A higher-order Eckmann-Hilton argument

We give a higher-order higher-dimensional Eckmann-Hilton argument that is entirely algebraic. First we give an explicit argument showing that if we have two monoidal structures on a category with suitable interchange, we can derive a braiding on either of the monoidal structures. Then we show that given third monoidal structure, with suitable pairwise interchange on any pair of monoidal structures, each canonical braiding is forced to be a symmetry. As a motivating example, we show that for $n \geq 3$ any $n$-degenerate semi-strict $(n + 1)$-category has three suitably coherent monoidal structures on its single hom-category, thus the hom-category has the structure of a symmetric monoidal category.

Weak vertical composition II: totalities

We continue our study of semi-strict tricategories in which the only weakness is in vertical composition. We assemble the doubly-degenerate such tricategories into a 2-category, defining weak functors and transformations. We exhibit a biadjoint biequivalence between this 2-category and the 2-category of braided (weakly) monoidal categories, braided (weakly) monoidal functors, and monoidal transformations.

Weak vertical composition

We study semi-strict tricategories in which the only weakness is in vertical composition. We construct these as categories enriched in the category of bicategories with strict functors, with respect to the cartesian monoidal structure. As these are a form of tricategory it follows that doubly-degenerate ones are braided monoidal categories. We show that this form of semi-strict tricategory is weak enough to produce all braided monoidal categories. That is, given any braided monoidal category $B$ there is a doubly-degenerate ``vertically weak'' semi-strict tricategory whose associated braided monoidal category is braided monoidal equivalent to $B$.

Distributive laws for Lawvere theories

Distributive laws give a way of combining two algebraic structures expressed as monads; in this paper we propose a theory of distributive laws for combining algebraic structures expressed as Lawvere theories. We propose four approaches, involving profunctors, monoidal profunctors, an extension of the free finite-product category 2-monad from Cat to Prof, and factorisation systems respectively. We exhibit comparison functors between CAT and each of these new frameworks to show that the distributive laws between the Lawvere theories correspond in a suitable way to distributive laws between their associated finitary monads. The different but equivalent formulations then provide, between them, a framework conducive to generalisation, but also an explicit description of the composite theories arising from distributive laws.

Weak $\infty$-categories via terminal coalgebras

Higher categorical structures are often defined by induction on dimension, which a priori produces only finite-dimensional structures. In this paper we show how to extend such definitions to infinite dimensions using the theory of terminal coalgebras, and we apply this method to Trimble's notion of weak n-category. Trimble's definition makes explicit the relationship between n-categories and topological spaces; our extended theory produces a definition of Trimble infinity-category and a fundamental infinity-groupoid construction. Furthermore, terminal coalgebras are often constructed as limits of a certain type. We prove that the theory of Batanin-Leinster weak infinity-categories arises as just such a limit, justifying our approach to Trimble infinity-categories. In fact we work at the level of monads for infinity-categories, rather than infinity-categories themselves; this requires more sophisticated technology but also provides a more complete theory of the structures in question.

Iterated icons

We study the totality of categories weakly enriched in a monoidal bicategory using a notion of enriched icon as 2-cells. We show that when the monoidal bicategory in question is symmetric then this process can be iterated. We show that starting from the symmetric monoidal bicategory Cat and performing the construction twice yields a convenient symmetric monoidal bicategory of partially strict tricategories. We show that restricting to the doubly degenerate ones immediately gives the correct bicategory of "2-tuply monoidal categories" missing from our earlier studies of the Periodic Table. We propose a generalisation to all k-tuply monoidal n-categories.

Multivariable adjunctions and mates

We present the notion of "cyclic double multicategory", as a structure in which to organise multivariable adjunctions and mates. The classic example of a 2-variable adjunction is the hom/tensor/cotensor trio of functors; we generalise this situation to n+1 functors of n variables. Furthermore, we generalise the mates correspondence, which enables us to pass between natural transformations involving left adjoints to those involving right adjoints. While the standard mates correspondence is described using an isomorphism of double categories, the multivariable version requires the framework of "double multicategories". Moreover, we show that the analogous isomorphisms of double multicategories give a cyclic action on the multimaps, yielding the notion of "cyclic double multicategory". The work is motivated by and applied to Riehl's approach to algebraic monoidal model categories.

A note on the Penon definition of $n$-category

We show that doubly degenerate Penon tricategories give symmetric rather than braided monoidal categories. We prove that Penon tricategories cannot give all tricategories, but we show that a slightly modified version of the definition rectifies the situation. We give the modified definition, using non-reflexive rather than reflexive globular sets, and show that the problem with doubly degenerate tricategories does not arise.

Comparing operadic theories of $n$-category

We give a framework for comparing on the one hand theories of n-categories that are weakly enriched operadically, and on the other hand n-categories given as algebras for a contractible globular operad. Examples of the former are the definition by Trimble and variants (Cheng-Gurski) and examples of the latter are the definition by Batanin and variants (Leinster). We will show how to take a theory of n-categories of the former kind and produce a globular operad whose algebras are the n-categories we started with. We first provide a generalisation of Trimble's original theory that allows for the use of other parametrising operads in a very general way, via the notion of categories weakly enriched in V where the weakness is parametrised by an operad P in the category V. We define weak n-categories by iterating the weak enrichment construction using a series of parametrising operads P_i. We then show how to construct from such a theory an n-dimensional globular operad for each $n \geq 0$ whose algebras are precisely the n-categories we constructed by iterated weak enrichment, and we show that the resulting globular operad is contractible precisely when the operads P_i are contractible. We then show how the globular operad associated with Trimble's topological definition is related to the globular operad used by Batanin to define fundamental n-groupoids of spaces.

Monad interleaving: a construction of the operad for Leinster's weak $ω$-categories

We show how to "interleave" the monad for operads and the monad for contractions on the category \coll of collections, to construct the monad for the operads-with-contraction of Leinster. We first decompose the adjunction for operads and the adjunction for contractions into a chain of adjunctions each of which acts on only one dimension of the underlying globular sets at a time. We then exhibit mutual stability conditions that enable us to alternate the dimension-by-dimension free functors. Hence we give an explicit construction of a left adjoint for the forgetful functor $\owc \lra \coll$, from the category of operads-with-contraction to the category of collections. By applying this to the initial (empty) collection, we obtain explicitly an initial operad-with-contraction, whose algebras are by definition the weak $ω$-categories of Leinster.

Iterated distributive laws

We give a framework for combining $n$ monads on the same category via distributive laws satisfying Yang-Baxter equations, extending the classical result of Barr and Wells which combines two monads via one distributive law. We show that this corresponds to iterating $n$-times the process of taking the 2-category of monads in a 2-category, extending the result of Street characterising distributive laws. We show that this framework can be used to construct the free strict $n$-category monad on $n$-dimensional globular sets; we first construct for each $i$ a monad for composition along bounding $i$-cells, and then we show that the interchange laws define distributive laws between these monads, satisfying the necessary Yang-Baxter equations.

The periodic table of n-categories for low dimensions I: degenerate categories and degenerate bicategories

We examine the periodic table of weak n-categories for the low-dimensional cases. It is widely understood that degenerate categories give rise to monoids, doubly degenerate bicategories to commutative monoids, and degenerate bicategories to monoidal categories; however, to understand this correspondence fully we examine the totalities of such structures together with maps between them and higher maps between those. Categories naturally form a 2-category {\bfseries Cat} so we take the full sub-2-category of this whose 0-cells are the degenerate categories. Monoids naturally form a category, but we regard this as a discrete 2-category to make the comparison. We show that this construction does not yield a biequivalence; to get an equivalence we ignore the natural transformations and consider only the {\it category} of degenerate categories. A similar situation occurs for degenerate bicategories. The tricategory of such does not yield an equivalence with monoidal categories; we must consider only the categories of such structures. For doubly degenerate bicategories the tricategory of such is not naturally triequivalent to the category of commutative monoids (regarded as a tricategory). However in this case considering just the categories does not give an equivalence either; to get an equivalence we consider the {\it bicategory} of doubly degenerate bicategories. We conclude with a hypothesis about how the above cases might generalise for n-fold degenerate n-categories.

The periodic table of $n$-categories for low dimensions II: degenerate tricategories

We continue the project begun in ``The periodic table of $n$-categories for low dimensions I'' by examining degenerate tricategories and comparing them with the structures predicted by the Periodic table. For triply degenerate tricategories we exhibit a triequivalence with the partially discrete tricategory of commutative monoids. For the doubly degenerate case we explain how to construct a braided monoidal category from a given doubly degenerate category, but show that this does not induce a straightforward comparison between \bfseries{BrMonCat} and \bfseries{Tricat}. We show how to alter the natural structure of \bfseries{Tricat} in two different ways to provide a comparison, but show that only the more brutal alteration yields an equivalence. Finally we study degenerate tricategories in order to give the first fully algebraic definition of monoidal bicategories and the full tricategory structure \bfseries{MonBicat}.

Weak n-categories: opetopic and multitopic foundations

We generalise the concepts introduced by Baez and Dolan to define opetopes constructed from symmetric operads with a category, rather than a set, of objects. We describe the category of 1-level generalised multicategories, a special case of the concept introduced by Hermida, Makkai and Power, and exhibit a full embedding of this category in the category of symmetric operads with a category of objects. As an analogy to the Baez-Dolan slice construction, we exhibit a certain multicategory of function replacement as a slice construction in the multitopic setting, and use it to construct multitopes. We give an explicit description of the relationship between opetopes and multitopes.

Weak n-categories: comparing opetopic foundations

We define the category of tidy symmetric multicategories. We construct for each tidy symmetric multicategory Q a cartesian monad (E_Q,T_Q) and extend this assignation to a functor. We exhibit a relationship between the slice construction on symmetric multicategories, and the `free operad' monad construction on suitable monads. We use this to give an explicit description of the relationship between Baez-Dolan and Leinster opetopes.

Opetopic bicategories: comparison with the classical theory

We continue our previous modifications of the Baez-Dolan theory of opetopes to modify the Baez-Dolan definition of universality, and thereby the category of opetopic n-categories and lax functors. For the case n=2 we exhibit an equivalence between this category and the category of bicategories and lax functors. We examine notions of strictness in the opetopic theory.
