Complete Compositional Syntax for Finite Transducers on Finite and Bi-Infinite Words

Minimizing finite automata, proving trace equivalence of labelled transition systems or representing sofic subshifts involve very similar arguments, which suggests the possibility of a unified formalism. We propose finite states non-deterministic transducer as a lingua franca for automata theory, transition systems, and sofic subshifts. We introduce a compositional diagrammatical syntax for transducers in form of string diagrams interpreted as relations. This syntax comes with sound rewriting rules allowing diagrammatical reasoning. Our main result is the completeness of our equational theory, ensuring that language-equivalence, trace-equivalence, or subshift equivalence can always be proved using our rewriting rules.

Period-rigidity of one-relator groups

We follow in this paper a recent line of work, consisting in characterizing the periodically rigid finitely generated groups, i.e., the groups for which every subshift of finite type which is weakly aperiodic is also strongly aperiodic. In particular, we show that every finitely generated group admitting a presentation with one reduced relator and at least $3$ generators is periodically rigid if and only if it is either virtually cyclic or torsion-free virtually $\mathbb Z^2$. This proves a special case of a recent conjecture of Bitar (2024). We moreover prove that period rigidity is preserved under taking subgroups of finite indices. Using a recent theorem of MacManus (2023), we derive from our results that Bitar's conjecture holds in groups whose Cayley graphs are quasi-isometric to planar graphs.

Aperiodicity in Quantum Wang Tilings

By reformulating Wang tiles with tensors, we propose a natural generalization to the probabilistic and quantum setting. In this new framework, we introduce notions of tilings and periodicity directly extending their classical counterparts. In the one dimensional case, we recover the decidability of the generalized domino problem by linking it to the trace characterization of nilpotent matrices. In the two-dimensional case, we provide extension of weak and strong aperiodicity respectively and show the equivalence of those generalized notions, extending the well known equivalence in the classical case. We also exhibit a quantum tile set being aperiodic while its underlying classical tile set is not, proving that quantum interference can suppress periodic patterns and paving the way to the investigation of a new kind of aperiodicity. Finally, we highlight the many new research directions opened by this generalization of Wang tiles, related to (quantum) cellular automata, condensed matter physics, symbolic dynamics and more.

Weakly and Strongly Aperiodic Subshifts of Finite Type on Baumslag-Solitar Groups

We study the periodicity of subshifts of finite type (SFT) on Baumslag-Solitar groups. We show that for residually finite Baumslag-Solitar groups there exist both strongly and weakly-but-not-strongly aperiodic SFTs. In particular, this shows that unlike $\mathbb{Z}^2$, but like $\mathbb{Z}^3$, strong and weak aperiodic SFTs are different classes of SFTs in residually finite BS groups. More precisely, we prove that a weakly aperiodic SFT on BS(m,n) due to Aubrun and Kari is, in fact, strongly aperiodic on BS(1,n); and weakly but not strongly aperiodic on any other BS(m,n). In addition, we exhibit an SFT which is weakly but not strongly aperiodic on BS(1,n); and we show that there exists a strongly aperiodic SFT on BS(n,n).

Compositionality of planar perfect matchings

We exhibit a strong connection between the matchgate formalism introduced by Valiant and the ZW-calculus of Coecke and Kissinger. This connection provides a natural compositional framework for matchgate theory as well as a direct combinatorial interpretation of the diagrams of ZW-calculus through the perfect matchings of their underlying graphs. We identify a precise fragment of ZW-calculus, the planar W-calculus, that we prove to be complete and universal for matchgates, that are linear maps satisfying the matchgate identities. Computing scalars of the planar W-calculus corresponds to counting perfect matchings of planar graphs, and so can be carried in polynomial time using the FKT algorithm, making the planar W-calculus an efficiently simulable fragment of the ZW-calculus, in a similar way that the Clifford fragment is for ZX-calculus. This work opens new directions for the investigation of the combinatorial properties of ZW-calculus as well as the study of perfect matching counting through compositional diagrammatical technics.

Decidability and Periodicity of Low Complexity Tilings

In this paper we study colorings (or tilings) of the two-dimensional grid $\mathbb{Z}^2$. A coloring is said to be valid with respect to a set $P$ of $n\times m$ rectangular patterns if all $n\times m$ sub-patterns of the coloring are in $P$. A coloring $c$ is said to be of low complexity with respect to a rectangle if there exist $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$ and a set $P$ of $n\times m$ rectangular patterns such that $c$ is valid with respect to $P$ and $|P|\leq nm$. Open since it was stated in 1997, Nivat's conjecture states that such a coloring is necessarily periodic. If Nivat's conjecture is true, all valid colorings with respect to $P$ such that $|P|\leq mn$ must be periodic. We prove that there exists at least one periodic coloring among the valid ones. We use this result to investigate the tiling problem, also known as the domino problem, which is well known to be undecidable in its full generality. However, we show that it is decidable in the low-complexity setting. Then, we use our result to show that Nivat's conjecture holds for uniformly recurrent configurations. These results also extend to other convex shapes in place of the rectangle.\\ After that, we prove that the $nm$ bound is multiplicatively optimal for the decidability of the domino problem, as for all $\varepsilon>0$ it is undecidable to determine if there exists a valid coloring for a given $m,n\in \mathbb{N}$ and set of rectangular patterns $P$ of size $n\times m$ such that $|P|\leq (1+\varepsilon)nm$. We prove a slightly better bound in the case where $m=n$, as well as constructing aperiodic SFTs of pretty low complexity.\\ This paper is an extended version of a paper published in STACS 2020.

Pattern Complexity of Aperiodic Substitutive Subshifts

This paper aims to better understand the link better understand the links between aperiodicity in subshifts and pattern complexity. Our main contribution deals with substitutive subshifts, an equivalent to substitutive tilings in the context of symbolic dynamics. For a class of substitutive subshifts, we prove a quadratic lower bound on their pattern complexity. Together with an already known upper bound, this shows that this class of substitutive subshifts has a pattern complexity in $Θ(n^2)$. We also prove that the recent bound of Kari and Moutot, showing that any aperiodic subshift has pattern complexity at least $mn+1$, is optimal for fixed $m$ and $n$.

Computational Limitations of Affine Automata

We present two new results on the computational limitations of affine automata. First, we show that the computation of bounded-error rational-values affine automata is simulated in logarithmic space. Second, we give an impossibility result for algebraic-valued affine automata. As a result, we identify some unary languages (in logarithmic space) that are not recognized by algebraic-valued affine automata with cutpoints.

The domino problem is undecidable on surface groups

We show that the domino problem is undecidable on orbit graphs of non-deterministic substitutions which satisfy a technical property. As an application, we prove that the domino problem is undecidable for the fundamental group of any closed orientable surface of genus at least 2.

Nivat's Conjecture and Pattern Complexity in Algebraic Subshifts

We study Nivat's conjecture on algebraic subshifts and prove that in some of them every low complexity configuration is periodic. This is the case in the Ledrappier subshift (the 3-dot system) and, more generally, in all two-dimensional algebraic subshifts over $\mathbb{F}_p$ defined by a polynomial without line polynomial factors in more than one direction. We also find an algebraic subshift that is defined by a product of two line polynomials that has this property (the 4-dot system) and another one that does not.

Slopes of 3-dimensional Subshifts of Finite Type

In this paper we study the directions of periodicity of three-dimensional subshifts of finite type (SFTs) and in particular their slopes. A configuration of a subshift has a slope of periodicity if it is periodic in exactly one direction, the slope being the angle of the periodicity vectors. In this paper, we prove that any $Σ^0_2$ set may be realized as a a set of slopes of an SFT.

On the computational power of affine automata

We investigate the computational power of affine automata (AfAs) introduced in [4]. In particular, we present a simpler proof for how to change the cutpoint for any affine language and a method how to reduce error in bounded error case. Moreover, we address to the question of [4] by showing that any affine language can be recognized by an AfA with certain limitation on the entries of affine states and transition matrices. Lastly, we present the first languages shown to be not recognized by AfAs with bounded-error.
