streaming of entangled excitations, but it is also a useful probe of interaction effects.

Bootstrapping gravity solutions

We construct an algorithm to determine all stationary axi-symmetric solutions of 3-dimensional Einstein gravity with a minimally coupled self-interacting scalar field. We holographically renormalize the theory and evaluate then the on-shell action as well as the stress tensor and scalar one-point functions. We study thermodynamics, derive two universal formulas for the entropy and prove that global AdS provides a lower bound for the mass of certain solitons. Several examples are given in detail, including the first instance of locally asymptotically flat hairy black holes and novel asymptotically AdS solutions with non-Brown-Henneaux behavior.

Evolution of Two-Point Functions from Holography

We consider a thermalization process in a 2-dimensional CFT that has a holographic description in terms of the gravitational collapse of a thin shell of null dust. This model represents a sudden perturbation of the CFT vacuum that communicates a uniform energy density to the system. We study the evolution of two-point functions at spacelike separated points (t1,l) and (t2,0), and reproduce the generic pattern first derived from the analysis of quantum quenches to critical systems. A crucial characteristic of these setups is that the excitations generated by the initial perturbation presents non-trivial quantum correlations. As a consequence, for any ti<infinity equilibration is only effective on finite regions whose size grows as a lightfront. The behavior on larger regions is greatly determined by the initial state, which for the quenches we consider and the holographic model has relevant differences. However in both cases for late times the dependence on the scale l of the two-point functions enters through the effective distance l-t1-t2. We interpret the onset of this behavior as an equilibration time for occupation numbers in these 2-dimensional models.

Holographic Evolution of Entanglement Entropy

We study the evolution of entanglement entropy in a 2-dimensional equilibration process that has a holographic description in terms of a Vaidya geometry. It models a unitary evolution in which the field theory starts in a pure state, its vacuum, and undergoes a perturbation that brings it far from equilibrium. The entanglement entropy in this set up provides a measurement of the quantum entanglement in the system. Using holographic techniques we recover the same result obtained before from the study of processes triggered by a sudden change in a parameter of the hamiltonian, known as quantum quenches. Namely, entanglement in 2-dimensional conformal field theories propagates with velocity v^2=1. Both in quantum quenches and in the Vaidya model equilibration is only achieved at the local level. Remarkably, the holographic derivation of this last fact requires information from behind the apparent horizon generated in the process of gravitational collapse described by the Vaidya geometry. In the early stages of the evolution the apparent horizon seems however to play no relevant role with regard to the entanglement entropy. We speculate on the possibility of deriving a thermalization time for occupation numbers from our analysis.

A Crossing-Symmetric Phase for AdS_5 x S^5 Strings

We propose an all-order perturbative expression for the dressing phase of the AdS_5 x S^5 string S-matrix at strong coupling. Moreover, we are able to sum up large parts of this expression. This allows us to start the investigation of the analytic structure of the phase at finite coupling revealing a few surprising features. The phase obeys all known constraints including the crossing relation and it matches with the known physical data at strong coupling. In particular, we recover the bound states of giant magnons recently found by Hofman and Maldacena as poles of the scattering matrix. At weak coupling our proposal seems to differ with gauge theory. A possible solution to this disagreement is the inclusion of additional pieces in the phase not contributing to crossing, which we also study.

Quantum corrections to the string Bethe ansatz

One-loop corrections to the energy of semiclassical rotating strings contain both analytic and non-analytic terms in the 't Hooft coupling. Analytic contributions agree with the prediction from the string Bethe ansatz based on the classical S-matrix, but in order to include non-analytic contributions quantum corrections are required. We find a general expression for the first quantum correction to the string Bethe ansatz.

Finite size effects in ferromagnetic spin chains and quantum corrections to classical strings

N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills operators carrying large charges are dual to semiclassical strings in AdS_5xS^5. The spectrum of anomalous dimensions of very large operators has been calculated solving the Bethe ansatz equations in the thermodynamic limit, and matched to energies of string solitons. We have considered finite size corrections to the Bethe equations, that should correspond to quantum effects on the string side.

Spin chain sigma models with fermions

The complete one-loop planar dilatation operator of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills is isomorphic to the hamiltonian of an integrable PSU(2,2|4) quantum spin chain. We construct the non-linear sigma models describing the continuum limit of the SU(1|3) and SU(2|3) sectors of the complete N=4 chain. We explicitely identify the spin chain sigma model with the one for a superstring moving in AdS_5xS^5 with large angular momentum along the five-sphere.

The SU(3) spin chain sigma model and string theory

The ferromagnetic integrable SU(3) spin chain provides the one loop anomalous dimension of single trace operators involving the three complex scalars of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills. We construct the non-linear sigma model describing the continuum limit of the SU(3) spin chain. We find that this sigma model corresponds to a string moving with large angular momentum in the five-sphere in AdS_5xS^5. The energy and spectrum of fluctuations for rotating circular strings with angular momenta along three orthogonal directions of the five-sphere is reproduced as a particular case from the spin chain sigma model.

Closed Strings Tachyons and Non-Commutative Instabilities

We observe a relation between closed strings tachyons and one-loop instabilities in non-supersymmetric non-commutative gauge theories. In particular we analyze the spectra of type IIB string theory on C^3/Z_N orbifold singularities and the non-commutative field theory that lives on D3 branes located at the singularity. We find a surprising correspondence between the existence or not of one-loop low-momentum instabilities in the non-commutative field theory and the existence or not of tachyons in the closed string twisted sectors. Moreover, the relevant piece of the non-commutative field theory effective action is suggestive of an exchange of closed string modes. This suggests that non-commutative field theories retain some information about the dynamics of the underlying string configuration. Finally, we also comment on a possible relation between closed string tachyon condensation and field theory tachyon condensation.
