Orbit classification and networks of periodic orbits in the planar circular restricted five-body problem

The aim of this paper is to numerically investigate the orbital dynamics of the circular planar restricted problem of five bodies. By numerically integrating several large sets of initial conditions of orbits we classify them into three main categories: (i) bounded (regular or chaotic) (ii) escaping and (iii) close encounter orbits. In addition, we determine the influence of the mass parameter on the orbital structure of the system, on the degree of fractality, as well as on the families of symmetric and non-symmetric periodic orbits. The networks and the linear stability of both symmetric and non-symmetric periodic orbits are revealed, while the corresponding critical periodic solutions are also identified. The parametric evolution of the horizontal and the vertical linear stability of the periodic orbits is also monitored, as a function of the mass parameter.

Near-optimal capture in the planar circular restricted Pluto-Charon system

In this paper, the near-optimal capture problem is numerically investigated to locate the optimal capture points around Charon using the Pluto-Charon planar circular restricted three-body problem (PCRTBP). Capture orbits are divided into the pre- and post-maneuver portions. In the pre-maneuver portion, the gravitational capture conditions are discussed by backward numerical integration. In the post-maneuver portion, the smaller alignment index (SALI) is applied to numerically investigate the orbital characters of long-term capture orbits around Charon. The initial conditions corresponding to three types of motion: (i) bounded (regular or chaotic), (ii) escaping and (iii) collisional are classified and studied. Combining results of the pre- and post-maneuver portions, the near-optimal capture method is presented to find optimal capture points by overlay figures, and then the corresponding capture orbits are constructed in the PCRTBP. The different results between the Pluto-Charon system and the Earth-Moon system are compared and analyzed. Our results obtained in this paper, including the optimal capture points and the corresponding capture orbits, could be applied in future space mission design.

Comparing the geometry of the basins of attraction, the speed and the efficiency of several numerical methods

We use simple equations in order to compare the basins of attraction on the complex plane, corresponding to a large collection of numerical methods, of several order. Two cases are considered, regarding the total number of the roots, which act as numerical attractors. For both cases we use the iterative schemes for performing a thorough and systematic classification of the nodes on the complex plane. The distributions of the required iterations as well as the probability and their correlations with the corresponding basins of convergence are also discussed. Our numerical calculations suggest that most of the iterative schemes provide relatively similar convergence structures on the complex plane. In addition, several aspects of the numerical methods are compared in an attempt to obtain general conclusions regarding their speed and efficiency. Moreover, we try to determine how the complexity of the each case influences the main characteristics of the numerical methods.

Revealing the Newton-Raphson basins of convergence in the circular pseudo-Newtonian Sitnikov problem

In this paper we numerically explore the convergence properties of the pseudo-Newtonian circular restricted problem of three and four primary bodies. The classical Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is used for revealing the basins of convergence and their respective fractal basin boundaries on the complex plane. A thorough and systematic analysis is conducted in an attempt to determine the influence of the transition parameter on the convergence properties of the system. Additionally, the roots (numerical attractors) of the system and the basin entropy of the convergence diagrams are monitored as a function of the transition parameter, thus allowing us to extract useful conclusions. The probability distributions, as well as the distributions of the required number of iterations are also correlated with the corresponding basins of convergence.

Orbit classification in an equal-mass non-spinning binary black hole pseudo-Newtonian system

The dynamics of a test particle in a non-spinning binary black hole system of equal masses is numerically investigated. The binary system is modeled in the context of the pseudo-Newtonian circular restricted three-body problem, such that the primaries are separated by a fixed distance and move in a circular orbit around each other. In particular, the Paczyński-Wiita potential is used for describing the gravitational field of the two non-Newtonian primaries. The orbital properties of the test particle are determined through the classification of the initial conditions of the orbits, using several values of the Jacobi constant, in the Hill's regions of possible motion. The initial conditions are classified into three main categories: (i) bounded, (ii) escaping and (iii) displaying close encounters. Using the smaller alignment index (SALI) chaos indicator, we further classify bounded orbits into regular, sticky or chaotic. To gain a complete view of the dynamics of the system, we define grids of initial conditions on different types of two-dimensional planes. The orbital structure of the configuration plane, along with the corresponding distributions of the escape and collision/close encounter times, allow us to observe the transition from the classical Newtonian to the pseudo-Newtonian regime. Our numerical results reveal a strong dependence of the properties of the considered basins with the Jacobi constant as well as with the Schwarzschild radius of the black holes.

Fractal basins of convergence of libration points in the planar Copenhagen problem with a repulsive quasi-homogeneous Manev-type potential

The Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, corresponding to the coplanar libration points (which act as attractors), are unveiled in the Copenhagen problem, where instead of the Newtonian potential and forces, a quasi-homogeneous potential created by two primaries is considered. The multivariate version of the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is used to reveal the attracting domain associated with the libration points on various type of two-dimensional configuration planes. The correlations between the basins of convergence and the corresponding required number of iterations are also presented and discussed in detail. The present numerical analysis reveals that the evolution of the attracting domains in this dynamical system is very complicated, however, it is a worth studying issue.

Investigating the basins of convergence in the circular Sitnikov three-body problem with non-spherical primaries

In this work we numerically explore the Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, related to the equilibrium points, in the Sitnikov three-body problem with non-spherical primaries. The evolution of the position of the roots is determined, as a function of the value of the oblateness coefficient. The attracting regions, on several types of two dimensional planes, are revealed by using the classical Newton-Raphson iterative method. We perform a systematic and thorough investigation in an attempt to understand how the oblateness coefficient affects the geometry as well as the overall properties of the convergence regions. The basins of convergence are also related with the required number of iterations and also with the corresponding probability distributions.

Comparing the basins of attraction for several methods in the circular Sitnikov problem with spheroid primaries

The circular Sitnikov problem, where the two primary bodies are prolate or oblate spheroids, is numerically investigated. In particular, the basins of convergence on the complex plane are revealed by using a large collection of numerical methods of several order. We consider four cases, regarding the value of the oblateness coefficient which determines the nature of the roots (attractors) of the system. For all cases we use the iterative schemes for performing a thorough and systematic classification of the nodes on the complex plane. The distribution of the iterations as well as the probability and their correlations with the corresponding basins of convergence are also discussed. Our numerical computations indicate that most of the iterative schemes provide relatively similar convergence structures on the complex plane. However, there are some numerical methods for which the corresponding basins of attraction are extremely complicated with highly fractal basin boundaries. Moreover, it is proved that the efficiency strongly varies between the numerical methods.

On the Newton-Raphson basins of convergence of the out-of-plane equilibrium points in the Copenhagen problem with oblate primaries

The Copenhagen case of the circular restricted three-body problem with oblate primary bodies is numerically investigated by exploring the Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, related to the out-of-plane equilibrium points. The evolution of the position of the libration points is determined, as a function of the value of the oblateness coefficient. The attracting regions, on several types of two-dimensional planes, are revealed by using the multivariate Newton-Raphson iterative method. We perform a systematic and thorough investigation in an attempt to understand how the oblateness coefficient affects the geometry of the basins of convergence. The convergence regions are also related with the required number of iterations and also with the corresponding probability distributions. The degree of the fractality is also determined by calculating the fractal dimension and the basin entropy of the convergence planes.

We perform a systematic and thorough analysis in an attempt to understand how the oblateness coefficient affects the geometry as well as the basin entropy of the convergence regions. The convergence areas are related with the required number of iterations and also with the corresponding probability distributions.

Investigating the Newton-Raphson basins of attraction in the restricted three-body problem with modified Newtonian gravity

The planar circular restricted three-body problem with modified Newtonian gravity is used in order to determine the Newton-Raphson basins of attraction associated with the equilibrium points. The evolution of the position of the five Lagrange points is monitored when the value of the power $p$ of the gravitational potential of the second primary varies in predefined intervals. The regions on the configuration $(x,y)$ plane occupied by the basins of attraction are revealed using the multivariate version of the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme. The correlations between the basins of convergence of the equilibrium points and the corresponding number of iterations needed for obtaining the desired accuracy are also illustrated. We conduct a thorough and systematic numerical investigation by demonstrating how the dynamical quantity $p$ influences the shape as well as the geometry of the basins of attractions. Our results strongly suggest that the power $p$ is indeed a very influential parameter in both cases of weaker or stronger Newtonian gravity.

Correlating the escape dynamics and the role of the normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds in a binary system of dwarf spheroidal galaxies

We elucidate the escape properties of stars moving in the combined gravitational field of a binary system of two interacting dwarf spheroidal galaxies. A galaxy model of three degrees of freedom is adopted for describing the dynamical properties of the Hamiltonian system. All the numerical values of the involved parameters are chosen having in mind the real binary system of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies NGC 147 and NGC 185. We distinguish between bounded (regular, sticky or chaotic) and escaping motion by classifying initial conditions of orbits in several types of two dimensional planes, considering only unbounded motion for several energy levels. We analyze the orbital structure of all types of two dimensional planes of initial conditions by locating the basins of escape and also by measuring the corresponding escape time of the orbits. Furthermore, the properties of the normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds (NHIMs), located in the vicinity of the index-1 saddle points $L_1$, $L_2$, and $L_3$, are also investigated. These manifolds are of great importance, as they control the flow of stars (between the two galaxies and toward the exterior region) over the different saddle points. In addition, bifurcation diagrams of the Lyapunov periodic orbits as well as restrictions of the Poincaré map to the NHIMs are presented for revealing the dynamics in the neighbourhood of the saddle points. Comparison between the current outcomes and previous related results is also made.

Basins of convergence of equilibrium points in the generalized Henon-Heiles system

We numerically explore the Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, related to the libration points (which act as attractors of the convergence process), in the generalized Hénon-Heiles system (GHH). The evolution of the position as well as of the linear stability of the equilibrium points is determined, as a function of the value of the perturbation parameter. The attracting regions, on the configuration $(x,y)$ plane, are revealed by using the multivariate version of the classical Newton-Raphson iterative algorithm. We perform a systematic investigation in an attempt to understand how the perturbation parameter affects the geometry as well as of the basin entropy of the attracting domains. The convergence regions are also related with the required number of iterations.

Orbital dynamics in the post-Newtonian planar circular Sun-Jupiter system

The theory of the post-Newtonian (PN) planar circular restricted three-body problem is used for numerically investigating the orbital dynamics of a test particle (e.g., a comet, asteroid, meteor or spacecraft) in the planar Sun-Jupiter system with a scattering region around Jupiter. For determining the orbital properties of the test particle, we classify large sets of initial conditions of orbits for several values of the Jacobi constant in all possible Hill region configurations. The initial conditions are classified into three main categories: (i) bounded, (ii) escaping and (iii) collisional. Using the smaller alignment index chaos indicator (SALI), we further classify bounded orbits into regular, sticky or chaotic. In order to get a spherical view of the dynamics of the system, the grids of the initial conditions of the orbits are defined on different types of two-dimensional planes. We locate the different types of basins and we also relate them with the corresponding spatial distributions of the escape and collision time. Our thorough analysis exposes the high complexity of the orbital dynamics and exhibits an appreciable difference between the final states of the orbits in the classical and PN approaches. Furthermore, our numerical results reveal a strong dependence of the properties of the considered basins with the Jacobi constant, along with a remarkable presence of fractal basin boundaries. Our outcomes are compared with earlier ones, regarding other planetary systems.

Dynamical analysis of bounded and unbounded orbits in a generalized Hénon-Heiles system

The Hénon-Heiles potential was first proposed as a simplified version of the gravitational potential experimented by a star in the presence of a galactic center. Currently, this system is considered a paradigm in dynamical systems because despite its simplicity exhibits a very complex dynamical behavior. In the present paper, we perform a series expansion up to the fifth-order of a potential with axial and reflection symmetries, which after some transformations, leads to a generalized Hénon-Heiles potential. Such new system is analyzed qualitatively in both regimes of bounded and unbounded motion via the Poincaré sections method and plotting the exit basins. On the other hand, the quantitative analysis is performed through the Lyapunov exponents and the basin entropy, respectively. We find that in both regimes the chaoticity of the system decreases as long as the test particle energy gets far from the critical energy. Additionally, we may conclude that despite the inclusion of higher order terms in the series expansion, the new system shows wider zones of regularity (islands) than the ones present in the Hénon-Heiles system.

Orbital and escape dynamics in barred galaxies - III. The 3D system: Correlations between the basins of escape and the NHIMs

The escape dynamics of the stars in a barred galaxy composed of a spherically symmetric central nucleus, a bar, a flat thin disk and a dark matter halo component is investigated by using a realistic three degrees of freedom (3-dof) dynamical model. Modern colour-coded diagrams are used for distinguishing between bounded and escaping motion. In addition, the smaller alignment index (SALI) method is deployed for determining the regular, sticky or chaotic nature of bounded orbits. We reveal the basins of escape corresponding to the escape through the two symmetrical escape channels around the Lagrange points $L_2$ and $L_3$ and also we relate them with the corresponding distribution of the escape times of the orbits. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the stable manifolds, around the index-1 saddle points, accurately define the fractal basin boundaries observed in the colour-coded diagrams. The development scenario of the fundamental vertical Lyapunov periodic orbit is thoroughly explored for obtaining a more complete view of the unfolding of the singular behaviour of the dynamics at the cusp values of the parameters. Finally, we examine how the combination of the most important parameters of the bar (such as the semi-major axis and the angular velocity) influences the observed stellar structures (rings and spirals) which are formed by escaping stars guided by the invariant manifolds near the saddle points.

Basins of convergence of equilibrium points in the generalized Hill problem

The Newton-Raphson basins of attraction, associated with the libration points (attractors), are revealed in the generalized Hill problem. The parametric variation of the position and the linear stability of the equilibrium points is determined, when the value of the perturbation parameter $ε$ varies. The multivariate Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is used to determine the attracting domains on several types of two-dimensional planes. A systematic and thorough numerical investigation is performed in order to demonstrate the influence of the perturbation parameter on the geometry as well as of the basin entropy of the basins of convergence. The correlations between the basins of attraction and the corresponding required number of iterations are also illustrated and discussed. Our numerical analysis strongly indicates that the evolution of the attracting regions in this dynamical system is an extremely complicated yet very interesting issue.
