Orders that are Étale-Locally Isomorphic

Let $R$ be a semilocal Dedekind domain with fraction field $F$. We show that two hereditary $R$-orders in central simple $F$-algebras which become isomorphic after tensoring with $F$ and with some faithfully flat étale $R$-algebra are isomorphic. On the other hand, this fails for hereditary orders with involution. The latter stands in contrast to a result of the first two authors, who proved this statement for hermitian forms over hereditary $R$-orders with involution. The results can be restated by means of étale cohomology and can be seen as variations of the Grothendieck--Serre conjecture on principal homogeneous bundles of reductive group schemes. Connections with Bruhat--Tits theory are also discussed.

Rationally Isomorphic Hermitian Forms and Torsors of Some Non-Reductive Groups

Let $R$ be a semilocal Dedekind domain. Under certain assumptions, we show that two (not necessarily unimodular) hermitian forms over an $R$-algebra with involution, which are rationally ismorphic and have isomorphic semisimple coradicals, are in fact isomorphic. The same result is also obtained for quadratic forms equipped with an action of a finite group. The results have cohomological restatements that resemble the Grothendieck--Serre conjecture, except the group schemes involved are not reductive. We show that these group schemes are closely related to group schemes arising in Bruhat--Tits theory.

Patching and Weak Approximation in Isometry Groups

Let $R$ be a semilocal principal ideal domain. Two algebraic objects over $R$ in which scalar extension makes sense (e.g. quadratic spaces) are said to be of the same genus if they become isomorphic after extending scalars to all completions of $R$ and its fraction field. We prove that the number of isomorphism classes in the genus of unimodular quadratic spaces over (non necessarily commutative) $R$-orders is always a finite power of $2$, and under further assumptions, e.g. that the order is hereditary, this number is $1$. The same result is also shown for related objects, e.g. systems of sesquilinear forms. A key ingredient in the proof is a weak approximation theorem for groups of isometries, which is valid over any (topological) base field, and even over semilocal base rings. The appendix proves that the isometry group of a quadratic space over an $R$-order with involution can be regarded as a smooth affine group scheme under mild assumptions.

Embeddings of maximal tori in classical groups and explicit Brauer-Manin obstruction

Embeddings of maximal tori into classical groups over global fields of characteristic not 2 are the subject matter of several recent papers, with special attention to the Hasse principle. The present paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for this embedding problem, and in particular for the Hasse principle to hold. Using work of Borovoi, this is interpreted as a Brauer-Manin type obstruction.

Hermitian Categories, Extension of Scalars and Systems of Sesquilinear Forms

We prove that the category of systems of sesquilinear forms over a given hermitian category is equivalent to the category of unimodular 1-hermitian forms over another hermitian category. The sesquilinear forms are not required to be unimodular or defined on a reflexive object (i.e. the standard map from the object to its double dual is not assumed to be bijective), and the forms in the system can be defined with respect to different hermitian structures on the given category. This extends a result obtained by E. Bayer-Fluckiger and D. Moldovan. We use the equivalence to define a Witt ring of sesquilinear forms over a hermitian category, and also to generalize various results (e.g.: Witt's Cancelation Theorem, Springer's Theorem, the weak Hasse principle, finiteness of genus) to systems of sesquilinear forms over hermitian categories.

Isometries of quadratic spaces

Let k be a field of characteristic not 2, let q be a quadratic space over k and let f be an irreducible polynomial with coefficients in k. In 1969, Milnor raised the following question : how can we decide whether q has an isometry with minimal polynomial f ? We give an answer to this question in the case of global fields. A more general version of the question is also considered.

Sesquilinear forms over rings with involution

Many classical results concerning quadratic forms have been extended to forms over algebras with involution. However, not much is known in the case of forms without any symmetry property. The present paper will establish Witt cancellation and base change results, as well as some local-global and finiteness results in this context.

Hasse Principle for G-quadratic forms

Let k be a global field of characteristic not 2. The classical Hasse-Minkowski theorem states that if two quadratic forms become isomorphic over all the completions of k, then they are isomorphic over k as well. It is natural to ask whether this is also true for G-quadratic forms, where G is a finite group. In the case of number fields the Hasse principle for G-quadratic forms does not hold in general, as shown by Jorge Morales. The aim of this paper is to study this question when k is a global field of positive characteristic. We give a sufficient criterion for the Hasse principle to hold, and also counter examples : note that these are of different nature than those for number fields.

Hermitian Categories, extension of scalars and systems of hermitian forms

In this paper we define a notion of Witt group for sesquilinear forms in hermitian categories, which in turn provides a notion of Witt group for sesquilinear forms over rings with involution. We also study the extension of scalars for K-linear hermitian categories, where K is a field of characteristic not 2. We finally extend several results concerning sesquilinear forms to the setting of systems of such forms.
