Large-amplitude steady downstream water waves

We study wave-current interactions in two-dimensional water flows of constant vorticity over a flat bed. For large-amplitude periodic traveling waves that propagate at the water surface in the same direction as the underlying current (downstream waves), we prove explicit uniform bounds for their amplitude. In particular, our estimates show that the maximum amplitude of the waves becomes vanishingly small as the vorticity increases without limit. We also prove that the downstream waves on a global bifurcating branch are never overhanging, and that their mass flux and Bernoulli constant are uniformly bounded.

Singularities in axisymmetric free boundaries for ElectroHydroDynamic equations

We consider singularities in the ElectroHydroDynamic equations. In a regime where we are allowed to neglect surface tension, and assuming that the free surface is given by an injective curve and that either the fluid velocity or the electric field satisfies a certain non-degeneracy condition, we prove that either the fluid region or the gas region is asymptotically a cusp. Our proofs depend on a combination of monotonicity formulas and a non-vanishing result by Caffarelli and Friedman. As a by-product of our analysis we also obtain a special solution with convex conical air-phase which we believe to be new.

Global bifurcation of steady gravity water waves with critical layers

We construct large families of two-dimensional travelling water waves propagating under the influence of gravity in a flow of constant vorticity over a flat bed. A Riemann-Hilbert problem approach is used to recast the governing equations as a one-dimensional elliptic pseudo-differential equation with a scalar constraint. The structural properties of this formulation, which arises as the Euler-Lagrange equation of an energy functional, enable us to develop a theory of analytic global bifurcation.

Singularities of axisymmetric free surface flows with gravity

We consider a steady axisymmetric solution of the Euler equations for a fluid (incompressible and with zero vorticity) with a free surface, acted on only by gravity. We analyze stagnation points as well as points on the axis of symmetry. At points on the axis of symmetry which are not stagnation points, constant velocity motion is the only blow-up profile consistent with the invariant scaling of the equation. This suggests the presence of downward pointing cusps at those points. At stagnation points on the axis of symmetry, the unique blow-up profile consistent with the invariant scaling of the equation is Garabedian's pointed bubble solution with water above air. Thus at stagnation points on the axis of symmetry with no water above the stagnation point, the invariant scaling of the equation cannot be the right scaling. A fine analysis of the blow-up velocity yields that in the case that the surface is described by an injective curve, the velocity scales almost like $\sqrt{X^2+Y^2+Z^2}$ and is asymptotically given by the velocity field $$V(\sqrt{X^2+Y^2},Z)=c (-\sqrt{X^2+Y^2}, 2Z)$$ with a nonzero constant $c$. The last result relies on a frequency formula in combination with a concentration compactness result for the axially symmetric Euler equations by J.-M. Delort. While the concentration compactness result alone does not lead to strong convergence in general, we prove the convergence to be strong in our application.

Steady periodic water waves with constant vorticity: regularity and local bifurcation

This paper studies periodic traveling gravity waves at the free surface of water in a flow of constant vorticity over a flat bed. Using conformal mappings the free-boundary problem is transformed into a quasilinear pseudodifferential equation for a periodic function of one variable. The new formulation leads to a regularity result and, by use of bifurcation theory, to the existence of waves of small amplitude even in the presence of stagnation points in the flow.

On the existence of extreme waves and the Stokes conjecture with vorticity

This is a study of singular solutions of the problem of traveling gravity water waves on flows with vorticity. We show that, for a certain class of vorticity functions, a sequence of regular waves converges to an extreme wave with stagnation points at its crests. We also show that, for any vorticity function, the profile of an extreme wave must have either a corner of $120^\circ$ or a horizontal tangent at any stagnation point about which it is supposed symmetric. Moreover, the profile necessarily has a corner of $120^\circ$ if the vorticity is nonnegative near the free surface.

Bernoulli free-boundary problems in strip-like domains and a property of permanent waves in water of finite depth

We study weak solutions for a class of free boundary problems which includes as a special case the classical problem of traveling waves on water of finite depth. We show that such problems are equivalent to problems in fixed domains and study the regularity of their solutions. We also prove that in very general situations the free boundary is necessarily the graph of a function.

On some properties of travelling water waves with vorticity

We prove that for a large class of vorticity functions the crest of a corresponding travelling water wave is necessarily a point of maximal horizontal velocity. We also show that for waves with nonpositive vorticity the pressure in the flow is everywhere larger than the atmospheric pressure. A related a priori estimate for waves with nonnegative vorticity is also given.
