Projective surfaces of maximal sectional regularity

We study projective surfaces $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ (with $r \geq 5$) of maximal sectional regularity and degree $d > r$, hence surfaces for which the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg(C)$ of a general hyperplane section curve $C = X \cap \mathbb{P}^{r-1}$ takes the maximally possible value $d-r+3$. We show that each of these surfaces is either a cone over a curve $C \subset \mathbb{P}^{r-1}$ of maximal regularity or else a birational outer linear projection of a smooth rational surface scroll $\widetilde{X} \subset \mathbb{P}^{d+1}$. We prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of these surfaces satisfies the equality $\reg(X) = d-r+3$ and we compute or estimate various of their cohomological invariants as well as their Betti numbers. We study the the extremal variety $\mathbb{F}(X)$ of these surfaces $X$, that is the closed union of the extremal secant lines of all smooth hyperplane section curves of $X$. We show that $\mathbb{F}(X)$ is either a plane or that otherwise $r =5$ and $\mathbb{F}(X)$ is a rational smooth threefold scroll $S(1,1,1) \subset \mathbb{P}^5$.

On hypersurfaces containing projective varieties

Classical Castelnuovo's Lemma shows that the number of linearly independent quadratic equations of a nondegenerate irreducible projective variety of codimension $c$ is at most ${{c+1} \choose {2}}$ and the equality is attained if and only if the variety is of minimal degree. Also a generalization of Castelnuovo's Lemma by G. Fano implies that the next case occurs if and only if the variety is a del Pezzo variety. For curve case, these results are extended to equations of arbitrary degree respectively by J. Harris and S. L'vovsky. This paper is intended to extend these results to arbitrary dimensional varieties and to the next cases.

On secant loci and simple linear projections of some projective varieties

In this paper, we study how simple linear projections of some projective varieties behave when the projection center runs through the ambient space. More precisely, let $X \subset ¶^r$ be a projective variety satisfying Green-Lazarsfeld's property $N_p$ for some $p \geq 2$, $q \in ¶^r$ a closed point outside of $X$, and $X_q := π_q (X) \subset ¶^{r-1}$ the projected image of $X$ from $q$. First, it is shown that the secant locus $Σ_q (X)$ of $X$ with respect to $q$, i.e. the set of all points on $X$ spanning secant lines passing through $q$, is either empty or a quadric in a subspace of $¶^r$. This implies that the finite morphism $π_q : X \to X_q$ is birational. Our main result is that cohomological and local properties of $X_q$ are precisely determined by $Σ_q (X)$. To complete this result, the next step should be to classify all possible secant loci and to decompose the ambient space via the classification of secant loci. We obtain such a decomposition for Veronese embeddings and Segre embeddings. Also as an application of the main result, we study cohomological properties of low degree varieties.

Complete Linear Series on a Hyperelliptic Curve

In this paper we study complete linear series on a hyperelliptic curve $C$ of arithmetic genus $g$. Let $A$ be the unique line bundle on $C$ such that $|A|$ is a $g^1_2$, and let $\mathcal{L}$ be a line bundle on $C$ of degree $d$. Then $\mathcal{L}$ can be factorized as $\mathcal{L} = A^m \otimes B$ where $m$ is the largest integer satisfying $H^0 (C,\mathcal{L} \otimes A^{-m}) \neq 0$. Let $b = {deg}(B)$. We say that \textit{the factorization type of} $\mathcal{L}$ is $(m,b)$. Our main results in this paper assert that $(m,b)$ gives a precise answer for many natural questions about $\mathcal{L}$.

Some effects of Veronese map on syzygies of projective varieties

Let $X \subset ¶^r$ be a nondegenerate projective variety and let $ν_{\ell} : ¶^r \to ¶^N$ be the $\ell$-th Veronese embedding. In this paper we study the higher normality, defining equations and syzygies among them for the projective embedding $ν_{\ell} (X) \subset ¶^N$. We obtain that for a very ample line bundle $L \in {Pic}X$ such that $X \subset ¶H^0 (X,L)$ is $m$-regular in the sense of Castelnuovo-Mumford, $(X,L^{\ell})$ satisfies property $N_{\ell}$ for all $\ell \geq m$ (Theorem \ref{thm:main1}). This is a generalization of M. Green's work that $(¶^r,\mathcal{O}_{¶^r} (\ell))$ satisfies property $N_{\ell}$. Also our result refines works of Ein-Lazarsfeld in \cite{EL}, Gallego-Purnaprajna in \cite{GP} and E. Rubei in \cite{Rubei1}, \cite{Rubei} and \cite{Ru1}.

On higher syzygies of ruled surfaces II

In this article we we continue the study of property $N_p$ of irrational ruled surfaces begun in \cite{ES}. Let $X$ be a ruled surface over a curve of genus $g \geq 1$ with a minimal section $C_0$ and the numerical invariant $e$. When $X$ is an elliptic ruled surface with $e = -1$, there is an elliptic curve $E \subset X$ such that $E \equiv 2C_0 -f$. And we prove that if $L \in {Pic}X$ is in the numerical class of $aC_0 +bf$ and satisfies property $N_p$, then $(C,L|_{C_0})$ and $(E,L|_E)$ satisfy property $N_p$ and hence $a+b \geq 3+p$ and $a+2b \geq 3+p$. This gives a proof of the relevant part of Gallego-Purnaprajna' conjecture in \cite{GP2}. When $g \geq 2$ and $e \geq 0$ we prove some effective results about property $N_p$. Let $L \in {Pic}X$ be a line bundle in the numerical class of $aC_0 +bf$. Our main result is about the relation between higher syzygies of $(X,L)$ and those of $(C,L_{C})$ where $L_C$ is the restriction of $L$ to $C_0$. In particular, we show the followings: $(1)$ If $e \geq g-2$ and $b-ae \geq 3g-2$, then $L$ satisfies property $N_p$ if and only if $b-ae \geq 2g+1+p$. $(2)$ When $C$ is a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g \geq 2$, $L$ is normally generated if and only if $b-ae \geq 2g+1$ and normally presented if and only if $b-ae \geq 2g+2$. Also if $e \geq g-2$, then $L$ satisfies property $N_p$ if and only if $a \geq 1$ and $b-ae \geq 2g+1+p$.

Noncomplete embeddings of rational surfaces

In this paper, we study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of nonlinearly normal embedding of rational surfaces. Let $X$ be a rational surface and let $L \in {Pic}X$ be a very ample line bundle. For a very ample subsystem $V \subset H^0 (X,L)$ of codimension $t \geq 1$, if $X \hookrightarrow ¶(V)$ satisfies Property $N^S_1$, then ${Reg} (X) \leq t+2$\cite{KP}. Thus we investigate Property $N^S_1$ of noncomplete linear systems on X. And our main result is about a condition of the position of $V$ in $H^0 (X,L)$ such that $X \hookrightarrow ¶(V)$ satisfies Property $N^S_1$. Indeed it is related to the geometry of a smooth rational curve of $X$. Also we apply our result to $¶^2$ and Hirzebruch surfaces.

On higher syzygies of ruled surfaces

We study higher syzygies of a ruled surface $X$ over a curve of genus $g$ with the numerical invariant $e$. Let $L \in {Pic}X$ be a line bundle in the numerical class of $aC_0 +bf$. We prove that for $0 \leq e \leq g-3$, $L$ satisfies property $N_p$ if $a \geq p+2$ and $b-ae \geq 3g-1-e+p$ and for $e \geq g-2$, $L$ satisfies property $N_p$ if $a \geq p+2$ and $b-ae\geq 2g+1+p$. By using these facts, we obtain Mukai type results. For ample line bundles $A_i$, we show that $K_X + A_1 + ... + A_q$ satisfies property $N_p$ when $0 \leq e < \frac{g-3}{2}$ and $q \geq g-2e+1 +p$ or when $e \geq \frac{g-3}{2}$ and $q \geq p+4$. Therefore we prove Mukai's conjecture for ruled surface with $e \geq \frac{g-3}{2}$. Also we prove that when $X$ is an elliptic ruled surface with $e \geq 0$, $L$ satisfies property $N_p$ if and only if $a \geq 1$ and $b-ae\geq 3+p$.

On Higher Syzygies of ruled varieties over a curve

For a vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$ of rank $n+1$ over a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g$, let $X=¶_C (\mathcal{E})$ with projection map $π:X\to C$. In this paper we investigate the minimal free resolution of homogeneous coordinate rings of $X$. We first clarify the relations between higher syzygies of very ample line bundles on $X$ and higher syzygies of Veronese embedding of fibres of $π$ by the same line bundle. More precisely, letting $H = \mathcal{O}_{¶_C (\mathcal{E})} (1)$ be the tautological line bundle, we prove that if $(¶^n,\mathcal{O}_{¶^n} (a))$ satisfies Property $N_p$, then $(X,aH+π^*B)$ satisfies Property $N_p$ for all $B \in {Pic}C$ having sufficiently large degree(Theorem \ref{thm:positive}). And also the effective bound of ${deg}(B)$ for Property $N_p$ is obtained(Theorem \ref{thm:1}, \ref{thm:2}, \ref{thm:3} and \ref{thm:4}). For the converse, we get some partial answer(Corollary \ref{cor:negative}). Secondly, by using these results we prove some Mukai-type statements. In particular, Mukai's conjecture is true for $X$ when ${rank}(\mathcal{E}) \geq g$ and $μ^- (\mathcal{E})$ is an integer(Corollary \ref{cor:Mukai}). Finally for all $n$, we construct an $n$-dimensional ruled variety $X$ and an ample line bundle $A \in {Pic}X$ which shows that the condition of Mukai's conjecture is optimal for every $p \geq 0$.

Some effects of property $N_p$ on the higher normality and defining equations of nonlinearly normal varieties

For a smooth projective variety $X\subset ¶^r$ embedded by the complete linear system, Property $N_p$ has been studied for a long time. On the other hand, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity conjecture and related problems have been focused for a projective variety which is not necessarily linearly normal. This paper aims to explain the influence of Property $N_p$ on higher normality and defining equations of a smooth variety embedded by sub-linear system. Also we prove a claim about Property $N_p$ of surface scrolls which is a generalization of Green's work in \cite{Green} about Property $N_p$ for curves.
