The singular Weinstein conjecture

In this article, we investigate Reeb dynamics on $b^m$-contact manifolds, previously introduced in [MiO], which are contact away from a hypersurface $Z$ but satisfy certain transversality conditions on $Z$. The study of these contact structures is motivated by that of contact manifolds with boundary. The search of periodic Reeb orbits on those manifolds thereby starts with a generalization of the well-known Weinstein conjecture. Contrary to the initial expectations, examples of compact $b^m$-contact manifolds without periodic Reeb orbits outside $Z$ are provided. Furthermore, we prove that in dimension $3$, there are always infinitely many periodic orbits on the critical set if it is compact. We prove that traps for the $b^m$-Reeb flow exist in any dimension. This investigation goes hand-in-hand with the Weinstein conjecture on non-compact manifolds having compact ends of convex type. In particular, we extend Hofer's arguments to open overtwisted contact manifolds that are $\mathbb R^+$-invariant in the open ends, obtaining as a corollary the existence of periodic $b^m$-Reeb orbits away from the critical set. The study of $b^m$-Reeb dynamics is motivated by well-known problems in fluid dynamics and celestial mechanics, where those geometric structures naturally appear. In particular, we prove that the dynamics on positive energy level-sets in the restricted planar circular three-body problem are described by the Reeb vector field of a $b^3$-contact form that admits an infinite number of periodic orbits at the critical set.

Integrable systems and closed one forms

In the first part of this paper we revisit a classical topological theorem by Tischler (1970) and deduce a topological result about compact manifolds admitting a set of independent closed forms proving that the manifold is a fibration over a torus. As an application we reprove the Liouville theorem for integrable systems asserting that the invariant sets or compact connected fibers of a regular integrable system are tori. We give a new proof of this theorem (including the non-commutative version) for symplectic and more generally Poisson manifolds.

On geometric quantization of $b^m$-symplectic manifolds

We study the formal geometric quantization of $b^m$-symplectic manifolds equipped with Hamiltonian actions of a torus $T$ with nonzero leading modular weight. The resulting virtual $T$-modules are finite dimensional when $m$ is odd, as in [GMW2]; when $m$ is even, these virtual modules are not finite dimensional, and we compute the asymptotics of the representations for large weight.

Euler flows and singular geometric structures

Tichler proved that a manifold admitting a smooth closed one-form fibers over a circle. More generally a manifold admitting $k$ independent closed one-forms fibers over a torus $T^k$. In this article we explain a version of this construction for manifolds with boundary using the techniques of $b$-calculus. We explore new applications of this idea to Fluid Dynamics and more concretely in the study of stationary solutions of the Euler equations. In the study of Euler flows on manifolds, two dichotomic situations appear. For the first one, in which the Bernoulli function is not constant, we provide a new proof of Arnold's structure theorem and describe $b$-symplectic structures on some of the singular sets of the Bernoulli function. When the Bernoulli function is constant, a correspondence between contact structures with singularities and what we call $b$-Beltrami fields is established, thus mimicking the classical correspondence between Beltrami fields and contact structures. These results provide a new technique to analyze the geometry of steady fluid flows on non-compact manifolds with cylindrical ends.

On the volume elements of a manifold with transverse zeroes

Moser proved in 1965 in his seminal paper that two volume forms on a compact manifold can be conjugated by a diffeomorphism, that is to say they are equivalent, if and only if their associated cohomology classes in the top cohomology group of a manifold coincide. In particular, this yields a classification of compact symplectic surfaces in terms of De Rham cohomology. In this paper we generalize these results for volume forms admitting transversal zeroes. In this case there is also a cohomology capturing the classification: the relative cohomology with respect to the set of critical hypersurface. We compare this classification scheme with the classification of Poisson structures on surfaces which are symplectic away from a hypersurface where they fulfill a transversality assumption ($b$-Poisson structures). We do this using the desingularization technique introduced by Guillemin-Miranda-Weitsman and extend it to $b^m$-Nambu structures.

Singular fibers of the Gelfand--Cetlin system on $\mathfrak{u}(n)^*$

In this paper, we show that every singular fiber of the Gelfand--Cetlin system on coadjoint orbits of unitary groups is a smooth isotropic submanifold which is diffeomorphic to a $2$-stage quotient of a compact Lie group by free actions of two other compact Lie groups. In many cases, these singular fibers can be shown to be homogeneous spaces or even diffeomorphic to compact Lie groups. We also give a combinatorial formula for computing the dimensions of all singular fibers, and give a detailed description of these singular fibers in many cases, including the so-called (multi-)diamond singularities. These (multi-)diamond singular fibers are degenerate for the Gelfand--Cetlin system, but they are Lagrangian submanifolds diffeomorphic to direct products of special unitary groups and tori. Our methods of study are based on different ideas involving complex ellipsoids, Lie groupoids, and also general ideas coming from the theory of singularities of integrable Hamiltonian systems.

The geometry of E-manifolds

Motivated by the study of symplectic Lie algebroids, we study a describe a type of algebroid (called an $E$-tangent bundle) which is particularly well-suited to study of singular differential forms and their cohomology. This setting generalizes the study of $b$-symplectic manifolds, foliated manifolds, and a wide class of Poisson manifolds. We generalize Moser's theorem to this setting, and use it to construct symplectomorphisms between singular symplectic forms. We give applications of this machinery (including the study of Poisson cohomology), and study specific examples of a few of them in depth.

Zeroth Poisson homology, foliated cohomology and perfect Poisson manifolds

We prove that for regular Poisson manifolds, the zeroth homology group is isomorphic to the top foliated cohomology group and we give some applications. In particular, we show that for regular unimodular Poisson manifolds top Poisson and foliated cohomology groups are isomorphic. Inspired by the symplectic setting, we define what is a perfect Poisson manifold. We use these Poisson homology computations to provide families of perfect Poisson manifolds.

Geometric quantization of semitoric systems and almost toric manifolds

Kostant gave a model for the real geometric quantization associated to polarizations via the cohomology associated to the sheaf of flat sections of a pre-quantum line bundle. This model is well-adapted for real polarizations given by integrable systems and toric manifolds. In the latter case, the cohomology can be computed counting integral points inside the associated Delzant polytope. In this article we extend Kostant's geometric quantization to semitoric integrable systems and almost toric manifolds. In these cases the dimension of the acting torus is smaller than half of the dimension of the manifold. In particular, we compute the cohomology groups associated to the geometric quantization if the real polarization is the one associated to an integrable system with focus-focus type singularities in dimension four. As application we determine models for the geometric quantization of K3 surfaces, a spin-spin system, the spherical pendulum, and a spin-oscillator system under this scheme.

Desingularizing $b^m$-symplectic structures

A $2n$-dimensional Poisson manifold $(M ,Π)$ is said to be $b^m$-symplectic if it is symplectic on the complement of a hypersurface $Z$ and has a simple Darboux canonical form at points of $Z$ which we will describe below. In this paper we will discuss a desingularization procedure which, for $m$ even, converts $Π$ into a family of symplectic forms $ω_ε$ having the property that $ω_ε$ is equal to the $b^m$-symplectic form dual to $Π$ outside an $ε$-neighborhood of $Z$ and, in addition, converges to this form as $ε$ tends to zero in a sense that will be made precise in the theorem below. We will then use this construction to show that a number of somewhat mysterious properties of $b^m$-manifolds can be more clearly understood by viewing them as limits of analogous properties of the $ω_ε$'s. We will also prove versions of these results for $m$ odd; however, in the odd case the family $ω_ε$ has to be replaced by a family of folded symplectic forms.

An Invitation to Singular Symplectic Geometry

In this paper we analyze in detail a collection of motivating examples to consider $b^m$-symplectic forms and folded-type symplectic structures. In particular, we provide models in Celestial Mechanics for every $b^m$-symplectic structure. At the end of the paper, we introduce the odd-dimensional analogue to $b$-symplectic manifolds: $b$-contact manifolds.

Equivariant classification of $b^m$-symplectic surfaces and Nambu structures

In this paper we extend the classification scheme in [S] for $b^m$-symplectic surfaces and, more generally, $b^m$-Nambu structures to the equivariant setting. When the compact group is the group of deck-transformations of an orientable covering, this yields the classification of these objects for non-orientable surfaces. The paper also includes recipes to construct $b^m$-symplectic structures on surfaces. Feasibility of such constructions depends on orientability and on the colorability of an associated graph. The desingularization technique in [GMW] is revisited for surfaces and the compatibility with this classification scheme is analyzed. We recast the strategy used in [Mt] to classify stable Nambu structures of top degree on orientable manifolds to classify $b^m$-Nambu structures (not necessarily oriented) using the language of $b^m$-cohomology. The paper ends up with an equivariant classification theorem of $b^m$-Nambu structures of top degree.

On geometric quantization of $b$-symplectic manifolds

We study a notion of pre-quantization for $b$-symplectic manifolds. We use it to construct a formal geometric quantization of $b$-symplectic manifolds equipped with Hamiltonian torus actions with nonzero modular weight. We show that these quantizations are finite dimensional $T$-modules.

Non-commutative integrable systems on $b$-symplectic manifolds

In this paper we study non-commutative integrable systems on $b$-Poisson manifolds. One important source of examples (and motivation) of such systems comes from considering non-commutative systems on manifolds with boundary having the right asymptotics on the boundary. In this paper we describe this and other examples and we prove an action-angle theorem for non-commutative integrable systems on a $b$-symplectic manifold in a neighbourhood of a Liouville torus inside the critical set of the Poisson structure associated to the $b$-symplectic structure.

Cotangent models for integrable systems

We associate cotangent models to a neighbourhood of a Liouville torus in symplectic and Poisson manifolds focusing on a special class called $b$-Poisson/$b$-symplectic manifolds. The semilocal equivalence with such models uses the corresponding action-angle coordinate theorems in these settings: the theorem of Liouville-Mineur-Arnold [A74] for symplectic manifolds and an action-angle theorem for regular Liouville tori in Poisson manifolds [LMV11]. Our models comprise regular Liouville tori of Poisson manifolds but also consider the Liouville tori on the singular locus of a $b$-Poisson manifold. For this latter class of Poisson structures we define a twisted cotangent model. The equivalence with this twisted cotangent model is given by an action-angle theorem recently proved in [KMS16]. This viewpoint of cotangent models provides a new machinery to construct examples of integrable systems, which are especially valuable in the $b$-symplectic case where not many sources of examples are known. At the end of the paper we introduce non-degenerate singularities as lifted cotangent models on $b$-symplectic manifolds and discuss some generalizations of these models to general Poisson manifolds.

Convexity for Hamiltonian torus actions on $b$-symplectic manifolds

In [GMPS] we proved that the moment map image of a $b$-symplectic toric manifold is a convex $b$-polytope. In this paper we obtain convexity results for the more general case of non-toric hamiltonian torus actions on $b$-symplectic manifolds. The modular weights of the action on the connected components of the exceptional hypersurface play a fundamental role: either they are all zero and the moment map behaves as in classic symplectic one, or they are all nonzero and the moment map behaves as in the toric $b$-symplectic case studied in [GMPS].

Weakly Hamiltonian actions

In this paper we generalize constructions of non-commutative integrable systems to the context of weakly Hamiltonian actions on Poisson manifolds. In particular we prove that abelian weakly Hamiltonian actions on symplectic manifolds split into Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian factors, and explore generalizations in the Poisson setting.
