Lie-Rinehart and Poisson algebras over $C^\infty$-rings

We define the analogue of Lie-Rinehart algebras over $C^\infty$-rings. We show that given a Poisson $C^\infty$-ring $\mathcal{A}$ its module $\Omega_{\mathcal{A}}^{1}$ of $C^\infty$-K\"{a}hler differentials is (part of) a Lie-Rinehart algebra. Conversely, given a Lie-Rinehart algebra $\mathcal{M} \xrightarrow{\rho} C^\infty\mathrm{Der}(\mathcal{A})$ over a $C^\infty$-ring $\mathcal{A}$, there is a natural Poisson bracket on the $C^\infty$-ring $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{M})$ associated with the $\mathcal{A}$-module $\mathcal{M}$ (the $C^\infty$-ring analogue of an $\mathcal{A}$-algebra freely generated by the module $\mathcal{M}$). In the case where $\mathcal{A}$ is the $C^\infty$-ring of smooth functions on a manifold $M$ and $\mathcal{M}$ is the module $\Gamma(E)$ of sections of a Lie algebroid $E \to M$, the $C^\infty$-ring $\mathcal{F}(\Gamma(E))$ is the ring of functions $C^\infty(E^\vee)$ on the total space of the vector bundle $E^\vee \to M$ dual to the vector bundle $E$.

Poisson $C^\infty$-schemes

We introduce Poisson $C^\infty$-rings and Poisson local $C^\infty$-ringed spaces. We show that the spectrum of a Poisson $C^\infty$-ring is an affine Poisson $C^\infty$-scheme. We then discuss applications that include singular symplectic and Poisson reductions, singular quasi-Poisson reduction, coisotropic reduction and Poisson-Dirac subschemes.

Vector fields and flows on $C^\infty$-schemes

We prove that a vector field on an affine $C^\infty$-scheme Spec(A) has a flow if the $C^\infty$-ring A is finitely generated. If the vector field is complete then the flow is the target map of a groupoid internal to the category of $C^\infty$-schemes.

Vector Fields and Flows on Subcartesian Spaces

This paper is part of a series of papers on differential geometry of $C^\infty$-ringed spaces. In this paper, we study vector fields and their flows on a class of singular spaces. Our class includes arbitrary subspaces of manifolds, as well as symplectic and contact quotients by actions of compact Lie groups. We show that derivations of the $C^\infty$-ring of global smooth functions integrate to smooth flows.

Cartan calculus for $C^\infty$-ringed spaces

In an earlier paper (arXiv:2212.11163) I constructed a complex of differential forms on a local $C^\infty$-ringed space. In this paper I define a sheaf of vector fields (``the tangent sheaf'') on a local $C^\infty$-ringed space, define contractions of vector fields and forms, Lie derivatives of forms with respect to vector fields, and show that the standard equations of Cartan calculus hold for vector fields and differential forms on local $C^\infty$-ringed spaces.

Differential forms on $C^\infty$-ringed spaces

We construct a complex of differential forms on a local $C^\infty$-ringed space. The two main classes of spaces we have in mind are differential spaces in the sense of Sikorski and $C^\infty$-schemes. Just as in the case of manifolds the construction is functorial. Consequently forms can be integrated over simplices and Stokes' theorem holds.

Stability and bifurcations of symmetric tops

We study the stability and bifurcation of relative equilibria of a particle on the Lie group $SO(3)$ whose motion is governed by an $SO(3)\times SO(2)$ invariant metric and an $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ invariant potential. Our method is to reduce the number of degrees of freedom at singular values of the $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ momentum map and study the stability of the equilibria of the reduced systems as a function of spin. The result is an elementary analysis of the fast/slow transition in the Lagrange and Kirchhoff tops. More generally, since an $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ invariant potential on $SO(3)$ can be thought of as ${\mathbb Z}_2$ invariant function on a circle, we analyze the stability and bifurcation of relative equilibria of the system in terms of the second and fourth derivative of the function.

Lie 2-algebras of vector fields

We show that the category of vector fields on a geometric stack has the structure of a Lie 2-algebra. This proves a conjecture of R.~Hepworth. The construction uses a Lie groupoid that presents the geometric stack. We show that the category of vector fields on the Lie groupoid is equivalent to the category of vector fields on the stack. The category of vector fields on the Lie groupoid has a Lie 2-algebra structure built from known (ordinary) Lie brackets on multiplicative vector fields of Mackenzie and Xu and the global sections of the Lie algebroid of the Lie groupoid. After giving a precise formulation of Morita invariance of the construction, we verify that the Lie 2-algebra structure defined in this way is well-defined on the underlying stack.

Networks of hybrid open systems

We generalize the results of "Networks of open systems" by the first author to the setting of hybrid systems. In particular we introduce the notions of hybrid open systems, their networks and maps between networks. A network of systems is a blueprint for building a larger system out of smaller subsystems by specifying a pattern of interactions between subsystems --- an interconnection map. Maps between networks allow us to produce maps between complex hybrid dynamical systems by specifying maps between their subsystems

Runge-Kutta and Networks

We categorify the RK family of numerical integration methods (explicit and implicit). Namely we prove that if a pair of ODEs are related by an affine map then the corresponding discrete time dynamical systems are also related by the map. We show that in practice this works well when the pairs of related ODEs come from the coupled cell networks formalism and, more generally, from fibrations of networks of manifolds.

Left-invariant vector fields on a Lie 2-group

A Lie 2-group $G$ is a category internal to the category of Lie groups. Consequently it is a monoidal category and a Lie groupoid. The Lie groupoid structure on $G$ gives rise to the Lie 2-algebra $\mathbb{X}(G)$ of multiplicative vector fields, see (Berwick-Evans -- Lerman). The monoidal structure on $G$ gives rise to a left action of the 2-group $G$ on the Lie groupoid $G$, hence to an action of $G$ on the Lie 2-algebra $\mathbb{X}(G)$. As a result we get the Lie 2-algebra $\mathbb{X}(G)^G$ of left-invariant multiplicative vector fields. On the other hand there is a well-known construction that associates a Lie 2-algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ to a Lie 2-group $G$: apply the functor $\mathsf{Lie}: \mathsf{Lie Groups} \to \mathsf{Lie Algebras}$ to the structure maps of the category $G$. We show that the Lie 2-algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is isomorphic to the Lie 2-algebra $\mathbb{X}(G)^G$ of left invariant multiplicative vector fields.

Networks of open systems

Many systems of interest in science and engineering are made up of interacting subsystems. These subsystems, in turn, could be made up of collections of smaller interacting subsystems and so on. In a series of papers David Spivak with collaborators formalized these kinds of structures (systems of systems) as algebras over presentable colored operads. It is also very useful to consider maps between dynamical systems, which in effect amounts to viewing dynamical systems as objects in an appropriate category. This is the point of view taken by DeVille and Lerman in the study of dynamics on networks. The goal of this paper is to describe an algebraic structure that encompasses both approaches to systems of systems. This allows us, on one hand, build new large open systems out of collections of smaller open subsystems and on the other keep track of maps between open systems. Consequently we obtain synchrony results for open systems which generalize the synchrony results of Golubitsky, Stewart and their collaborators for groupoid invariant vector fields on coupled cell networks.

An algebra of open continuous time dynamical systems and networks

Many systems of interest in science and engineering are made up of interacting subsystems. These subsystems, in turn, could be made up of collections of smaller interacting subsystems and so on. In a series of papers David Spivak with collaborators formalized these kinds of structures (systems of systems) as algebras over presentable colored operads. It is also very useful to consider maps between dynamical systems. This amounts to viewing dynamical systems as objects in an appropriate category. This is the point taken by DeVille and Lerman in the study of dynamics on networks. The goal of this paper is to describe an algebraic structure that encompasses both approaches to systems of systems. To this end we replace the monoidal category of wiring diagrams by a monoidal double category whose objects are surjective submersions. This allows us, on one hand, build new large open systems out of collections of smaller open subsystems and on the other keep track of maps between open systems. As a special case we recover the results of DeVille and Lerman on fibrations of networks of manifolds.

A category of hybrid systems

We propose a definition of the category of hybrid systems in which executions are special types of morphisms. Consequently morphisms of hybrid systems send executions to executions. We plan to use this result to define and study networks of hybrid systems.

Algebras of Open Dynamical Systems on the Operad of Wiring Diagrams

In this paper, we use the language of operads to study open dynamical systems. More specifically, we study the algebraic nature of assembling complex dynamical systems from an interconnection of simpler ones. The syntactic architecture of such interconnections is encoded using the visual language of wiring diagrams. We define the symmetric monoidal category W, from which we may construct an operad O(W), whose objects are black boxes with input and output ports, and whose morphisms are wiring diagrams, thus prescribing the algebraic rules for interconnection. We then define two W-algebras, G and L, which associate semantic content to the structures in W. Respectively, they correspond to general and to linear systems of differential equations, in which an internal state is controlled by inputs and produces outputs. As an example, we use these algebras to formalize the classical problem of systems of tanks interconnected by pipes, and hence make explicit the algebraic relationships among systems at different levels of granularity.

Parallel Transport on Principal Bundles over Stacks

In this paper we introduce a notion of parallel transport for principal bundles with connections over differentiable stacks. We show that principal bundles with connections over stacks can be recovered from their parallel transport thereby extending the results of Barrett, Caetano and Picken, and Schreiber and Waldof from manifolds to stacks. In the process of proving our main result we simplify Schreiber and Waldorf's definition of a transport functor for principal bundles with connections over manifolds and provide a more direct proof of the correspondence between principal bundles with connections and transport functors.

Non-Compact Symplectic Toric Manifolds

A key result in equivariant symplectic geometry is Delzant's classification of compact connected symplectic toric manifolds. The moment map induces an embedding of the quotient of the manifold by the torus action into the dual of the Lie algebra of the torus; its image is a unimodular ("Delzant") polytope; this gives a bijection between unimodular polytopes and isomorphism classes of compact connected symplectic toric manifolds. In this paper we extend Delzant's classification to non-compact symplectic toric manifolds. For a non-compact symplectic toric manifold the image of the moment map need not be convex and the induced map on the quotient need not be an embedding. Moreover, even when the map on the quotient is an embedding, its image no longer determines the symplectic toric manifold; a degree two characteristic class on the quotient makes an appearance. Nevertheless, the quotient is a manifold with corners, and the induced map from the quotient to the dual of the Lie algebra is what we call a unimodular local embedding. We classify non-compact symplectic toric manifolds in terms of manifolds with corners equipped with degree two cohomology classes and unimodular local embeddings into the dual of the Lie algebra of the corresponding torus. The main new ingredient is the construction of a symplectic toric manifold from such data. The proof passes through an equivalence of categories between symplectic toric manifolds and symplectic toric bundles over a fixed unimodular local embedding. This equivalence also gives a geometric interpretation of the degree two cohomology class.

Dynamics on Networks of Manifolds

We propose a precise definition of a continuous time dynamical system made up of interacting open subsystems. The interconnections of subsystems are coded by directed graphs. We prove that the appropriate maps of graphs called graph fibrations give rise to maps of dynamical systems. Consequently surjective graph fibrations give rise to invariant subsystems and injective graph fibrations give rise to projections of dynamical systems.
