Smoothness dependent stability in corrosion detection

We consider the stability issue for the determination of a linear corrosion in a conductor by a single electrostatic measurement. We established a global log-log type stability when the corroded boundary is simply Lipschitz. We also improve such a result obtaining a global log stability by assuming that the damaged boundary is $C^{1,1}$-smooth.

Discretized Tikhonov regularization for Robin boundaries localization

We deal with a boundary detection problem arising in nondestructive testing of materials. The problem consists in recovering an unknown portion of the boundary, where a Robin condition is satisfied, with the use of a Cauchy data pair collected on the accessible part of the boundary. We combine a linearization argument with a Tikhonov regularization approach for the local reconstruction of the unknown defect. Moreover, we discuss the regularization parameter choice by means of the so called balancing principle and we present some numerical tests that show the efficiency of our method.

Cracks with impedance, stable determination from boundary data

We discuss the inverse problem of determining the possible presence of an (n-1)-dimensional crack Σin an n-dimensional body Ωwith n > 2 when the so-called Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is given on the boundary of Ω. In combination with quantitative unique continuation techniques, an optimal single-logarithm stability estimate is proven by using the singular solutions method. Our arguments also apply when the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map or the local versions of the D-N and the N-D map are available.

Stable determination of surface impedance on a rough obstacle by far field data

We treat the stability of determining the boundary impedance of an obstacle by scattering data, with a single incident field. A previous result by Sincich (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 38, (2006), 434-451) showed a log stability when the boundary of the obstacle is assumed to be C^{1,1}-smooth. We prove that, when the obstacle boundary is merely Lipschitz, a log-log type stability still holds.

Solving elliptic Cauchy problems and the identification of nonlinear corrosion

We deal with an inverse problem arising in corrosion detection. The presence of corrosion damage is modeled by a nonlinear boundary condition on the inaccessible portion of the metal specimen. We propose a method for the approximate reconstruction of such a nonlinearity. A crucial step of this procedure, which encapsulates the major cause of the ill-posedness of the problem, consists of the solution of a Cauchy problem for an elliptic equation. For this purpose we propose an SVD approach.
