Hydrodynamics shapes annularity in coral reefs via scale-free growth processes

Atolls are traditionally explained as the result of coral reefs accreting around volcanic islands followed by gradual subsidence, yielding a hollow, ring-shaped rim that can extend for kilometres. However, satellite imagery shows that similar annular outlines also appear in much smaller patch reefs, where atoll-forming geological pathways do not apply. In some systems, small annular patches occur within the lagoons of larger atolls, producing nested ring-like patterns. The recurrence of annularity across such contrasting contexts and scales suggests that shared, self-organising processes may also contribute to shaping these reefs. Here, we test whether interactions between reef growth and marine currents can generate annular forms and explain their cross-scale geometric regularities. We develop a numerical model in which coral growth follows simple process-based rules, with local colonisation and mortality depending on resource supply and hydrodynamic stress, and water flow resolved using fluid dynamics. Simulations show that this coupling robustly produces ring-like patch reefs and atoll-like configurations across spatial scales, consistent with observed morphologies. Beyond qualitative agreement, the emergent reefs reproduce key geometric signatures reported in global datasets, including scaling laws and fractal dimensions. Together, these results identify coral-current interactions as a plausible pathway to annular reef formation and a mechanistic explanation for scale-free reef geometry.

A mathematical model for inter-specific seagrass interactions: reproducing field observations for C. nodosa and C. prolifera

Seagrasses are vital organisms in coastal waters, and the drastic demise of their population in the last decades has worrying implications for marine ecosystems. Spatial models for seagrass meadows provide a mathematical framework to study their dynamical processes and emergent collective behavior. These models are crucial to predict the response of seagrasses to different global warming scenarios, analyze the resilience of existing seagrass distributions, and optimize restoration strategies. In this article, we propose a model that includes interactions among different species based on the clonal growth of seagrasses. We present a theoretical analysis of the model considering the specific case of the seagrass-seaweed interaction between {\it Cymodocea nodosa} and {\it Caulerpa prolifera}. Our simulations successfully reproduce field observations of shoot densities in mixed meadows in the Ebro River Delta in the Mediterranean Sea. Besides, the proposed model allows us to investigate the possible underlying mechanisms that mediate the interaction among the two macrophytes.

The effect of global warming on Western Mediterranean seagrasses: towards an agent-based modelling approach

Seagrasses are key structural elements in coastal ecosystems, and studying how temperature affects these species is crucial to anticipate the implications of global warming. In this work, we use an empirically-based numerical model to study the combined dynamics of {\it Posidonia oceanica} and {\it Cymodocea nodosa} and their resilience to sea warming. The model is parametrised using seagrass growth rates measured at the Western Mediterranean Sea. Under favorable growth conditions, our simulations predict the emergence of a coexistence region at the front between mono-specific meadows. This region can be characterised by its width and local shoot densities, which are found to depend on the coupling parameter between {\it Posidonia oceanica} and {\it Cymodocea nodosa} species. Such regions have been empirically observed in Ses Olles de Son Saura (Balearic Islands, Western Mediterranean Sea). A comparison between the field measurements at the study site with the model predictions has been used to fit the value of the coupling parameter. Field data also relates the width of the coexistence region to the average length of {\it Posidonia oceanica} leaves at the front. Remarkably, a linear relationship is found between the coupling parameter and the leaf length. In the presence of sea warming, the model predicts an exponential decay in the population of {\it Posidonia oceanica}, which is highly sensitive to temperature. This behaviour is a direct consequence of the clonal nature of the plant and can be characterised by the model parameters. Considering a scenario of high greenhouse emissions, our model forecasts that {\it Posidonia oceanica} meadows will lose 70$\%$ of their population by the year $2050$. {\it Cymodocea nodosa}, with higher thermal resilience, acts as an opportunistic species conquering the space left by the degraded {\it Posidonia oceanica}.

General solutions in Chern-Simons gravity and $T \bar T$-deformations

We find the most general solution to Chern-Simons AdS$_3$ gravity in Fefferman-Graham gauge. The connections are equivalent to geometries that have a non-trivial curved boundary, characterized by a 2-dimensional vielbein and a spin connection. We define a variational principle for Dirichlet boundary conditions and find the boundary stress tensor in the Chern-Simons formalism. Using this variational principle as the departure point, we show how to treat other choices of boundary conditions in this formalism, such as, including the mixed boundary conditions corresponding to a $T \bar T$-deformation.

Wilson Lines and Ishibashi States in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

We provide a refined interpretation of a gravitational Wilson line in AdS$_3$ in terms of Ishibashi states in the dual CFT$_2$. Our strategy is to give a method to evaluate the Wilson line that accounts for all the information contained in the representation, and clarify the role of boundary conditions at the endpoints of the line operator. This gives a novel way to explore and reconstruct the local bulk dynamics which we discuss. We also compare our findings with other interpretations of Ishibashi states in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$.

Chaotic strings in AdS/CFT

Holographic theories with classical gravity duals are maximally chaotic; i.e., they saturate the universal bound on the rate of growth of chaos. It is interesting to ask whether this property is true only for leading large $N$ correlators or if it can show up elsewhere. In this Letter we consider the simplest setup to tackle this question: a Brownian particle coupled to a thermal ensemble. We find that the four-point out-of-time-order correlator that diagnoses chaos initially grows at an exponential rate that saturates the chaos bound, i.e., with a Lyapunov exponent $λ_L=2π/β$. However, the scrambling time is parametrically smaller than for plasma excitations, $t_*\simβ\log \sqrtλ$ instead of $t_*\simβ\log N^2$. Our result shows that, at least in certain cases, maximal chaos can be attained in the probe sector without the explicit need of gravitational degrees of freedom.

Geodesic Diagrams, Gravitational Interactions & OPE Structures

We give a systematic procedure to evaluate conformal partial waves involving symmetric tensors for an arbitrary CFT$_d$ using geodesic Witten diagrams in AdS$_{d+1}$. Using this procedure we discuss how to draw a line between the tensor structures in the CFT and cubic interactions in AdS. We contrast this map to known results using three-point Witten diagrams: the maps obtained via volume versus geodesic integrals differ. Despite these differences, we show how to decompose four-point exchange Witten diagrams in terms of geodesic diagrams, and we discuss the product expansion of local bulk fields in AdS.

Unravelling Holographic Entanglement Entropy in Higher Spin Theories

There are two proposals that compute holographic entanglement entropy in AdS$_3$ higher spin theories based on $SL(N,\mathbb{R})$ Chern-Simons theory. We show explicitly that these two proposals are equivalent. We also designed two methods that solve systematically the equations for arbitrary $N$. For finite charge backgrounds in AdS$_3$, we find exact agreement between our expressions and the short interval correction of the entanglement entropy for an excited state in a CFT$_2$.

Eternal Higher Spin Black Holes: a Thermofield Interpretation

We study Lorentzian eternal black holes in the Chern-Simons sector of AdS$_3$ higher spin gravity. We probe such black holes using bulk Wilson lines and motivate new regularity conditions that must be obeyed by the bulk connections in order for the geometry to be consistent with an interpretation as a thermofield state in the dual CFT$_2$. We demonstrate that any higher spin black hole may be placed in a gauge that satisfies these conditions: this is the Chern-Simons analogue of the construction of Kruskal coordinates that permit passage through the black hole horizon. We also argue that the Wilson line provides a higher-spin notion of causality in higher spin gravity that can be used to associate a Penrose diagram with the black hole. We present some applications of the formalism, including a study of the time-dependent entanglement entropy arising from the higher spin black hole interior and evidence for an emergent AdS$_2$ region in the extremal limit.
