On the behaviour of stochastic heat equations on bounded domains

Consider the following equation $$\partial_t u_t(x)=\frac{1}{2}\partial _{xx}u_t(x)+λσ(u_t(x))\dot{W}(t,\,x)$$ on an interval. Under Dirichlet boundary condition, we show that in the long run, the second moment of the solution grows exponentially fast if $λ$ is large enough. But if $λ$ is small, then the second moment eventually decays exponentially. If we replace the Dirichlet boundary condition by the Neumann one, then the second moment grows exponentially fast no matter what $λ$ is. We also provide various extensions.

The Landau Equation for Maxwellian molecules and the Brownian Motion on SO_R(N)

In this paper we prove that the spatially homogeneous Landau equation for Maxwellian molecules can be represented through the product of two elementary processes. The first one is the Brownian motion on the group of rotations. The second one is, conditionally on the first one, a Gaussian process. Using this representation, we establish sharp multi-scale upper and lower bounds for the transition density of the Landau equation, the multi-scale structure depending on the shape of the support of the initial condition.

On the LAMN property for continuous observations of some diffusion processes with jumps

In this paper, we consider a diffusion process with jumps whose drift and jump coefficient depend on an unknown parameter. We then give a self-contained proof of the local asymptotic mixed normality (LAMN) property when the process is observed continuously in a time interval $[0; T]$ as $T\to\infty$, and derive, as a consequence, the local asymptotic normality (LAN) property in the ergodic case. For this, we give a proof of a Girsanov's theorem and a Central Limit theorem for a pure jump martingale. Our results could be viewed as a consequence of the LAMN property for semimartingales proved by Luschgy [15], using the Girsanov's theorem for semimartingales obtained in Jacod and Shiryaev [9], and the Central Limit theorem for semimartingales established by Sørensen [21] and Feigin [3]. The aim of this paper is to present a proof of these results without using this abstract semimartingale theory but integral equations with respect to Poisson random measures.

LAN property for a linear model with jumps

In this paper, we consider a linear model with jumps driven by a Brownian motion and a compensated Poisson process, whose drift and diffusion coefficients as well as its intensity are unknown parameters. Supposing that the process is observed discretely at high frequency we derive the local asymptotic normality (LAN) property. In order to obtain this result, Malliavin calculus and Girsanov's theorem are applied in order to write the log-likelihood ratio in terms of sums of conditional expectations, for which a central limit theorem for triangular arrays can be applied.

On probability laws of solutions to differential systems driven by a fractional Brownian motion

This article investigates several properties related to densities of solutions X to differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/4. We first determine conditions for strict positivity of the density of X_t. Then we obtain some exponential bounds for this density when the diffusion coefficient satisfies an elliptic type condition. Finally, still in the elliptic case, we derive some bounds on the hitting probabilities of sets by fractional differential systems in terms of Newtonian capacities.

Critical Brownian sheet does not have double points

We derive a decoupling formula for the Brownian sheet which has the following ready consequence: An $N$-parameter Brownian sheet in $\mathbf{R}^d$ has double points if and only if $d<4N$. In particular, in the critical case where $d=4N$, the Brownian sheet does not have double points. This answers an old problem in the folklore of the subject. We also discuss some of the geometric consequences of the mentioned decoupling, and establish a partial result concerning $k$-multiple points in the critical case $k(d-2N)=d$.

Hitting probabilities for systems of non-linear stochastic heat equations in spatial dimension $k\geq 1$

We consider a system of $d$ non-linear stochastic heat equations in spatial dimension $k \geq 1$, whose solution is an $\R^d$-valued random field $u= \{u(t\,,x),\, (t,x) \in \R_+ \times \R^k\}$. The $d$-dimensional driving noise is white in time and with a spatially homogeneous covariance defined as a Riesz kernel with exponent $β$, where $0<β<(2 \wedge k)$. The non-linearities appear both as additive drift terms and as multipliers of the noise. Using techniques of Malliavin calculus, we establish an upper bound on the two-point density, with respect to Lebesgue measure, of the $\R^{2d}$-valued random vector $(u(s,y),u(t,x))$, that, in particular, quantifies how this density degenerates as $(s,y) \to (t,x)$. From this result, we deduce a lower bound on hitting probabilities of the process $u$, in terms of Newtonian capacity. We also establish an upper bound on hitting probabilities of the process in terms of Hausdorff measure. These estimates make it possible to show that points are polar when $d > \frac{4+2k}{2-β}$ and are not polar when $d < \frac{4+2k}{2-β}$. %(if $\frac{4+2k}{2-β}$ is an integer, then the case $d=\frac{4+2k}{2-β}$ is open). In the first case, we also show that the Hausdorff dimension of the range of the process is $\frac{4+2k}{2-β}$ a.s.

Existence and regularity of the density for the solution to semilinear dissipative parabolic SPDEs

We prove existence and smoothness of the density of the solution to a nonlinear stochastic heat equation on $L^2(\mathcal{O})$ (evaluated at fixed points in time and space), where $\mathcal{O}$ is an open bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The equation is driven by an additive Wiener noise and the nonlinear drift term is the superposition operator associated to a real function which is assumed to be (maximal) monotone, continuously differentiable, and growing not faster than a polynomial. The proof uses tools of the Malliavin calculus combined with methods coming from the theory of maximal monotone operators.

On the density of systems of non-linear spatially homogeneous SPDEs

In this paper, we consider a system of $k$ second order non-linear stochastic partial differential equations with spatial dimension $d \geq 1$, driven by a $q$-dimensional Gaussian noise, which is white in time and with some spatially homogeneous covariance. The case of a single equation and a one-dimensional noise, has largely been studied in the literature. The first aim of this paper is to give a survey of some of the existing results. We will start with the existence, uniqueness and Hölder's continuity of the solution. For this, the extension of Walsh's stochastic integral to cover some measure-valued integrands will be recalled. We will then recall the results concerning the existence and smoothness of the density, as well as its strict positivity, which are obtained using techniques of Malliavin calculus. The second aim of this paper is to show how these results extend to our system of SPDEs. In particular, we give sufficient conditions in order to have existence and smoothness of the density on the set where the columns of the diffusion matrix span $\R^k$. We then prove that the density is strictly positive in a point if the connected component of the set where the columns of the diffusion matrix span $\R^k$ which contains this point has a non void intersection with the support of the law of the solution. We will finally check how all these results apply to the case of the stochastic heat equation in any space dimension and the stochastic wave equation in dimension $d\in \{1,2,3\}$.

Gaussian estimates for the density of the non-linear stochastic heat equation in any space dimension

In this paper, we establish lower and upper Gaussian bounds for the probability density of the mild solution to the stochastic heat equation with multiplicative noise and in any space dimension. The driving perturbation is a Gaussian noise which is white in time with some spatially homogeneous covariance. These estimates are obtained using tools of the Malliavin calculus. The most challenging part is the lower bound, which is obtained by adapting a general method developed by Kohatsu-Higa to the underlying spatially homogeneous Gaussian setting. Both lower and upper estimates have the same form: a Gaussian density with a variance which is equal to that of the mild solution of the corresponding linear equation with additive noise.

Level sets of the stochastic wave equation driven by a symmetric Lévy noise

We consider the solution $\{u(t,x);t\geq0,x\in\mathbf{R}\}$ of a system of $d$ linear stochastic wave equations driven by a $d$-dimensional symmetric space-time Lévy noise. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition on the characteristic exponent of the Lévy noise, which describes exactly when the zero set of $u$ is non-void. We also compute the Hausdorff dimension of that zero set when it is non-empty. These results will follow from more general potential-theoretic theorems on the level sets of Lévy sheets.

A Local time correspondence for stochastic partial differential equations

It is frequently the case that a white-noise-driven parabolic and/or hyperbolic stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) can have random-field solutions only in spatial dimension one. Here we show that in many cases, where the ``spatial operator'' is the L^2-generator of a Lévy process X, a linear SPDE has a random-field solution if and only if the symmetrization of X possesses local times. This result gives a probabilistic reason for the lack of existence of random-field solutions in dimensions strictly bigger than one. In addition, we prove that the solution to the SPDE is [Hölder] continuous in its spatial variable if and only if the said local time is [Hölder] continuous in its spatial variable. We also produce examples where the random-field solution exists, but is almost surely unbounded in every open subset of space-time. Our results are based on first establishing a quasi-isometry between the linear L^2-space of the weak solutions of a family of linear SPDEs, on one hand, and the Dirichlet space generated by the symmetrization of X, on the other hand. We study mainly linear equations in order to present the local-time correspondence at a modest technical level. However, some of our work has consequences for nonlinear SPDEs as well. We demonstrate this assertion by studying a family of parabolic SPDEs that have additive nonlinearities. For those equations we prove that if the linearized problem has a random-field solution, then so does the nonlinear SPDE. Moreover, the solution to the linearized equation is [Hölder] continuous if and only if the solution to the nonlinear equation is. And the solutions are bounded and unbounded together as well. Finally, we prove that in the cases that the solutions are unbounded, they almost surely blow up at exactly the same points.

The fractional stochastic heat equation on the circle: Time regularity and potential theory

We consider a system of $d$ linear stochastic heat equations driven by an additive infinite-dimensional fractional Brownian noise on the unit circle $S^1$. We obtain sharp results on the Hölder continuity in time of the paths of the solution $u=\{u(t, x)\}_{t \in \mathbb{R}_+, x \in S^1}$. We then establish upper and lower bounds on hitting probabilities of $u$, in terms of respectively Hausdorff measure and Newtonian capacity.

Hitting probabilities for systems of non-linear stochastic heat equations with multiplicative noise

We consider a system of d non-linear stochastic heat equations in spatial dimension 1 driven by d-dimensional space-time white noise. The non-linearities appear both as additive drift terms and as multipliers of the noise. Using techniques of Malliavin calculus, we establish upper and lower bounds on the one-point density of the solution u(t,x), and upper bounds of Gaussian-type on the two-point density of (u(s,y),u(t,x)). In particular, this estimate quantifies how this density degenerates as (s,y) converges to (t,x). From these results, we deduce upper and lower bounds on hitting probabilities of the process {u(t,x)}_{t \in \mathbb{R}_+, x \in [0,1]}, in terms of respectively Hausdorff measure and Newtonian capacity. These estimates make it possible to show that points are polar when d >6 and are not polar when d<6. We also show that the Hausdorff dimension of the range of the process is 6 when d>6, and give analogous results for the processes t \mapsto u(t,x) and x \mapsto u(t,x). Finally, we obtain the values of the Hausdorff dimensions of the level sets of these processes.

Hitting Probabilities for Systems of Non-Linear Stochastic Heat Equations with Additive Noise

We consider a system of $d$ coupled non-linear stochastic heat equations in spatial dimension 1 driven by $d$-dimensional additive space-time white noise. We establish upper and lower bounds on hitting probabilities of the solution $\{u(t, x)\}_{t \in \mathbb{R}_+, x \in [0, 1]}$, in terms of respectively Hausdorff measure and Newtonian capacity. We also obtain the Hausdorff dimensions of level sets and their projections. A result of independent interest is an anisotropic form of the Kolmogorov continuity theorem.

Estimates for the density of a nonlinear Landau process

The aim of this paper is to obtain estimates for the density of the law of a specific nonlinear diffusion process at any positive bounded time. This process is issued from kinetic theory and is called Landau process, by analogy with the associated deterministic Fokker-Planck-Landau equation. It is not Markovian, its coefficients are not bounded and the diffusion matrix is degenerate. Nevertheless, the specific form of the diffusion matrix and the nonlinearity imply the non-degeneracy of the Malliavin matrix and then the existence and smoothness of the density. In order to obtain a lower bound for the density, the known results do not apply. However, our approach follows the main idea consisting in discretizing the interval time and developing a recursive method. To this aim, we prove and use refined results on conditional Malliavin calculus. The lower bound implies the positivity of the solution of the Landau equation, and partially answers to an analytical conjecture. We also obtain an upper bound for the density, which again leads to an unusual estimate due to the bad behavior of the coefficients.

Potential theory for hyperbolic SPDEs

We give general sufficient conditions which imply upper and lower bounds for the probability that a multiparameter process hits a given set E in terms of a capacity of E related to the process. This extends a result of Khoshnevisan and Shi [Ann. Probab. 27 (1999) 1135-1159], where estimates for the hitting probabilities of the (N,d) Brownian sheet in terms of the (d-2N) Newtonian capacity are obtained, and readily applies to a wide class of Gaussian processes. Using Malliavin calculus and, in particular, a result of Kohatsu-Higa [Probab. Theory Related Fields 126 (2003) 421-457], we apply these general results to the solution of a system of d nonlinear hyperbolic stochastic partial differential equations with two variables. We show that under standard hypotheses on the coefficients, the hitting probabilities of this solution are bounded above and below by constants times the (d-4) Newtonian capacity. As a consequence, we characterize polar sets for this process and prove that the Hausdorff dimension of its range is min(d,4) a.s.
