The Gildener-Weinberg two-Higgs doublet model at two loops

The Gildener-Weinberg two-Higgs doublet model (GW-2HDM) provides a naturally light and aligned Higgs boson, $H = H(125)$. It has been studied in the one-loop approximation of its effective potential, $V_1$. An important consequence is that the masses of the model's BSM Higgs bosons ($H',A,H^\pm$) are bounded by the sum rule $\left(M_{H'}^4 + M_A^4 + 2M_{H^\pm}^4\right)^{1/4} = 540\,{\rm GeV}$. Although they are well within reach of the LHC, searches for them have been stymied by large QCD backgrounds. Another consequence is that $H$ is highly aligned, i.e., $H$--$H'$ mixing is small and $H$ has only Standard Model couplings. A corollary of this alignment is that search modes such as $H',\,A \leftrightarrow W^+W^-,\,ZZ,\,HZ$ and $H^\pm \leftrightarrow W^\pm Z,\,W^\pm H$ are greatly suppressed. To assess the accuracy of the sum rule and Higgs alignment, we study this model in two loops. This calculation is complicated by having many new contributions. We present two formulations of it to calculate the $H$--$H'$ mass matrix, its eigenvectors $H_1,\,H_2$, and the mass $M_{H_2}$ while fixing $M_{H_1}= 125\,{\rm GeV}$. They give similar results, in accord with the one-loop results. Requiring $M_A = M_{H^\pm}$, we find $180\,{\rm GeV} < M_{A,H^\pm} < 380$--$425\,{\rm GeV}$ and $550$--$700\,{\rm GeV} > M_{H_2} > 125\,{\rm GeV}$, with $M_{H_2}$ decreasing as $M_{A,H^\pm}$ increase. The corrections to $H$-alignment are below ${\cal{O}}(1\%)$. So, the BSM searches above will remain fruitless. Finding the BSM Higgses requires improved sensitivity to their low masses. We discuss two possible searches for this.

Higgs alignment and the top quark

There is a surprising connection between the top quark and Higgs alignment in Gildener-Weinberg multi-Higgs doublet models. Were it not for the top quark and its large mass, the coupling of the 125 GeV Higgs boson $H$ to gauge bosons and fermions would be indistinguishable from those of the Standard Model Higgs. The top quark's coupling to a single Higgs doublet breaks this perfect alignment in higher orders of the Coleman-Weinberg loop expansion of the effective potential. But the effect is still small, $< {\cal{O}}(1\%)$, and probably experimentally inaccessible.

Mesons with Beauty and Charm: New Horizons in Spectroscopy

The $B_c ^+$ family of $(c\bar{b})$ mesons with beauty and charm is of special interest among heavy quarkonium systems. The $B_c ^+$ mesons are intermediate between $(c\bar{c})$ and $(b\bar{b})$ states both in mass and size, so many features of the $(c\bar{b})$ spectrum can be inferred from what we know of the charmonium and bottomonium systems. The unequal quark masses mean that the dynamics may be richer than a simple interpolation would imply, in part because the charmed quark moves faster in $B_c$ than in the $J/ψ$. Close examination of the $B_c ^+$ spectrum can test our understanding of the interactions between heavy quarks and antiquarks and may reveal where approximations break down. ...

Quarkonium wave functions at the origin: an update

Using a newly developed interquark potential, we tabulate values of the radial Schrödinger wave function or its first nonvanishing derivative at zero quark--antiquark separation, for $c\bar{c}$, $c\bar{b}$, and $b\bar{b}$ levels that lie below, or just above, the flavor threshold. These quantities are required inputs for evaluating quarkonium production cross sections.

Heavy-quark symmetry implies stable heavy tetraquark mesons $Q_iQ_j \bar q_k \bar q_l$

For very heavy quarks $Q$, relations derived from heavy-quark symmetry predict the existence of novel narrow doubly heavy tetraquark states of the form $Q_iQ_j \bar q_k \bar q_l$ (subscripts label flavors), where $q$ designates a light quark. By evaluating finite-mass corrections, we predict that double-beauty states composed of $bb\bar u \bar d$, $bb\bar u \bar s$, and $bb\bar d \bar s$ will be stable against strong decays, whereas the double-charm states $cc \bar q_k \bar q_l$, mixed beauty+charm states $bc \bar q_k \bar q_l$, and heavier $bb \bar q_k \bar q_l$ states will dissociate into pairs of heavy-light mesons. Observation of a new double-beauty state through its weak decays would establish the existence of tetraquarks and illuminate the role of heavy color-antitriplet diquarks as hadron constituents.

Technicolor at the Tevatron

We propose that the 3.2 sigma excess at ~150 GeV in the dijet mass spectrum of W + jets reported by CDF is the technipion $π_T$ of low-scale technicolor. Its relatively large cross section is due to production of a narrow $Wjj$ resonance, the technirho, which decays to W + $π_T$. We discuss ways to enhance and strengthen the technicolor hypothesis and suggest companion searches at the Tevatron and LHC.

New states above charm threshold

We revise and extend expectations for the properties of charmonium states that lie above charm threshold, in light of new experimental information. We refine the Cornell coupled-channel model for the coupling of c-cbar levels to two-meson states, defining resonance masses and widths by pole positions in the complex energy plane, and suggest new targets for experiment.

Charmonium levels near threshold and the narrow state $X(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}\jpsi$

We explore the influence of open-charm channels on charmonium properties, and profile the 1:3D2, 1:3D3 and 2:1P1 charmonium candidates for X(3872). The favored candidates, the 1:3D2 and 1:3D3 levels, both have prominent radiative decays. The 1:3D2 might be visible in the $D^{0}\bar{D}^{*0}$ channel, while the dominant decay of the 1:3D3 state should be into $D\bar{D}$. We propose that additional discrete charmonium levels can be discovered as narrow resonances of charmed and anticharmed mesons.

Chiral Multiplets of Heavy-Light Mesons

The recent discovery of a narrow resonance in D_s+pi^0 by the BABAR collaboration is consistent with the interpretation of a heavy J^P(0+,1+) spin multiplet. This system is the parity partner of the groundstate (0-,1-) multiplet, which we argue is required in the implementation of SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R chiral symmetry in heavy-light meson systems. The (0+,1+)->(0-,1-)+pi transition couplings satisfy a Goldberger-Treiman relation, g_pi = Delta(M)/f_pi, where Delta(M) is the mass gap. The BABAR resonance fits the 0+ state, with a kinematically blocked principal decay mode to D+K. The allowed D_s+pi, D_s+2pi and electromagnetic transitions are computed from the full chiral theory and found to be suppressed, consistent with the narrowness of the state. This state establishes the chiral mass difference for all such heavy-quark chiral multiplets, and precise predictions exist for the analogous B_s and strange doubly-heavy baryon states.

B-Meson Gateways to Missing Charmonium Levels

We outline a coherent strategy for exploring the four remaining narrow charmonium states [$η_{c}^{\prime}(2\slj{1}{1}{0})$, $h_{c}(1\slj{1}{2}{1})$, $η_{c2}(1\slj{1}{3}{2})$, and $ψ_{2}(1\slj{3}{3}{2})$] expected to lie below charm threshold. Produced in $B$-meson decays, these levels should be identifiable \textit{now} via striking radiative transitions among charmonium levels and in exclusive final states of kaons and pions. Their production and decay rates will provide much needed new tests for theoretical descriptions of heavy quarkonia.

Mesons with Beauty and Charm: Spectroscopy

Applying knowledge of the interaction between heavy quarks derived from the study of $c\overline{c}$ and $b\overline{b}$ bound states, we calculate the spectrum of $c\overline{b}$ mesons. We compute transition rates for the electromagnetic and hadronic cascades that lead from excited states to the $^1\text{S}_0$ ground state, and briefly consider the prospects for experimental observation of the spectrum.

Properties of Orbitally Excited Heavy-Light Mesons

Orbitally excited heavy-light mesons are potentially important as tools for tagging the flavors and momenta of ground-state pseudoscalars detected through weak decays. We use heavy-quark symmetry supplemented by insights gleaned from potential models to estimate masses and widths of $p$-wave $B$, $B_s$, and $D_s$ mesons. We generalize these results to higher excitations.

Flavor Asymmetry of the Nucleon Sea: Consequences for Dilepton Production

Parton distributions derived from a chiral quark model that generates an excess of down quarks and antiquarks in the proton's sea satisfactorily describe the measured yields of muon pairs produced in proton-nucleus collisions. Comparison of dilepton yields from hydrogen and deuterium targets promises greater sensitivity to the predicted flavor asymmetry.
