Equisingular Families of Projective Curves

In this survey, we report on progress concerning families of projective curves with fixed number and fixed (topological or analytic) types of singularities. We are, in particular, interested in numerical, universal and asymptotically proper sufficient conditions to guarantee the nonemptyness, T-smoothness and irreducibility of the variety of all projective curves with prescribed singularities in a fixed linear system. We also discuss the analogous problem for hypersurfaces of arbitrary dimension with isolated singularities, and we close with a section on open problems and conjectures.

An Improved Stability Method for Linear Systems with Fast-Varying Delays

Stability of linear systems with uncertain bounded time-varying delays is studied under assumption that the nominal delay values are not equal to zero. An input-output approach to stability of such systems is known to be based on the bound of the $L_2$-norm of a certain integral operator. There exists a bound on this operator in two cases: in the case where the delay derivative is not greater than 1 and in the case without any constraints on the delay derivative. In the present note we fill the gap between the two cases by deriving an operator bound which is an increasing and continuous function of the delay derivative upper bound $d \geq 1$. For $d\to \infty$ the new bound corresponds to the second case and improves the existing bound. As a result, improved frequency-domain and time-domain stability criteria are erived for systems with the delay derivative greater than 1.

Patchworking singular algebraic curves, non-Archimedean amoebas and enumerative geometry

We prove a new patchworking theorem for singular algebraic curves, which states the following. Given a complex toric threefold $Y$ which fibers over ${\mathbb C}$ with a reduced reducible zero fiber $Y_0$ and other fibers $Y_t$ smooth, and given a reduced curve $C_0\subset Y_0$, the theorem provides a sufficient condition for the existence of a one-parametric family of curves $C_t\subset Y_t$, which induces an equisingular deformation for some singular points of $C_0$ and certain prescribed deformations for the other singularities. As application we give a comment on a recent theorem by G. Mikhalkin on enumeration of nodal curves on toric surfaces via non-Archimedean amoebas [arXiv:math.AG/0209253]. Namely, using our patchworking theorem, we establish link between nodal curves over the field of complex Puiseux series and their non-Archimedean amoebas, what has been done by Mikhalkin in a different way. We discuss also the case of curves with a cusp as well as real nodal curves.

Appendix to "Welschinger invariant and enumeration of real rational curves"

The invariance of the Welschinger numbers for real unnodal Del Pezzo surfaces, which we used for the enumeration of real rational curves on real toric Del Pezzo surfaces (see math.AG/0303378 and IMRN 49 (2003), 2639-2653), follows from J.-Y. Welschinger's theorem stated and proved in a symplectic setting (math.AG/0303145 and CRAS, Ser. I, 336 (2003), 341-344). Here, we give an algebraic geometry version of the proof of the above invariance.

Analytic order of singular and critical points

We deal with the following closely related problems: (i) For a germ of a reduced plane analytic curve, what is the minimal degree of an algebraic curve with a singular point analytically equivalent (isomorphic) to the given one? (ii) For a germ of a holomorphic function in two variables with an isolated critical point, what is the minimal degree of a polynomial, equivalent to the given function up to a local holomorphic coordinate change? Classically known estimates for such a degree $d$ in these questions are $\sqrtμ+1\le d\le μ+1$, where $μ$ is the Milnor number. Our result in both the problems is $d\le a\sqrtμ$ with an absolute constant $a$. As a corollary, we obtain asymptotically proper sufficient conditions for the existence of algebraic curves with prescribed singularities on smooth algebraic surfaces.

Viro theorem and topology of real and complex combinatorial hypersurfaces

We introduce a class of combinatorial hypersurfaces in the complex projective space. They are submanifolds of codimension~2 in $\C P^n$ and are topologically "glued" out of algebraic hypersurfaces in $(\C^*)^n$. Our construction can be viewed as a version of the Viro gluing theorem, relating topology of algebraic hypersurfaces to the combinatorics of subdivisions of convex lattice polytopes. If a subdivision is convex, then according to the Viro theorem a combinatorial hypersurface is isotopic to an algebraic one. We study combinatorial hypersurfaces resulting from non-convex subdivisions of convex polytopes, show that they are almost complex varieties, and in the real case, they satisfy the same topological restrictions (congruences, inequalities etc.) as real algebraic hypersurfaces.

Castelnuovo function, zero-dimensional schemes and singular plane curves

We study families V of curves in P^2 of degree d having exactly r singular points of given topological or analytic types. We derive new sufficient conditions for V to be T-smooth (smooth of the expected dimension), respectively to be irreducible. For T-smoothness these conditions involve new invariants of curve singularities and are conjectured to be asymptotically proper, i.e., optimal up to a constant factor. To obtain the results, we study the Castelnuovo function, prove the irreducibility of the Hilbert scheme of zero-dimensional schemes associated to a cluster of infinitely near points of the singularities and deduce new vanishing theorems for ideal sheaves of zero-dimensional schemes in P^2. Moreover, we give a series of examples of cuspidal curves where the family V is reducible, but where the fundamental groups of P^2 \ C coincide (and are abelian) for all C in V.

Plane curves of minimal degree with prescribed singularities

We prove that there exists a>0 such that for any integer d>2 and any topological types S_1,...,S_n of plane curve singularities, satisfying $μ(S_1)+...+μ(S_n) \leq ad^2$, there exists a reduced irreducible plane curve of degree d with exactly n singular points of types S_1,...,S_n, respectively. This estimate is optimal with respect to the exponent of d. In particular, we prove that for any topological type S there exists an irreducible polynomial of degree $d \leq 14\sqrt{μ(S)}$ having a singular point of type S.

Witten deformation and polynomial differential forms

As is well-known, the Witten deformation of the De Rham complex computes the De Rham cohomology. In this paper we study the Witten deformation on a noncompact manifold and restrict it to differential forms which behave polynomially near infinity. Such polynomial differential forms naturally appear on manifolds with a cylindrical structure. We prove that the cohomology of the Witten deformation acting on the complex of the polynomially growing forms can be computed as the relative cohomology of the manifold with respect to the negative remote fiber of the function. We show that the assumptions of our main theorem are satisfied in a number of interesting special cases, including generic real polynomials.

On imaginary plane curves and Spin quotients of complex surfaces by complex conjugation

It is proven that for any topological or analytical types of isolated singular points of plane curves, there exists a non-real irreducible plane algebraic curve of degree $d$ which goes through $d^2$ real distinct points and has imaginary singular points of the given types. This result is used to construct a series of examples of complex algebraic surfaces $X$ defined over $\R$ whose quotients $Y=X/\conj$ by the complex conjugation $\conj$ are $Spin$ simply connected 4-manifolds with signature $16k$, for arbitrary integer $k>0$.

Geometry of families of nodal curves on rational surfaces

Let P^2_r be the projective plane blown up at r generic points. Denote by E_0,E_1,...,E_r the strict transform of a generic straight line on P^2 and the exceptional divisors of the blown-up points on P^2_r respectively. We consider the variety V of all irreducible curves C in |dE_0-d_1E_1-...-d_rE_r| with k nodes as the only singularities and give asymptotically nearly optimal sufficient conditions for its smoothness, irreducibility and non-emptyness. Moreover, we extend our conditions for the smoothness and the irreducibility on families of reducible curves. For r<10 we give the complete answer concerning the existence of nodal curves in V.
