Restoring General Relativity in massive bi-gravity theory

We study static spherically symmetric solutions of massive bi-gravity theory, free from the Boulware-Deser ghost. We show the recovery of General Relativity via the Vainshtein mechanism, in the weak limit of the physical metric. We find a single polynomial equation determining the behavior of the solution for distances smaller than the inverse graviton mass. This equation is generically of the seventh order, while for a specific choice of the parameters of the theory it can be reduced to lower orders. The solution is analytic in different regimes: for distances below the Vainshtein radius (where General Relativity is recovered), and in the opposite regime, beyond the Vainshtein radius, where the solution approaches the flat metric.

An introduction to the Vainshtein mechanism

We introduce the Vainshtein mechanism which plays a crucial role in massive gravities, as well as in related theories such as Galileons and their extensions. This mechanism, also known as k-mouflage, allows to hide via non linear effects - typically for source distances smaller than a so-called Vainshtein radius which depends on the source and on the theory considered - some degrees of freedom whose effects are then only left important at large distances, e.g. for cosmology. It is introduced here in non linear Fierz-Pauli theories (massive gravities), including the dRGT theories, in their decoupling limits, as well as in other models such as DGP model or generalized Galileons. This presentation is self-contained and before discussing the Vainshtein mechanism we introduce some useful results and concepts concerning massive gravity, such as the vDVZ discontinuity, the decoupling limits or the Boulware-Deser ghost.

Instability of black holes in massive gravity

We show that linear perturbations around the simplest black hole solution of massive bi-gravity theories, the bi-Schwarzschild solution, exhibit an unstable mode featuring the Gregory-Laflamme instability of higher-dimensional black strings. The result is obtained for the massive gravity theory which is free from the Boulware-Deser ghost, as well as for its extension with two dynamical metrics. These results may indicate that static black holes in massive gravity do not exist. For graviton mass of order of Hubble scale, however, the instability timescale is of order of the Hubble time.

Time-dependent spherically symmetric covariant Galileons

We study spherically symmetric solutions of the cubic covariant Galileon model in curved spacetime in presence of a matter source, in the test scalar field approximation. We show that a cosmological time evolution of the Galileon field gives rise to an induced matter-scalar coupling, due to the Galileon-graviton kinetic braiding, therefore the solution for the Galileon field is non trivial even if the bare matter-scalar coupling constant is set to zero. The local solution crucially depends on the asymptotic boundary conditions, and in particular, Minkowski and de Sitter asymptotics correspond to different branches of the solution. We study the stability of these solutions, namely, the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem and the positivity of energy for scalar and tensor perturbations, by diagonalizing the kinetic terms of the spin-2 and spin-0 degrees of freedom. In addition, we find that in presence of a cosmological time evolution of the Galileon field, its kinetic mixing with the graviton leads to a friction force, resulting to efficient damping of scalar perturbations within matter.

Plane waves in the generalized Galileon theory

We present an exact plane wave solution of the most general shift-symmetric Horndeski (generalized Galileon) theory. The solution consists of the scalar part, and the gravitational part with two polarization modes. The former is due to the presence of the non-trivial Galileon scalar field, and it is parametrized by an arbitrary function of the light-cone coordinate. For a trivial scalar field configuration the solution is equivalent to the plane gravitational wave in General Relativity. When the metric is Minkowski, we reproduce known results for the plane waves of k-essence and a soliton-like solutions of a non-covariant Galileon model in a flat space-time.

Constraints on Shift-Symmetric Scalar-Tensor Theories with a Vainshtein Mechanism from Bounds on the Time Variation of G

We show that the current bounds on the time variation of the Newton constant G can put severe constraints on many interesting scalar-tensor theories which possess a shift symmetry and a nonminimal matter-scalar coupling. This includes, in particular, Galileon-like models with a Vainshtein screening mechanism. We underline that this mechanism, if efficient to hide the effects of the scalar field at short distance and in the static approximation, can in general not alter the cosmological time evolution of the scalar field. This results in a locally measured time variation of G which is too large when the matter-scalar coupling is of order one.

Improving relativistic MOND with Galileon k-mouflage

We propose a simple field theory reproducing the MOND phenomenology at galaxy scale, while predicting negligible deviations from general relativity at small scales thanks to an extended Vainshtein ("k-mouflage") mechanism induced by a covariant Galileon-type Lagrangian. The model passes solar-system tests at the post-Newtonian order, including those of local Lorentz invariance, and its anomalous forces in binary-pulsar systems are orders of magnitude smaller than the tightest experimental constraints. The large-distance behavior is obtained as in Bekenstein's tensor-vector-scalar (TeVeS) model, but with several simplifications. In particular, no fine-tuned function is needed to interpolate between the MOND and Newtonian regimes, and no dynamics needs to be defined for the vector field because preferred-frame effects are negligible at small distances. The field equations depend on second (and lower) derivatives, and avoid thus the generic instabilities related to higher derivatives. Their perturbative solution around a Schwarzschild background is remarkably simple to derive. We also underline why the proposed model is particularly efficient within the class of covariant Galileons.

Dirac Born Infeld (DBI) Cosmic Strings

Motivated by brane physics, we consider the non-linear Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) extension of the Abelian-Higgs model and study the corresponding cosmic string configurations. The model is defined by a potential term, assumed to be of the mexican hat form, and a DBI action for the kinetic terms. We show that it is a continuous deformation of the Abelian-Higgs model, with a single deformation parameter depending on a dimensionless combination of the scalar coupling constant, the vacuum expectation value of the scalar field at infinity, and the brane tension. By means of numerical calculations, we investigate the profiles of the corresponding DBI-cosmic strings and prove that they have a core which is narrower than that of Abelian-Higgs strings. We also show that the corresponding action is smaller than in the standard case suggesting that their formation could be favoured in brane models. Moreover we show that the DBI-cosmic string solutions are non-pathological everywhere in parameter space. Finally, in the limit in which the DBI model reduces to the Bogomolnyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Abelian-Higgs model, we find that DBI cosmic strings are no longer BPS: rather they have positive binding energy. We thus argue that, when they meet, two DBI strings will not bind with the corresponding formation of a junction, and hence that a network of DBI strings is likely to behave as a network of standard cosmic strings.

k-Essence, superluminal propagation, causality and emergent geometry

The k-essence theories admit in general the superluminal propagation of the perturbations on classical backgrounds. We show that in spite of the superluminal propagation the causal paradoxes do not arise in these theories and in this respect they are not less safe than General Relativity.

Looking beyond the horizon

In this short talk we review our results from the paper hep-th/0604075 with the main stress on the issues of causality and acoustic metric in eikonal approximation. In addition we correct the formula for the redshift of sound signals from our original work. We show that, if there exists a special kind of Born-Infeld type scalar field, then one can send information from inside a black hole. This information is encoded in perturbations of the field propagating in non-trivial scalar field backgrounds, which serve as a "new ether". Although the action of the theory is manifestly Lorentz-invariant the non-trivial solutions break this symmetry spontaneously, allowing, the superluminal propagation of perturbations with respect to this "new ether". We found the stationary solution for background, which describes the accretion of the scalar field onto a black hole. Examining the propagation of small perturbations around this solution we show that the signals emitted inside the Schwarzschild horizon can reach an observer located outside the black hole. Thus the accreting field forms a hydrodynamical analog of a black hole whose horizon is inside of the gravitational black hole drawing in the scalar field.

B-Inflation

We propose a novel model of inflation based on a large class of covariant effective actions containing only the second derivatives of a scalar field. The initial conditions leading to the inflationary solutions in this model are rather generic. The graceful exit from the inflationary regime is natural once the first order derivative terms are included.

Gravitational radiation from chiral string cusps

We calculate the gravitational radiation from a cusp of the chiral cosmic strings as a function of the current on the string in the limit of small values of the current. The smoothing of the cosmic string cusp due to the presence of the superconducting current on the string leads to the different behavior of the gravitational radiation from the cusp as compared with the non-superconducting (ordinary) string. The difference between the gravitational energy radiation from the chiral cusp and the ordinary one is proportional to the value of the current on the string. It is shown that there is a high-frequency cutoff in the spectrum of the gravitational radiation from the chiral string. The frequency cutoff depends on the value of the string current. This effect is crucial for the detection of gravitation wave bursts from cosmic strings: the rather large current on the string would lower the amplitude of the incoming signal.

Oscillation damping of chiral string loops

Chiral cosmic string loop tends to the stationary (vorton) configuration due to the energy loss into the gravitational and electromagnetic radiation. We describe the asymptotic behaviour of near stationary chiral loops and their fading to vortons. General limits on the gravitational and electromagnetic energy losses by near stationary chiral loops are found. For these loops we estimate the oscillation damping time. We present solvable examples of gravitational radiation energy loss by some chiral loop configurations. The analytical dependence of string energy with time is found in the case of the chiral ring with small amplitude radial oscillations.

Gravitational Lensing of Relativistic Fireball

The gravitational lensing of a relativistic fireball can produce the time delayed multiple images with quite different spectra and temporal patterns in contrast with a nonrelativistic source and hence can imitate the source recurrence. In particular, the enigmatic four multiple gamma-ray bursts detected during two days at October 1996 in the same sky region may be due to a single fireball event multiply imaged by the foreground galactic nucleus or cluster of galaxies.
