Two-photon coupling via Josephson element II: Interaction dressing, cross-Kerr coupling, and limits of low-energy bosonic model

We study the interactions mediated by a symmetric superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), their renormalizations, and the applicability of the anharmonic oscillator (bosonic) model for a coupled phase qubit. The latter dwells in its metastable well holding a number of anharmonic energy states. The coupling SQUID can switch between the single- and two-photon interactions in situ. We find that, in the bosonic two-photon regime, the cross-Kerr coupling never vanishes as it dresses due to asymmetry in the qubit potential and nonlinearity of the coupler. Our quantitative results also depend on the bosonic approximation. We approach determining its limits by finding the minimum number of coherent energy states required for a dressing. For that, we lay out diagrams of the dressing virtual processes that climb the qubit ladder as high as possible. Near the two-photon resonance with a coupled resonator, we systematically calculate other relevant renormalizations due to nonresonant interactions. We provide verifiable predictions for the coupling rates. Modified systems can be applied for two-photon detection and for quantum-nondemolition readout of a qubit with an asymmetrical potential.

Single-photon limit of dispersive readout of a qubit with a photodetector

We study the dispersive readout of a qubit in the ultimate limit of a single-photon probe. The use of a single-photon probe avoids the errors due to nonorthogonality of coherent states. A photodetector is used in the scheme we consider. The dynamics of the system is studied using the Heisenberg-Langevin equations. We treat the counter-rotating terms in the Hamiltonian perturbatively, which leads to the Bloch-Siegert shift in the resonator frequency. It is shown how this can improve the readout. The theory of photon transport through the qubit and the resonator it couples to is provided while taking the effect of the counter-rotating terms into account. To calculate the readout contrast, we use two approaches. The first one neglects the qubit relaxation and allows us to derive a compact expression for the contrast. Also, we obtain simple estimates for the system parameters to maximize the contrast. The second approach accounts for the qubit relaxation, which allows us to further improve the contrast. We demonstrate that for a readout time of 1$μ$s, a contrast of more than 75% can be achieved for an ideal detector and single-photon source.

Few-photon Fock-state wave packet interacting with a cavity-atom system in a waveguide: Exact quantum state dynamics

In the paper, we employ a wavefunction approach to investigate the evolution of a two-photon wave packet propagating in a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) system. We derive and solve, both analytically and numerically, a set of equations of motion governing the quantum state of the system. That allows us to provide real-time analysis of the evolution of the wave packet two-photon joint spectrum (2PJS) and the excitation dynamics of the JC system in the course of its interaction with the two-photon pulse. We demonstrate that the 2PJS and the spectrum of the wave packet scattered from the JC system experience transformation for nonzero atom-cavity couplings. Moreover, using Schmidt decomposition, we show that the scattered photons feature frequency entanglement contrary to the incident ones which are not entangled.
