Optical Network Digital Twin -- Practical Use Cases and Architecture

With the widespread adoption of AI, machine-to-machine communications are rapidly increasing, reshaping the requirements for optical networks. Recent advances in Gaussian noise modeling for digital coherent transmission have raised expectations for digital-twin-based operation. However, unlike digital twins in wireless communication, which are already well established, significant barriers remain for commercialization in optical networks. This paper discusses the evolving requirements of optical networks in the AI era and proposes a practical Optical Network Digital Twin architecture enabling dynamic and Quality of Transmission aware operation beyond conventional management. Representative use cases, including operator-driven optimization, user-operator collaboration, and multi-operator interconnection, are presented, along with the architectural framework and key challenges toward practical deployment.

Key technologies to accelerate the ICT Green evolution -- An operator's point of view

The exponential growth in networks' traffic accompanied by the multiplication of new services like those promised by the 5G led to a huge increase in the infrastructures' energy consumption. All over the world, many telecom operators are facing the problem of energy consumption and Green networking since many years and they all convey today that it turned from sustainable development initiative to an OPEX issue. Therefore, the challenge to make the ICT sector more energy-efficient and environment-friendly has become a fundamental objective not only to green networks but also in the domain of green services that enable the ICT sectors to help other industrial sector to clean their own energy consumption. The present paper is a point of view of a European telecom operator regarding green networking. We address some technological advancements that would enable to accelerate this ICT green evolution after more than 15 years of field experience and international collaborative research projects. Basically, the paper is a global survey of the evolution of the ICT industry in green networks including optical and wireless networks and from hardware improvement to the software era as well as the green orchestration.

Getting routers out of the core: Building an optical wide area network with "multipaths"

We propose an all-optical networking solution for a wide area network (WAN) based on the notion of multipoint-to-multipoint lightpaths that, for short, we call "multipaths". A multipath concentrates the traffic of a group of source nodes on a wavelength channel using an adapted MAC protocol and multicasts this traffic to a group of destination nodes that extract their own data from the confluent stream. The proposed network can be built using existing components and appears less complex and more efficient in terms of energy consumption than alternatives like OPS and OBS. The paper presents the multipath architecture and compares its energy consumption to that of a classical router-based ISP network. A flow-aware dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm is proposed and shown to have excellent performance in terms of throughput and delay.
