Pfaffian L-ensembles related to the z-measures on partitions with the Jack parameters 1/2 or 2

We construct Pfaffian L-ensembles related to the z-measures on partitions and to the Plancherel measures on partitions with the Jack parameters 1/2 or 2. The results imply that these measures on partitions lead to Pfaffian point processes, and the correlation kernels of these processes can be expressed in terms of the corresponding L-matrices. We give explit formulae for these L-matrices.

The z-measures on partitions, Pfaffian point processes, and the matrix hypergeometric kernel

We consider a point process on one-dimensional lattice originated from the harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group, and defined by the z-measures with the deformation (Jack) parameter 2. We derive an exact Pfaffian formula for the correlation function of this process. Namely, we prove that the correlation function is given as a Pfaffian with a matrix kernel. The kernel is given in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions, and can be considered as a matrix analogue of the Hypergeometric kernel introduced by A. Borodin and G. Olshanski. Our result holds for all values of admissible complex parameters.

Matrix kernels for measures on partitions

We consider the problem of computation of the correlation functions for the z-measures with the deformation (Jack) parameters 2 or 1/2. Such measures on partitions are originated from the representation theory of the infinite symmetric group, and in many ways are similar to the ensembles of Random Matrix Theory of $β=4$ or $β=1$ symmetry types. For a certain class of such measures we show that correlation functions can be represented as Pfaffians including $2\times 2$ matrix valued kernels, and compute these kernels explicitly. We also give contour integral representations for correlation kernels of closely connected measures on partitions.

Correlation Kernels for Discrete Symplectic and Orthogonal Ensembles

H. Widom derived formulae expressing correlation functions of orthogonal and symplectic ensembles of random matrices in terms of orthogonal polynomials (H. Widom. J. Stat. Phys. 94, (1999) 347-363). We obtain similar results for discrete ensembles whose weights have rational discrete logarithmic derivatives, and compute explicitly correlation kernels associated to the classical Meixner and Charlier orthogonal polynomials.

Generalized characters of the symmetric group

Normalized irreducible characters of the symmetric group S(n) can be understood as zonal spherical functions of the Gelfand pair $(S(n)\times S(n),\Diag S(n))$. They form an orthogonal basis in the space of the functions on the group S(n) invariant with respect to conjugations by S(n). In this paper we consider a different Gelfand pair connected with the symmetric group, that is an ``unbalanced'' Gelfand pair $(S(n)\times S(n-1),\Diag S(n-1))$. Zonal spherical functions of this Gelfand pair form an orthogonal basis in a larger space of functions on S(n), namely in the space of functions invariant with respect to conjugations by $S(n-1)$. We refer to these zonal spherical functions as normalized \textit{generalized} characters of S(n). The main discovery of the present paper is that these generalized characters can be computed on the same level as the irreducible characters of the symmetric group. The paper gives a Murnaghan-Nakayama type rule, a Frobenius type formula, and an analogue of the determinantal formula for the generalized characters of S(n).

Giambelli compatible point processes

We distinguish a class of random point processes which we call Giambelli compatible point processes. Our definition was partly inspired by determinantal identities for averages of products and ratios of characteristic polynomials for random matrices found earlier by Fyodorov and Strahov. It is closely related to the classical Giambelli formula for Schur symmetric functions. We show that orthogonal polynomial ensembles, z-measures on partitions, and spectral measures of characters of generalized regular representations of the infinite symmetric group generate Giambelli compatible point processes. In particular, we prove determinantal identities for averages of analogs of characteristic polynomials for partitions. Our approach provides a direct derivation of determinantal formulas for correlation functions.

An exact formula for general spectral correlation function of random Hermitian matrices

We have found an exact formula expressing a general correlation function containing both products and ratios of characteristic polynomials of random Hermitian matrices. The answer is given in the form of a determinant. An essential difference from the previously studied correlation functions (of products only) is the appearance of non-polynomial functions along with the orthogonal polynomials. These non-polynomial functions are the Cauchy transforms of the orthogonal polynomials. The result is valid for any ensemble of beta=2 symmetry class and generalizes recent asymptotic formulae obtained for GUE and its chiral counterpart by different methods..

Universal Results for Correlations of Characteristic Polynomials: Riemann-Hilbert Approach

We prove that general correlation functions of both ratios and products of characteristic polynomials of Hermitian random matrices are governed by integrable kernels of three different types: a) those constructed from orthogonal polynomials; b) constructed from Cauchy transforms of the same orthogonal polynomials and finally c) those constructed from both orthogonal polynomials and their Cauchy transforms. These kernels are related with the Riemann-Hilbert problem for orthogonal polynomials. For the correlation functions we obtain exact expressions in the form of determinants of these kernels. Derived representations enable us to study asymptotics of correlation functions of characteristic polynomials via Deift-Zhou steepest-descent/stationary phase method for Riemann-Hilbert problems, and in particular to find negative moments of characteristic polynomials. This reveals the universal parts of the correlation functions and moments of characteristic polynomials for arbitrary invariant ensemble of $β=2$ symmetry class.

On correlation functions of characteristic polynomials for chiral Gaussian Unitary Ensemble

We calculate a general spectral correlation function of products and ratios of characteristic polynomials for a $N\times N$ random matrix taken from the chiral Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (chGUE). Our derivation is based upon finding an Itzykson-Zuber type integral for matrices from the non-compact manifold ${\sf{Gl(n,{\mathcal{C}})/U(1)\times ...\times U(1)}}$ (matrix Macdonald function). The correlation function is shown to be always represented in a determinant form generalising the known expressions for only positive moments. Finally, we present the asymptotic formula for the correlation function in the large matrix size limit.

Characteristic polynomials of random Hermitian matrices and Duistermaat-Heckman localisation on non-compact Kaehler manifolds

We reconsider the problem of calculating a general spectral correlation function containing an arbitrary number of products and ratios of characteristic polynomials for a N x N random matrix taken from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE). Deviating from the standard "supersymmetry" approach, we integrate out Grassmann variables at the early stage and circumvent the use of the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation in the "bosonic" sector. The method, suggested recently by one of us, is shown to be capable of calculation when reinforced with a generalization of the Itzykson-Zuber integral to a non-compact integration manifold. We arrive to such a generalisation by discussing the Duistermaat-Heckman localization principle for integrals over non-compact homogeneous Kaehler manifolds. In the limit of large $N$ the asymptotic expression for the correlation function reproduces the result outlined earlier by Andreev and Simons.

Spin in a variable magnetic field: the adiabatic approximation

The problem of spin precession in a time-dependent magnetic field is considered in the adiabatic approximation where the field direction or the angular velocity of its rotation is changing slowly. The precession angles are given by integrals in a way similar to the semi-classical approximation for the Schrödinger equation.
