Second-order PDEs in 3D with Einstein-Weyl conformal structure

Einstein-Weyl geometry is a triple (D,g,w), where D is a symmetric connection, [g] is a conformal structure and w is a covector such that: (i) connection D preserves the conformal class [g], that is, Dg=wg; (ii) trace-free part of the symmetrised Ricci tensor of D vanishes. Three-dimensional Einstein-Weyl structures arise naturally on solutions of second-order dispersionless integrable PDEs in 3D. In this context, [g] coincides with the characteristic conformal structure and is therefore uniquely determined by the equation. On the contrary, the covector w is a somewhat more mysterious object, recovered from the Einstein-Weyl conditions. We demonstrate that, for generic second-order PDEs (for instance, for all equations not of Monge-Ampere type), the covector w is also expressible in terms of the equation, thus providing an efficient dispersionless integrability test. The knowledge of g and w provides a dispersionless Lax pair by an explicit formula which is apparently new. Some partial classification results of PDEs with Einstein-Weyl characteristic conformal structure are obtained. A rigidity conjecture is proposed according to which for any generic second-order PDE with Einstein-Weyl property, all dependence on the 1-jet variables can be eliminated via a suitable contact transformation.

Second-order PDEs in 4D with half-flat conformal structure

We study second-order PDEs in 4D for which the conformal structure defined by the characteristic variety of the equation is half-flat (self-dual or anti-self-dual) on every solution. We prove that this requirement implies the Monge-Ampere property. Since half-flatness of the conformal structure is equivalent to the existence of a nontrivial dispersionless Lax pair, our result explains the observation that all known scalar second-order integrable dispersionless PDEs in dimensions four and higher are of Monge-Ampere type. Some partial classification results of Monge-Ampere equations in 4D with half-flat conformal structure are also obtained.

Integrable systems in 4D associated with sixfolds in Gr(4,6)

Let $Gr(d,n)$ be the Grassmannian of $d$-dimensional linear subspaces of an $n$-dimensional vector space $V$. A submanifold $X\subset Gr(d, n)$ gives rise to a differential system $Σ(X)$ that governs $d$-dimensional submanifolds of $V$ whose Gaussian image is contained in $X$. We investigate a special case of this construction where $X$ is a sixfold in $Gr(4, 6)$. The corresponding system $Σ(X)$ reduces to a pair of first-order PDEs for 2 functions of 4 independent variables. Equations of this type arise in self-dual Ricci-flat geometry. Our main result is a complete description of integrable systems $Σ(X)$. These naturally fall into two subclasses. (1) Systems of Monge-Ampère type. The corresponding sixfolds $X$ are codimension 2 linear sections of the Plücker embedding $Gr(4,6)\subset\mathbb{P}^{14}$. (2) General linearly degenerate systems. The corresponding sixfolds $X$ are the images of quadratic maps $\mathbb{P}^6- Gr(4, 6)$ given by a version of the classical construction of Chasles. We prove that integrability is equivalent to the requirement that the characteristic variety of system $Σ(X)$ gives rise to a conformal structure which is self-dual on every solution. In fact, all solutions carry hyper-Hermitian geometry.

On a class of integrable systems of Monge-Ampère type

We investigate a class of multi-dimensional two-component systems of Monge-Ampère type that can be viewed as generalisations of heavenly-type equations appearing in self-dual Ricci-flat geometry. Based on the Jordan-Kronecker theory of skew-symmetric matrix pencils, a classification of normal forms of such systems is obtained. All two-component systems of Monge-Ampère type turn out to be integrable, and can be represented as the commutativity conditions of parameter-dependent vector fields. Geometrically, systems of Monge-Ampère type are associated with linear sections of the Grassmannians. This leads to an invariant differential-geometric characterisation of the Monge-Ampère property.

On the integrability in Grassmann geometries: integrable systems associated with fourfolds Gr(3, 5)

We investigate dispersionless integrable systems in 3D associated with fourfolds in the Grassmannian Gr(3,5). Such systems appear in numerous applications in continuum mechanics, general relativity and differential geometry, and include such well-known examples as the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, the Boyer-Finley equation, etc. We prove the equivalence of the four different approaches to integrability, revealing a remarkable correspondence with Einstein-Weyl geometry and the theory of GL(2,R) structures.

On the Einstein-Weyl and conformal self-duality equations

The equations governing anti-self-dual and Einstein-Weyl conformal geometries can be regarded as `master dispersionless systems' in four and three dimensions respectively. Their integrability by twistor methods has been established by Penrose and Hitchin. In this note we present, in specially adapted coordinate systems, explicit forms of the corresponding equations and their Lax pairs. In particular, we demonstrate that any Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl structure is locally given by a solution to the Manakov-Santini system, and we find a system of two coupled third-order scalar PDEs for a general anti-self-dual conformal structure in neutral signature.

Dispersionless integrable systems in 3D and Einstein-Weyl geometry

For several classes of second order dispersionless PDEs, we show that the symbols of their formal linearizations define conformal structures which must be Einstein-Weyl in 3D (or self-dual in 4D) if and only if the PDE is integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. This demonstrates that the integrability of these dispersionless PDEs can be seen from the geometry of their formal linearizations.

Equations of Associativity in Two-Dimensional Topological Field Theory as Integrable Hamiltonian Nondiagonalizable Systems of Hydrodynamic Type

Equations of associativity in two-dimensional topological field theory (they are known also as the Witten-Dijkgraaf-H.Verlinde-E.Verlinde (WDVV) system) are represented as an example of the general theory of integrable Hamiltonian nondiagonalizable (i.e., do not possessing Riemann invariants) systems of hydrodynamic type. A corresponding local nondegenerate Hamiltonian structure of hydrodynamic type (Poisson bracket of Dubrovin-Novikov type) is found. For n=3 the equations of associativity are reduced to the integrable three wave system by a chain of explicit transformations. Any solution of the integrable three wave system generates solutions of the equations of associativity. Explicit Bäcklund type transformations connecting solutions of different equations of associativity are found.
