Finite-size scaling at quantum transitions

We develop the finite-size scaling (FSS) theory at quantum transitions, considering generic boundary conditions, such as open and periodic boundary conditions, and also the corrections to the leading FSS behaviors. Using renormalization-group (RG) theory, we generalize Wegner's scaling Ansatz to the quantum case, classifying the different sources of scaling corrections. We identify nonanalytic corrections due to irrelevant (bulk and boundary) RG perturbations and analytic contributions due to regular backgrounds and analytic expansions of the nonlinear scaling fields. To check the general predictions, we consider the quantum XY chain in a transverse field. For this model exact or numerically accurate results can be obtained by exploiting its fermionic quadratic representation. We study the FSS of several observables, such as the free energy, the energy differences between low-energy levels, correlation functions of the order parameter, etc., confirming the general predictions in all cases. Moreover, we consider bipartite entanglement entropies, which are characterized by the presence of additional scaling corrections, as predicted by conformal field theory.

Theta dependence of 4D SU(N) gauge theories at finite temperature

We report a study of the dependence of 4D SU(N) gauge theories on the topological theta term at finite temperature, and in particular in the large-N limit. We show that the theta dependence drastically changes across the deconfinement transition. The low-temperature phase is characterized by a large-N scaling with theta/N as relevant variable, while in the high-temperature phase the free energy is essentially determined by the dilute instanton-gas approximation, with a simple theta dependence of the free-energy density proportional to 1-Cos(theta).

Critical parameters from trap-size scaling in trapped particle systems

We investigate the critical behavior of trapped particle systems at the low-temperature superfluid transition. In particular, we consider the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of a trapping harmonic potential coupled with the particle density, which is a realistic model of cold bosonic atoms in optical lattices. We present a numerical study based on quantum Monte Carlo simulations, analyzed in the framework of the trap-size scaling (TSS). We show how the critical parameters can be derived from the trap-size dependences of appropriate observables, matching them with TSS. This provides a systematic scheme which is supposed to exactly converge to the critical parameters of the transition in the large trap-size limit. Our numerical analysis may provide a guide for experimental investigations of trapped systems at finite-temperature and quantum transitions, showing how critical parameters may be determined by looking at the scaling of the critical modes with respect to the trap size, i.e. by matching the trap-size dependence of the experimental data with the expected TSS Ansatz.

Change of theta dependence in 4D SU(N) gauge theories across the deconfinement transition

We investigate the dependence of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories on the topological theta term at finite temperature and, in particular, across the deconfinement transition. For this purpose, we exploit the lattice formulation of the theory and present numerical results for the expansion of the free energy up to O(theta^6), for N=3 and N=6. Our numerical analysis shows that the theta dependence of 4D SU(N) gauge theory experiences a drastic change across the deconfinement transition: the low-temperature phase is characterized by a large-N scaling with theta/N as relevant variable, while in the high-temperature phase the scaling variable is just theta and the free energy is essentially determined by the instanton-gas approximation. The crossover between the two different behaviours gets sharper with increasing N, suggesting that the instanton-gas regime sets in just above Tc at large N.

Equilibrium and nonequilibrium entanglement properties of 2D and 3D Fermi gases

We investigate the entanglement properties of the equilibrium and nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of 2D and 3D Fermi gases, by computing entanglement entropies of extended space regions, which generally show multiplicative logarithmic corrections to the leading power-law behaviors, corresponding to the logarithmic corrections to the area law. We consider 2D and 3D Fermi gases of N particles constrained within a limited space region, for example by a hard-wall trap, at equilibrium at T=0, i.e. in their ground state, and compute the first few terms of the asymptotic large-N behaviors of entanglement entropies and particle fluctuations of subsystems with some convenient geometries, which allow us to significantly extend their computation. Then, we consider their nonequilibrium dynamics after instantaneously dropping the hard-wall trap, which allows the gas to expand freely. We compute the time dependence of the von Neumann entanglement entropy of space regions around the original trap. We show that at small time it is characterized by the relation $S \approx π^2 V/3$ with the particle variance, and multiplicative logarithmic corrections to the leading power law, i.e. $S \sim t^{1-d}\ln(1/t)$.

Theta dependence of SU(N) gauge theories in the presence of a topological term

We review results concerning the theta dependence of 4D SU(N) gauge theories and QCD, where theta is the coefficient of the CP-violating topological term in the Lagrangian. In particular, we discuss theta dependence in the large-N limit. Most results have been obtained within the lattice formulation of the theory via numerical simulations, which allow to investigate the theta dependence of the ground-state energy and the spectrum around theta=0 by determining the moments of the topological charge distribution, and their correlations with other observables. We discuss the various methods which have been employed to determine the topological susceptibility, and higher-order terms of the theta expansion. We review results at zero and finite temperature. We show that the results support the scenario obtained by general large-N scaling arguments, and in particular the Witten-Veneziano mechanism to explain the U(1)_A problem. We also compare with results obtained by other approaches, especially in the large-N limit, where the issue has been also addressed using, for example, the AdS/CFT correspondence. We discuss issues related to theta dependence in full QCD: the neutron electric dipole moment, the dependence of the topological susceptibility on the quark masses, the U(1)_A symmetry breaking at finite temperature. We also consider the 2D CP(N) model, which is an interesting theoretical laboratory to study issues related to topology. We review analytical results in the large-N limit, and numerical results within its lattice formulation. Finally, we discuss the main features of the two-point correlation function of the topological charge density.

Renormalization-group flow and asymptotic behaviors at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions

We investigate the general features of the renormalization-group flow at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, providing a thorough quantitative description of the asymptotc critical behavior, including the multiplicative and subleading logarithmic corrections. For this purpose, we consider the RG flow of the sine-Gordon model around the renormalizable point which describes the BKT transition. We reduce the corresponding beta-functions to a universal canonical form, valid to all perturbative orders. Then, we determine the asymptotic solutions of the RG equations in various critical regimes: the infinite-volume critical behavior in the disordered phase, the finite-size scaling limit for homogeneous systems of finite size, and the trap-size scaling limit occurring in 2D bosonic particle systems trapped by an external space-dependent potential.

Quantum dynamics and entanglement of a 1D Fermi gas released from a trap

We investigate the entanglement properties of the nonequilibrium dynamics of one-dimensional noninteracting Fermi gases released from a trap. The gas of N particles is initially in the ground state within hard-wall or harmonic traps, then it expands after dropping the trap. We compute the time dependence of the von Neumann and Renyi entanglement entropies and the particle fluctuations of spatial intervals around the original trap, in the limit of a large number N of particles. The results for these observables apply to one-dimensional gases of impenetrable bosons as well. We identify different dynamical regimes at small and large times, depending also on the initial condition, whether it is that of a hard-wall or harmonic trap. In particular, we analytically show that the expansion from hard-wall traps is characterized by the asymptotic small-time behavior $S \approx (1/3)\ln(1/t)$ of the von Neumann entanglement entropy, and the relation $S\approx π^2 V/3$ where V is the particle variance, which are analogous to the equilibrium behaviors whose leading logarithms are essentially determined by the corresponding conformal field theory with central charge $c=1$. The time dependence of the entanglement entropy of extended regions during the expansion from harmonic traps shows the remarkable property that it can be expressed as a global time-dependent rescaling of the space dependence of the initial equilibrium entanglement entropy.

Exact relations between particle fluctuations and entanglement in Fermi gases

We derive exact relations between the Renyi entanglement entropies and the particle number fluctuations of spatial connected regions in systems of N noninteracting fermions in arbitrary dimension. We prove that the asymptotic large-N behavior of the entanglement entropies is proportional to the variance of the particle number. We also consider 1D Fermi gases with a localized impurity, where all particle cumulants contribute to the asymptotic large-N behavior of the entanglement entropies. The particle cumulant expansion turns out to be convergent for all integer-order Renyi entropies (except for the von Neumann entropy) and the first few cumulants provide already a good approximation. Since the particle cumulants are accessible to experiments, these relations may provide a measure of entanglement in these systems.

Entanglement and particle correlations of Fermi gases in harmonic traps

We investigate quantum correlations in the ground state of noninteracting Fermi gases of N particles trapped by an external space-dependent harmonic potential, in any dimension. For this purpose, we compute one-particle correlations, particle fluctuations and bipartite entanglement entropies of extended space regions, and study their large-N scaling behaviors. The half-space von Neumann entanglement entropy is computed for any dimension, obtaining S_HS = c_l N^(d-1)/d ln N, analogously to homogenous systems, with c_l=1/6, 1/(6\sqrt{2}), 1/(6\sqrt{6}) in one, two and three dimensions respectively. We show that the asymptotic large-N relation S_A\approx π^2 V_A/3, between the von Neumann entanglement entropy S_A and particle variance V_A of an extended space region A, holds for any subsystem A and in any dimension, analogously to homogeneous noninteracting Fermi gases.

Entanglement Entropy of Quantum Wire Junctions

We consider a fermion gas on a star graph modeling a quantum wire junction and derive the entanglement entropy of one edge with respect to the rest of the junction. The gas is free in the bulk of the graph, the interaction being localized in its vertex and described by a non-trivial scattering matrix. We discuss all point-like interactions, which lead to unitary time evolution of the system. We show that for a finite number of particles N, the Renyi entanglement entropies of one edge grow as ln N with a calculable prefactor, which depends not only on the central charge, but also on the total transmission probability from the considered edge to the rest of the graph. This result is extended to the case with an harmonic potential in the bulk.

Simulating a CP-violating topological term in gauge theories

We present recent results on the theta-dependence of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories, where theta is the coefficient of the CP-violating topological term in the Lagrangian. In particular, we study the scaling behavior of these theories, by Monte Carlo simulations at imaginary theta. The numerical results provide good evidence of scaling in the continuum limit. The imaginary theta dependence of the ground-state energy turns out to be well described by the first few terms of related expansions around theta=0, providing accurate estimates of the first few coefficients, up to O(theta^6).

Finite-size scaling in two-dimensional Ising spin glass models

We study the finite-size behavior of two-dimensional spin-glass models. We consider the +-J model for two different values of the probability of the antiferromagnetic bonds and the model with Gaussian distributed couplings. The analysis of renormalization-group invariant quantities, the overlap susceptibility, and the two-point correlation function confirms that they belong to the same universality class. We analyze in detail the standard finite-size scaling limit in terms of TL^(1/nu) in the +-J model. We find that it holds asymptotically. This result is consistent with the low-temperature crossover scenario in which the crossover temperature, which separates the universal high-temperature region from the discrete low-temperature regime, scales as T_c(L) ~ L^(-theta_S) with theta_S \approx 0.5.

Entanglement entropies in free fermion gases for arbitrary dimension

We study the entanglement entropy of connected bipartitions in free fermion gases of N particles in arbitrary dimension d. We show that the von Neumann and Renyi entanglement entropies grow asymptotically as N^(1-1/d) ln N, with a prefactor that is analytically computed using the Widom conjecture both for periodic and open boundary conditions. The logarithmic correction to the power-law behavior is related to the area-law violation in lattice free fermions. These asymptotic large-N behaviors are checked against exact numerical calculations for N-particle systems.

We study the scaling behavior of the 4D SU(3) lattice gauge theory in the presence of a theta term, by Monte Carlo simulations computing the topological properties at imaginary theta. The numerical results provide a good evidence of scaling in the continuum limit. The imaginary theta dependence of the ground-state energy turns out to be well described by the first few terms of related expansions around theta=0, providing accurate estimates of the first few coefficients, up to O(theta^6).

The entanglement entropy of 1D systems in continuous and homogenous space

We introduce a systematic framework to calculate the bipartite entanglement entropy of a compact spatial subsystem in a one-dimensional quantum gas which can be mapped into a noninteracting fermion system. We show that when working with a finite number of particles N, the Renyi entanglement entropies grow as log N, with a prefactor that is given by the central charge. We apply this novel technique to the ground state and to excited states of periodic systems. We also consider systems with boundaries. We derive universal formulas for the leading behavior and for subleading corrections to the scaling. The universality of the results allows us to make predictions for the finite-size scaling forms of the corrections to the scaling.

Interplay between temperature and trap effects in one-dimensional lattice systems of bosonic particles

We investigate the interplay of temperature and trap effects in cold particle systems at their quantum critical regime, such as cold bosonic atoms in optical lattices at the transitions between Mott-insulator and superfluid phases. The theoretical framework is provided by the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of an external trapping potential, and the trap-size scaling theory describing the large trap-size behavior at a quantum critical point. We present numerical results for the low-temperature behavior of the particle density and the density-density correlation function at the Mott transitions, and within the gapless superfluid phase.

Anisotropic perturbations in three-dimensional O(N)-symmetric vector models

We investigate the effects of anisotropic perturbations in three-dimensional O(N)-symmetric vector models. In order to assess their relevance for the critical behavior, we determine the renormalization-group dimensions of the anisotropic perturbations associated with the first few spin values of the representations of the O(N) group, because the lowest spin values give rise to the most important effects. In particular, we determine them up to spin 4 for N=2,3,4, by finite-size analyses of Monte Carlo simulations of lattice O(N) models, achieving a significant improvement of their accuracy. These results are relevant for several physical systems, such as density-wave systems, magnets with cubic symmetry, and multicritical phenomena arising from the competition of different order parameters.
