Spin models with random anisotropy and reflection symmetry

We study the critical behavior of a general class of cubic-symmetric spin systems in which disorder preserves the reflection symmetry $s_a\to -s_a$, $s_b\to s_b$ for $b\not= a$. This includes spin models in the presence of random cubic-symmetric anisotropy with probability distribution vanishing outside the lattice axes. Using nonperturbative arguments we show the existence of a stable fixed point corresponding to the random-exchange Ising universality class. The field-theoretical renormalization-group flow is investigated in the framework of a fixed-dimension expansion in powers of appropriate quartic couplings, computing the corresponding $β$-functions to five loops. This analysis shows that the random Ising fixed point is the only stable fixed point that is accessible from the relevant parameter region. Therefore, if the system undergoes a continuous transition, it belongs to the random-exchange Ising universality class. The approach to the asymptotic critical behavior is controlled by scaling corrections with exponent $Δ= - α_r$, where $α_r\simeq -0.05$ is the specific-heat exponent of the random-exchange Ising model.

Confining strings in representations with common $n$-ality

We study the spectrum of confining strings in SU(3) pure gauge theory, by means of lattice Monte Carlo simulations, using torelon operators in different representations of the gauge group. Our results provide direct evidence that the string spectrum is according to predictions based on $n$-ality. Torelon correlations in the rank-2 symmetric channel appear to be well reproduced by a two-exponential picture, in which the lowest state is given by the fundamental string $σ_1=σ$, the heavier string state is such that the ratio $σ_2/σ_1$ is approximately given by the Casimir ratio $C_{\rm sym}/C_{\rm f} = 5/2$, and the torelon has a much smaller overlap with the lighter fundamental string state.

Crossover from random-exchange to random-field critical behavior in Ising models

We compute the crossover exponent $ϕ$ describing the crossover from the random-exchange to the random-field critical behavior in Ising systems. For this purpose, we consider the field-theoretical approach based on the replica method, and perform a six-loop calculation in the framework of a fixed-dimension expansion. The crossover from random-exchange to random-field critical behavior has been observed in dilute anisotropic antiferromagnets, such as Fe$_x$Zn$_{1-x}$F$_2$ and Mn$_x$Zn$_{1-x}$F$_2$, when applying an external magnetic field. Our result $ϕ=1.42(2)$ for the crossover exponent is in good agreement with the available experimental estimates.

On the nature of the finite-temperature transition in QCD

We discuss the nature of the finite-temperature transition in QCD with N_f massless flavors. Universality arguments show that a continuous (second-order) transition must be related to a 3-D universality class characterized by a complex N_f X N_f matrix order parameter and by the symmetry-breaking pattern [SU(N_f)_L X SU(N_f)_R]/Z(N_f)_V -> SU(N_f)_V/Z(N_f)_V, or [U(N_f)_L X U(N_f)_R]/U(1)_V -> U(N_f)_V/U(1)_V if the U(1)_A symmetry is effectively restored at T_c. The existence of any of these universality classes requires the presence of a stable fixed point in the corresponding 3-D Phi^4 theory with the expected symmetry-breaking pattern. Otherwise, the transition is of first order. In order to search for stable fixed points in these Phi^4 theories, we exploit a 3-D perturbative approach in which physical quantities are expanded in powers of appropriate renormalized quartic couplings. We compute the corresponding Callan-Symanzik beta-functions to six loops. We also determine the large-order behavior to further constrain the analysis. No stable fixed point is found, except for N_f=2, corresponding to the symmetry-breaking pattern [SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R]/Z(2)_V -> SU(2)_V/Z(2)_V equivalent to O(4) -> O(3). Our results confirm and put on a firmer ground earlier analyses performed close to four dimensions, based on first-order calculations in the framework of the epsilon=4-d expansion. These results indicate that the finite-temperature phase transition in QCD is of first order for N_f>2. A continuous transition is allowed only for N_f=2. But, since the theory with symmetry-breaking pattern [U(2)_L X U(2)_R]/U(1)_V -> U(2)_V/U(1)_V does not have stable fixed points, the transition can be continuous only if the effective breaking of the U(1)_A symmetry is sufficiently large.

The critical behavior of magnetic systems described by Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson field theories

We discuss the critical behavior of several three-dimensional magnetic systems, such as pure and randomly dilute (anti)ferromagnets and stacked triangular antiferromagnets. We also discuss the nature of the multicritical points that arise in the presence of two distinct O(n)-symmetric order parameters and, in particular, the nature of the multicritical point in the phase diagram of high-T_c superconductors that has been predicted by the SO(5) theory. For each system, we consider the corresponding Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson field theory and review the field-theoretical results obtained from the analysis of high-order perturbative series in the frameworks of the epsilon and of the fixed-dimension d=3 expansions.

The 3-D O(4) universality class and the phase transition in two-flavor QCD

We determine the critical equation of state of the three-dimensional O(4) universality class. We first consider the small-field expansion of the effective potential (Helmholtz free energy). Then, we apply a systematic approximation scheme based on polynomial parametric representations that are valid in the whole critical regime, satisfy the correct analytic properties (Griffiths' analyticity), take into account the Goldstone singularities at the coexistence curve, and match the small-field expansion of the effective potential. From the approximate representations of the equation of state, we obtain estimates of several universal amplitude ratios. The three-dimensional O(4) universality class is expected to describe the finite-temperature chiral transition of quantum chromodynamics with two light flavors. Within this picture, the O(4) critical equation of state relates the reduced temperature, the quark masses, and the condensates around T_c in the limit of vanishing quark masses.

Third-harmonic exponent in three-dimensional N-vector models

We compute the crossover exponent associated with the spin-3 operator in three-dimensional O(N) models. A six-loop field-theoretical calculation in the fixed-dimension approach gives $ϕ_3 = 0.601(10)$ for the experimentally relevant case N=2 (XY model). The corresponding exponent $β_3 = 1.413(10)$ is compared with the experimental estimates obtained in materials undergoing a normal-incommensurate structural transition and in liquid crystals at the smectic-A--hexatic-B phase transition, finding good agreement.

Randomly dilute spin models with cubic symmetry

We study the combined effect of cubic anisotropy and quenched uncorrelated impurities on multicomponent spin models. For this purpose, we consider the field-theoretical approach based on the Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson $ϕ^4$ Hamiltonian with cubic-symmetric quartic interactions and quenched randomness coupled to the local energy density. We compute the renormalization-group functions to six loops in the fixed-dimension (d=3) perturbative scheme. The analysis of such high-order series provides an accurate description of the renormalization-group flow. The results are also used to determine the critical behavior of three-dimensional antiferromagnetic three- and four-state Potts models in the presence of quenched impurities.

Field-theory results for three-dimensional transitions with complex symmetries

We discuss several examples of three-dimensional critical phenomena that can be described by Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson $ϕ^4$ theories. We present an overview of field-theoretical results obtained from the analysis of high-order perturbative series in the frameworks of the $ε$ and of the fixed-dimension d=3 expansions. In particular, we discuss the stability of the O(N)-symmetric fixed point in a generic N-component theory, the critical behaviors of randomly dilute Ising-like systems and frustrated spin systems with noncollinear order, the multicritical behavior arising from the competition of two distinct types of ordering with symmetry O($n_1$) and O($n_2$) respectively.

Multicritical phenomena in O(n_1)+O(n_2)-symmetric theories

We study the multicritical behavior arising from the competition of two distinct types of ordering characterized by O(n) symmetries. For this purpose, we consider the renormalization-group flow for the most general $O(n_1)\oplus O(n_2)$-symmetric Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian involving two fields $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$ with $n_1$ and $n_2$ components respectively. In particular, we determine in which cases, approaching the multicritical point, one may observe the asymptotic enlargement of the symmetry to O(N) with N=n_1+n_2. By performing a five-loop $ε$-expansion computation we determine the fixed points and their stability. It turns out that for N=n_1+n_2\ge 3 the O(N)-symmetric fixed point is unstable. For N=3, the multicritical behavior is described by the biconal fixed point with critical exponents that are very close to the Heisenberg ones. For N\ge 4 and any n_1,n_2 the critical behavior is controlled by the tetracritical decoupled fixed point. We discuss the relevance of these results for some physically interesting systems, in particular for anisotropic antiferromagnets in the presence of a magnetic field and for high-T_c superconductors. Concerning the SO(5) theory of superconductivity, we show that the bicritical O(5) fixed point is unstable with a significant crossover exponent, $ϕ_{4,4}\approx 0.15$; this implies that the O(5) symmetry is not effectively realized at the point where the antiferromagnetic and superconducting transition lines meet. The multicritical behavior is either governed by the tetracritical decoupled fixed point or is of first-order type if the system is outside its attraction domain.

Theta dependence of SU(N) gauge theories

We study the $θ$ dependence of four-dimensional SU($N$) gauge theories, for $N\geq 3$ and in the large-N limit. We use numerical simulations of the Wilson lattice formulation of gauge theories to compute the first few terms of the expansion of the ground-state energy $F(θ)$ around $θ=0$, $F(θ)-F(0) = A_2 θ^2 (1 + b_2 θ^2 + ...)$. Our results support Witten's conjecture: $F(θ)-F(0) = {\cal A} θ^2 + O(1/N)$ for sufficiently small values of $θ$, $θ< π$. Indeed we verify that the topological susceptibility has a nonzero large-N limit $χ_\infty=2 {\cal A}$ with corrections of $O(1/N^2)$, in substantial agreement with the Witten-Veneziano formula which relates $χ_\infty$ to the $η^\prime$ mass. Furthermore, higher order terms in $θ$ are suppressed; in particular, the $O(θ^4)$ term $b_2$ (related to the $η^\prime - η^\prime$ elastic scattering amplitude) turns out to be quite small: $b_2=-0.023(7)$ for N=3, and its absolute value decreases with increasing $N$, consistently with the expectation $b_2=O(1/N^2)$.

Critical Phenomena and Renormalization-Group Theory

We review results concerning the critical behavior of spin systems at equilibrium. We consider the Ising and the general O($N$)-symmetric universality classes, including the $N\to 0$ limit that describes the critical behavior of self-avoiding walks. For each of them, we review the estimates of the critical exponents, of the equation of state, of several amplitude ratios, and of the two-point function of the order parameter. We report results in three and two dimensions. We discuss the crossover phenomena that are observed in this class of systems. In particular, we review the field-theoretical and numerical studies of systems with medium-range interactions. Moreover, we consider several examples of magnetic and structural phase transitions, which are described by more complex Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonians, such as $N$-component systems with cubic anisotropy, O($N$)-symmetric systems in the presence of quenched disorder, frustrated spin systems with noncollinear or canted order, and finally, a class of systems described by the tetragonal Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian with three quartic couplings. The results for the tetragonal Hamiltonian are original, in particular we present the six-loop perturbative series for the $β$-functions. Finally, we consider a Hamiltonian with symmetry $O(n_1)\oplus O(n_2)$ that is relevant for the description of multicritical phenomena.

Spectrum of confining strings in SU(N) gauge theories

We study the spectrum of the confining strings in four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories. We compute, for the SU(4) and SU(6) gauge theories formulated on a lattice, the string tensions sigma_k related to sources with Z_N charge k, using Monte Carlo simulations. Our results are consistent with the sine formula sigma_k/sigma = sin k pi/N / sin pi/N for the ratio between sigma_k and the standard string tension sigma. For the SU(4) and SU(6) cases the accuracy is approximately 1% and 2%, respectively. The sine formula is known to emerge in various realizations of supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theories. On the other hand, our results show deviations from Casimir scaling. We also discuss an analogous behavior exhibited by two-dimensional SU(N) x SU(N) chiral models.

Comment on ``Bicritical and Tetracritical Phenomena and Scaling Properties of the SO(5) Theory,'' [X. Hu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 057004 (2001)]

We show that, in the most general $N$-component theory with symmetry O(n_1)+O(n_2), N=n_1+n_2\geq 3, the O(N)-symmetric fixed point has (at least) three unstable directions: the temperature, the quadratic anisotropy, and the spin-4 quartic perturbation. This implies that in the SO(5) theory of high-$T_c$ superconductivity an additional tuning is required to obtain an enlarged SO(5) symmetry. This is in contrast with the recent numerical results reported by Hu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 057004 (2001). \

Twisted Eguchi-Kawai Reduced Chiral Models

We study the twisted Eguchi-Kawai (TEK) reduction procedure for large-N unitary matrix lattice models. In particular, we consider the case of two-dimensional principal chiral models, and use numerical Monte Carlo (MC) simulations to check the conjectured equivalence of TEK reduced model and standard lattice model in the large-N limit. The MC results are compared with the large-N limit of lattice principal chiral models to verify the supposed equivalence. The consistency of the TEK reduction procedure is verified in the strong-coupling region, i.e. for $β<β_c$ where $β_c$ is the location of the large-N phase transition. On the other hand, in the weak-coupling regime $β>β_c$, relevant for the continuum limit, our MC results do not support the equivalence of the large-N limits of the lattice chiral model and the corresponding TEK reduction. The implications for the correspondence between TEK model and noncommutative field theory are also discussed.

Critical structure factor in Ising systems

We perform a large-scale Monte Carlo simulation of the three-dimensional Ising model on simple cubic lattices of size L^3 with L=128 and 256. We determine the corresponding structure factor (Fourier transform of the two-point function) and compare it with several approximations and with experimental results. We also compute the turbidity as a function of the momentum of the incoming radiation, focusing in particular on the deviations from the Ornstein-Zernicke expression of Puglielli and Ford.

25th-order high-temperature expansion results for three-dimensional Ising-like systems on the simple cubic lattice

25th-order high-temperature series are computed for a general nearest-neighbor three-dimensional Ising model with arbitrary potential on the simple cubic lattice. In particular, we consider three improved potentials characterized by suppressed leading scaling corrections. Critical exponents are extracted from high-temperature series specialized to improved potentials, obtaining $γ=1.2373(2)$, $ν=0.63012(16)$, $α=0.1096(5)$, $η=0.03639(15)$, $β=0.32653(10)$, $δ=4.7893(8)$. Moreover, biased analyses of the 25th-order series of the standard Ising model provide the estimate $Δ=0.52(3)$ for the exponent associated with the leading scaling corrections. By the same technique, we study the small-magnetization expansion of the Helmholtz free energy. The results are then applied to the construction of parametric representations of the critical equation of state, using a systematic approach based on a global stationarity condition. Accurate estimates of several universal amplitude ratios are also presented.
