A non-Abelian Chern-Simons--Yang-Mills-Higgs system in 3+1 dimensions

We study spherically symmetric solutions of an $SO(5)$ Chern-Simons--Yang-Mills-Higgs system in $3+1$ dimensions. The Chern-Simons densities are defined in terms of both Yang-Mills fields and a $5$-component isomultiplet Higgs. The $SO(3)\times{SO(2)}$ solutions are analysed in a systematic way, by employing numerical methods. These finite energy configurations possess both electric and magnetic global charges, differing radically, however, from Julia-Zee dyons. When two or more of these Chern-Simons densities are present in the Lagrangian, solutions with vanishing electric charge but nonvanishing electrostatic potential may exist.

Ergo-spheres, ergo-tori and ergo-Saturns for Kerr black holes with scalar hair

We have recently reported (arXiv:1403.2757) the existence of Kerr black holes with scalar hair in General Relativity minimally coupled to a massive, complex scalar field. These solutions interpolate between boson stars and Kerr black holes. The latter have a well known topologically S^2 ergo-surface (ergo-sphere) whereas the former develop a S^1*S^1 ergo-surface (ergo-torus) in a region of parameter space. We show that hairy black holes always have an ergo-region, and that this region is delimited by either an ergo-sphere or an ergo-Saturn -- i.e. a S^2\oplus (S^1*S^1) ergo-surface. In the phase space of solutions, the ergo-torus can either appear disconnected from the ergo-sphere or pinch off from it. We provide a heuristic argument, based on a measure of the size of the ergo-region, that superradiant instabilities - which are likely to be present - are weaker for hairy black holes than for Kerr black holes with the same global charges. We observe that Saturn-like, and even more remarkable ergo-surfaces, should also arise for other rotating `hairy' black holes.

Kerr black holes with scalar hair

We present a family of solutions of Einstein's gravity minimally coupled to a complex, massive scalar field, describing asymptotically flat, spinning black holes with scalar hair and a regular horizon. These hairy black holes (HBHs) are supported by rotation and have no static limit. Besides mass M and angular momentum J, they carry a conserved, continuous Noether charge Q measuring the scalar hair. HBHs branch off from the Kerr metric at the threshold of the superradiant instability and reduce to spinning boson stars in the limit of vanishing horizon area. They overlap with Kerr black holes for a set of (M,J) values. A single Killing vector field preserves the solutions, tangent to the null geodesic generators of the event horizon. HBHs can exhibit sharp physical differences when compared to the Kerr solution, such as J/M^2>1, quadrupole moment larger than J^2/M and larger orbital angular velocity at the innermost stable circular orbit. Families of HBHs connected to the Kerr geometry should exist in scalar (and other) models with more general self interactions.

A new spin on black hole hair

We show that scalar hair can be added to rotating, vacuum black holes of general relativity. These hairy black holes (HBHs) clarify a lingering question concerning gravitational solitons: if a black hole can be added at the centre of a boson star, as it typically can for other solitons. We argue that it can, but only if it is spinning. The existence of such HBHs is related to the Kerr superradiant instability triggered by a massive scalar field. This connection leads to the following conjecture: a (hairless) black hole which is afflicted by the superradiant instability of a given field must allow hairy generalizations with that field.

The Gregory-Laflamme instability and non-uniform generalizations of NUT strings

We explore via linearized perturbation theory the Gregory-Laflamme instability of the NUT string (i.e the D=4 Lorentzian NUT solution uplifted to five dimensions). Our results indicate that the Gregory-Laflamme instability persists in the presence of a NUT charge $n$, the critical length of the extra-dimension increasing with $n$ for the same value of mass. The non-uniform branch of NUT strings is numerically extended into the full nonlinear regime.

Stable Cosmic Vortons

We present for the first time solutions in the gauged $U(1)\times U(1)$ model of Witten describing vortons -- spinning flux loops stabilized against contraction by the centrifugal force. Vortons were heuristically described many years ago, however, the corresponding field theory solutions were not obtained and so the stability issue remained open. We construct explicitly a family of stationary vortons characterized by their charge and angular momentum. Most of them are unstable and break in pieces when perturbed. However, thick vortons with small radius preserve their form in the 3+1 non-linear dynamical evolution. This gives the first ever evidence of stable vortons and impacts several branches of physics where they could potentially exist. These range from cosmology, since vortons could perhaps contribute to dark matter, to QCD and condensed matter physics.

Spinning gauged boson stars in anti-de Sitter spacetime

We study axially symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations describing spinning gauged boson stars in a 3+1 dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetime. These smooth horizonless solutions possess an electric charge and a magnetic dipole moment, their angular momentum being proportional to the electric charge. A special class of solutions with a self-interacting scalar field, corresponding to static axially symmetric solitons with a nonzero magnetic dipole moment, is also investigated.

Rotating Wormholes in Five Dimensions

We consider rotating Lorentzian wormholes with a phantom field in five dimensions. These wormhole solutions possess equal angular momenta and thus represent cohomogeneity-1 configurations. For a given size of the throat, the angular momenta are bounded by the value of the corresponding extremal Myers-Perry black hole, which represents the limiting configuration. With increasing angular momenta the throat becomes increasingly deformed. At the same time, the violation of the null energy condition decreases to zero, as the limiting configuration is approached. Symmetric wormhole solutions satisfy a Smarr-like relation, which is analogous to the Smarr relation of extremal black holes. A stability analysis shows that the unstable mode of the static wormholes solutions vanishes when the angular momentum exceeds some critical value.

Sequences of extremal radially excited rotating black holes

In Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory the extremal Reissner-Nordström solution is no longer the single extremal solution with vanishing angular momentum, when the Chern-Simons coupling constant reaches a critical value. Instead a whole sequence of rotating extremal J=0 solutions arises, labeled by the node number of the magnetic U(1) potential. Associated with the same near horizon solution, the mass of these radially excited extremal solutions converges to the mass of the extremal Reissner-Nordström solution. On the other hand, not all near horizon solutions are also realized as global solutions

Axially symmetric static scalar solitons and black holes with scalar hair

We construct static, asymptotically flat black hole solutions with scalar hair. They evade the no-hair theorems by having a scalar potential which is not strictly positive. By including an azimuthal winding number in the scalar field ansatz, we find hairy black hole solutions which are static but axially symmetric only. These solutions possess a globally regular limit, describing scalar solitons. A branch of axially symmetric black holes is found to possess a positive specific heat.

Black hole solutions in d=5 Chern-Simons gravity

The five dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a negative cosmological constant becomes, for a special value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, a Chern-Simons (CS) theory of gravity. In this work we discuss the properties of several different types of black object solutions of this model. Special attention is paid to the case of spinning black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta which posses a regular horizon of spherical topology. Closed form solutions are obtained in the small angular momentum limit. Nonperturbative solutions are constructed by solving numerically the equations of the model. Apart from that, new exact solutions describing static squashed black holes and black strings are also discussed. The action and global charges of all configurations studied in this work are obtained by using the quasilocal formalism with boundary counterterms generalized for the case of a d=5 CS theory.

Abelian Hopfions of the CP^n model on R^{2n+1} and a fractionally powered topological lower bound

Regarding the Skyrme-Faddeev model on $\mathbb R^3$ as a $\mathbb C \mathbb P^1$ sigma model, we propose $\mathbb C \mathbb P^n$ sigma models on $\mathbb R^{2n+1}$ as generalisations which may support finite energy Hopfion solutions in these dimensions. The topological charge stabilising these field configurations is the Chern-Simons charge, namely the volume integral of the Chern-Simons density which has a local expression in terms of the composite connection and curvature of the CP^n field. It turns out that subject to the sigma model constraint, this density is a total divergence. We prove the existence of a topological lower bound on the energy, which, as in the Vakulenko-Kapitansky case in R^3, is a fractional power of the topological charge, depending on $n$. The numerical construction of the simplest ring shaped un-knot Hopfion on R^5 is also discussed.

Gravitating vortons as ring solitons in general relativity

Vortons can be viewed as (flat space-) field theory analogs of black rings in general relativity. They are made from loops of vortices, being sustained against collapse by the centrifugal force. In this work we discuss such configurations in the global version of Witten's U(1)xU(1) theory. We first consider solutions in a flat spacetime background and show their non-uniqueness. The inclusion of gravity leads to new features. In particular, an ergoregion can occur. Also, similar to boson stars, we show that the vortons exist only in a limited frequency range. The coupling to gravity gives rise to a spiral-like frequency dependence of the mass and charge. New solutions of the model describing 'semitopological vortons' and 'di-vortons' are also discussed.

$d\geq 5$ magnetized static, balanced black holes with $S^2\times S^{d-4}$ event horizon topology

We construct static, nonextremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations in $d=6,7$ spacetime dimensions, with an event horizon of $S^2\times S^{d-4}$ topology. These configurations are asymptotically flat, the U(1) field being purely magnetic, with a spherical distribution of monopole charges but no net charge measured at infinity. They can be viewed as generalizations of the $d=5$ static dipole black ring, sharing its basic properties, in particular the presence of a conical singularity. The magnetized version of these solutions is constructed by applying a Harrison transformation, which puts them into an external magnetic field. For $d=5,6,7$, balanced configurations approaching asymptotically a Melvin universe background are found for a critical value of the background magnetic field.

Electrically charged black branes in N=4^+, D=5 gauged supergravity

We analyze the properties of asymptotically AdS electrically charged black brane solutions in a consistent truncation of the N=4^+, D=5 Romans' gauged supergravity which contains gravity, SU(2) and U(1) gauge fields, and a dilaton possessing a nontrivial potential approaching a constant negative value at infinity. We find that the U(1)\times U(1) solutions become unstable to forming non-Abelian hair. These configurations emerge as zero modes of the Abelian solutions at critical temperature and a critical (nonvanishing) ratio of the electric charges and can be viewed as holographic p-wave superfluids.

Axially symmetric Yang-Mills-Higgs solutions in AdS spacetime

We consider axially symmetric solutions of SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory in globally AdS spacetime and a fixed Schwarzschild-AdS black hole background. The solutions are characterized by two integers $(m,n)$ where $m$ is related to the polar angle and $n$ to the azimuthal angle. Two types of finite energy, regular configurations are considered: solutions with net magnetic charge $n>1$ and monopole-antimonopole pairs and chains with zero net magnetic charge. The configurations are endowed with an electric charge and carry also a nonvanishing angular momentum density.

Spinning scalar solitons in anti-de Sitter spacetime

We present spinning Q-balls and boson stars in four dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. These are smooth, horizonless solutions for gravity coupled to a massive complex scalar field with a harmonic dependence on time and the azimuthal angle. Similar to the flat spacetime configurations, the angular momentum is quantized. We find that a class of solutions with a self-interaction potential has a limit corresponding to static solitons with axial symmetry only. An exact solution describing spherically symmetric Q-balls in a fixed AdS background is also discussed.

Black rings in more than five dimensions

We construct balanced black ring solutions in $d\geq 6$ spacetime dimensions, by solving the Einstein field equations numerically with suitable boundary conditions. The black ring solutions have a regular event horizon with $S^1\times S^{d-3}$ topology, and they approach the Minkowski background asymptotically. We analyze their global and horizon properties. The Smarr formula is well satisfied.
