We show that the cone associated with a moment map for an action of a torus on a contact compact connected manifold is a convex polyhedral cone and that the moment map has connected fibers provided the dimension of the torus is bigger than 2 and that no orbit is tangent to the contact distribution. This may be considered as a version of the Atiyah - Guillemin - Sternberg convexity theorem for torus actions on symplectic cones and as a direct generalization of the convexity theorem of Banyaga and Molino for completely integrable torus actions on contact manifolds.
We show that if a Lie group acts properly on a co-oriented contact manifold preserving the contact structure, then the contact quotient is topologically a stratified space (in the sense that a neighborhood of a point in the quotient is a product of a disk with a cone on a compact stratified space). As a corollary, we obtain that symplectic quotients for proper Hamiltonian actions are topologically stratified spaces in this strong sense thereby extending and simplifying previous work.
We describe a contact analog of the symplectic cut construction. As an application we show that the group of contactomorphisms for a particular overtwisted contact structure on the three sphere contains countably many nonconjugate two tori.
We generalize the Weinstein-Moser theorem on the existence of nonlinear normal modes (i.e., periodic orbits) near an equilibrium in a Hamiltonian system to a theorem on the existence of relative periodic orbits near a relative equilibrium in a Hamiltonian system with continuous symmetries. More specifically we significantly improve a result proved earlier jointly with Tokieda (math.SG/9901102): we remove a technical hypothesis which amounted to an assumption that the symmetry group is a torus.
We provided two explicit formulas for the intersection cohomology (as a graded vector space with pairing) of the symplectic quotient by a circle in terms of the $S^1$ equivariant cohomology of the original symplectic manifold and the fixed point data. The key idea is the construction of a small resolution of the symplectic quotient.
We prove a criterion for stability of relative equilibria in symmetric Hamiltonian systems at singular points of the momentum map. This generalizes a theorem of G.W. Patrick. The method of the proof is also useful in studying the bifurcation of relative equilibria.
Let Phi : M --> g^* be a proper moment map associated to an action of a compact connected Lie group, G, on a connected symplectic manifold, (M,ω). A collective function is a pullback via Φof a smooth function on g^*. In this paper we present four new results about the relationship between the collective functions and the G-invariant functions in the Poisson algebra of smooth functions on M.
We study the stability of symmetric trajectories of a particle on the Lie group $SO(3)$ whose motion is governed by an $SO(3)\times SO(2)$ invariant metric and an $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ invariant potential. Our method is to reduce the number of degrees of freedom at {\em singular} values of the $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ momentum map and study the stability of the equilibria of the reduced systems as a function of spin. The result is an elementary analysis of the fast/slow transition in the Lagrange and Kirchhoff tops. More generally, since an $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ invariant potential on $SO(3)$ can be thought of as ${\bf Z}_2$ invariant function on a circle, we get a condition on the second and fourth derivatives of the potential at the symmetric points that guarantees that the corresponding system gains stability as the spin increases.
In this paper we extend the results of Kirwan et alii on convexity properties of the moment map for Hamiltonian group actions, and on the connectedness of the fibers of the moment map, to the case of non-compact orbifolds. Our motivation is twofold. First, the category of orbifolds is important in symplectic geometry because, generically, the symplectic quotient of a symplectic manifold is an orbifold. Second, our proof is conceptually very simple since it reduces the non-abelian case to the abelian case.
In this paper I construct, using off the shelf components, a compact symplectic manifold with a non-trivial Hamiltonian circle action that admits no Kaehler structure. The non-triviality of the action is guaranteed by the existence of an isolated fixed point. The motivation for this work comes from the program of classification of Hamiltonian group actions. The Audin-Ahara-Hattori-Karshon classification of Hamiltonian circle actions on compact symplectic 4-manifolds showed that all of such manifolds are Kaehler. Delzant's classification of $2n$-dimensional symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian action of $n$-dimensional tori showed that all such manifolds are projective toric varieties, hence Kaehler. An example in this paper show that not all compact symplectic manifolds that admit Hamiltonian torus actions are Kaehler. Similar technique allows us to construct a compact symplectic manifold with a Hamiltonian circle action that admits no invariant complex structures, no invariant polarizations, etc.
In the first part of the paper, we build a foundation for further work on Hamiltonian actions on symplectic orbifolds. Most importantly we prove the orbifold versions of the abelian connectedness and convexity theorems. In the second half, we prove that compact symplectic orbifolds with completely integrable torus actions are classified by convex simple rational polytopes with a positive integer attached to each facet and that all such orbifolds are algebraic toric varieties.
A symplectic toric orbifold is a compact connected orbifold $M$, a symplectic form $ω$ on $M$, and an effective Hamiltonian action of a torus $T$ on $M$, where the dimension of $T$ is half the dimension of $M$. We prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between symplectic toric orbifolds and convex rational simple polytopes with positive integers attached to each facet.
We prove that the action of a reductive complex Lie group on a Kähler manifold can be linearized in the neighbourhood of a fixed point, provided that the restriction of the action to some compact real form of the group is Hamiltonian with respect to the Kähler form.
