Solar Wind Proton Heating and its Effect on Temperature Anisotropy Evolution between 0.05 and 1 au

This study focuses on the radial evolution of the solar wind proton adiabatic invariants and temperature anisotropies in the inner heliosphere. More specifically, we study in-situ measurements provided by the Parker Solar Probe, between 0.05 au and 0.25 au from the Sun, and Solar Orbiter spacecraft between 0.3 au and 1 au. Throughout the studied range of radial distances, we observe a significant average heating in the direction perpendicular to the local magnetic field for both fast and slow solar wind populations. On the other hand, there is no clear deviation from adiabaticity in the parallel direction regardless of the wind speed. The perpendicular heating is enough to significantly reduce the generation of the temperature anisotropy expected from a double adiabatic evolution. Despite the heating, an important portion of the solar wind (especially the slower wind streams) develops substantial anisotropies with higher parallel temperatures, which eventually become constrained by kinetic firehose instabilities.

Tearing Driven Reconnection: Energy Conversion Involving Firehose Kinetic Instabilities (2D Hybrid Möbius Simulations)

This study focuses on energy conversion related to tearing-driven magnetic reconnection in the context of weakly collisional astrophysical plasmas. We present results from a two-dimensional hybrid particle-in-cell simulation employing novel periodic conditions with a topology akin to the Möbius strip, which double the computation efficiency as compared to regular periodic conditions. Evaluation of the ion electric work rate ($\mathbf{j}_i \cdot \mathbf{E}$) and pressure strain interaction ($\mathbf{P}_i : \mathbf{\nabla u}_i)$ shows that most of the energy conversion occurs during the nonlinear phase of the instability, where magnetic energy is transferred towards ion kinetic energy (bulk outflows) and internal energy (heating). These energy conversion rates are of the same order but inhomogeneous. Heating predominantly occurs within the magnetic islands, while near the X-points, nearly the same amount of magnetic energy is transferred to bulk plasma flow and heating. The reconnected plasma moreover exhibits an ion temperature higher parallel than perpendicular to the local magnetic field $\mathbf{B}$. This temperature anisotropy is sustained by the islands' contraction, but eventually gets regulated by kinetic firehose instabilities (parallel and oblique), and/or firehose-like processes, whose main effect is to redistribute the internal energy from the parallel to the perpendicular direction.

Radial evolution of a density structure within a solar wind magnetic sector boundary

This study focuses on a radial alignment between Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and Solar Orbiter (SolO) on the 29$^{\text{th}}$ of April 2021 (during a solar minimum), when the two spacecraft were respectively located at $\sim 0.075$ and $\sim 0.9$~au from the Sun. A previous study of this alignment allowed the identification of the same density enhancement (with a time scale of $\sim$1.5~h), and substructures ($\sim$20-30~min timescale), passing first by PSP, and then SolO after a $\sim 138$~h propagation time in the inner heliosphere. We show here that this structure belongs to the large scale heliospheric magnetic sector boundary. In this region, the density is dominated by radial gradients, whereas the magnetic field reversal is consistent with longitudinal gradients in the Carrington reference frame. We estimate the density structure radial size to remain of the order L$_R \sim 10^6$~km, while its longitudinal and latitudinal sizes, are estimated to expand from L$_{φ, θ} \sim 10^4$-$10^5$~km in the high solar corona, to L$_{φ, θ} \sim 10^5$-$10^6$~km at PSP, and L$_{φ, θ} \sim 10^6$-$10^7$~km at SolO. This implies a strong evolution of the structure's aspect ratio during the propagation, due to the plasma's nearly spherical expansion. The structure's shape is therefore inferred to evolve from elongated in the radial direction at $\sim$2-3 solar radii (high corona), to sizes of nearly the same order in all directions at PSP, and then becoming elongated in the directions transverse to the radial at SolO. Measurements are not concordant with local reconnection of open solar wind field lines, so we propose that the structure has been generated through interchange reconnection near the tip of a coronal streamer.

Identification of a Single Plasma Parcel during a Parker Solar Probe-Solar Orbiter radial alignment

Configurations where two spacecraft, such as Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and Solar Orbiter (SolO), are radially aligned provide opportunities to study the evolution of a single solar wind parcel during so called plasma line-ups. The most critical part of such studies is arguably the identification of what can be considered a same plasma crossing both spacecraft. We present here a method that allowed us to find what we believe to be the same plasma parcel passing through PSP ($\sim 0.075$ au) and SolO ($\sim 0.9$ au) after their radial alignment the 29/04/2021. We started by modeling the plasma propagation in order to get a first estimation of the plasma line-up intervals. The identification of the same density structure (with a crossing duration $\sim 1.5$ h) passing through the two spacecraft allows to precise and confirm this estimation. Our main finding is how stable the density structure is, remaining well recognizable from PSP to SolO despite its $\sim 137$ hours journey in the inner heliosphere. We moreover found that the studied slow solar wind plasma parcel undergone a significant acceleration (from $\sim 200$ to $\sim 300$ km/s) during its propagation.
