Gamified Requirement Elicitation for a Multi-Modal Decision Support System. The Case of SYNCHROMODE

SYNCHROMODE is a Horizon Europe project that aims to develop a data-driven ICT toolbox for improving the management of transport operations from a multimodal perspective. This is, in essence, a multimodal decision support system that will take the form of interconnected pieces of software. Developing complex systems requires careful planning and management. Their "life cycle" consists of several phases, starting with the critical stage of requirement elicitation, which establishes the system's foundational needs and expectations. This paper focuses on the requirement elicitation phase of core interconnected services that are to be offered through the SYNCHROMODE toolbox. Elicitation is achieved both through traditional methods and specifically through the use of use cases as well as through the use of gamification. During the design phase of the toolbox and as a result of the use cases a set of predefined requirements were identified. Moreover, a requirement elicitation serious game was designed and developed. Subsequently, the game was presented in person during a physical workshop, which took place in Thessaloniki in October 2023, to a diverse range of stakeholders, including experts in traffic management, public transport authorities, MaaS providers, first responders, ITS technology providers, and local authorities. Both requirement elicitation processes are summarized in the context of this paper. Finally, the requirements generated through traditional means and through gamification are then analyzed and compared.

All you need is data: the added value of National Access Points as backbone European ITS data exchange infrastructures

Intelligent Transport Systems are crucial in the digital transformation of transportation. The EC mandates the establishment of National Access Points (NAPs) in each Member State, serving as common national interfaces for ITS data exchange. While progress has been made in standardizing NAP data, integration with operational ITS practices remain limited. This paper presents five NAP use cases from the NAPCORE (National Access Point Coordination Organization for Europe) CEF funded project. The first one outlines a National Virtual Traffic Management Center offering real time visualized KPIs supporting motorway traffic operations. The second focuses on NAP enabled Cooperative ITS and dynamic traffic management services. Next use case involves a Pan European interface, providing visualizations of data availability. The fourth use case enhances the digitization of traffic management plans, among different TMC. Finally, the fifth use case demonstrates a technical interface combining NAP traffic data with meteorological information for KPIs on extreme weather impacts on traffic.

Assessing the Readiness of Greece for Autonomous Vehicle Technologies

Despite the debate regarding the timeframe and rate of penetration of Autonomous Vehicles, their potential benefits and implications have been widely recognized. Therefore, assessing the readiness of individual countries to adopt such technologies and adapt to their introduction is of particular importance. This paper aims to enrich our understanding of EU readiness regarding the introduction of autonomous vehicle technologies by assessing the case of Greece. Thus, through a literature review, the criteria upon which such an assessment should be based are established and analyzed. Subsequently, the case of Greece is assessed based on those criteria by finding relevant sources that support and justify any assessment. Regardless of the outcome concerning the readiness of Greece, such an assessment should help identify areas in which focus should be given in order to ensure a smoother transition to such technologies. This contribution is expected to assist policy makers in Greece.

Enabling older citizens safe mobility. The ACTIVAGE approach

We live in an ever-aging world. The percentage of older citizens increases in modern societies as older citizens represent the 19.20% of the general population. In Greece, an increase of almost 7% of older citizens has been observed in the last twenty years. As old age never comes alone, age-related impairments should be considered in the effort to provide safe transport conditions for them. It is of importance that transportation services have to meet the special requirements and needs of older citizens. European Union, through the ACTIVAGE project, aims at using the Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in favor of older citizens. In the framework of this project, the ACTIVAGE Safe Mobility Platform (ASMP) has been designed. Therefore, older citizens and their relatives have access to information regarding their travels. In the context of this study, an extensive description of the ASMP and the services offered through it is provided.

Overview of C-ITS Deployment Projects in Europe and USA

Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) are technologies that enable vehicles to communicate with each other and with the road infrastructure. These innovative technologies enable road users and traffic managers to share useful information, assisting the coordination of their actions. During the last years various initiatives providing policy rules for C-ITS deployment and a large number of projects demonstrating C-ITS implementation have taken place in Europe and USA. However, the identification of the status of C-ITS deployment remains ambiguous at binational level. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the European and US milestones, that have been reached so far in the field of C-ITS, by identifying and reporting the policy framework, as well as the projects concerning C-ITS deployment in Europe and USA.

Harmonization and interoperability of C-ITS Architectures in Europe and USA

Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) constitute technologies which enable vehicles to communicate with each other and/ or with the infrastructure. C-ITS include systems and services which use different components, in order to share and exchange information via diverse communication interfaces. Since various C-ITS deployment initiatives have taken place during the last years all over the world, the necessity to identify a framework, in order to ensure interoperability of C-ITS across borders is currently in sight constituting a challenging task. Such an approach should rely on the deployment of C-ITS services based on common architectures and standards, pursuing harmonization and interoperability. The current paper aims to present the work conducted in the context of a United States (US) - European Commission (EC) collaboration on the development of harmonized and interoperable C-ITS architectures.

A microsimulation approach for the impact assessment of a Vehicle-to-Infrastructure based Road Hazard Warning system

Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) constitute technologies which enable vehicles to communicate with each other and with road infrastructure. Verification or testing is required for C-ITS applications, in order to assess their impact on traffic operation. In this work, a microscopic traffic simulation approach is used, to evaluate the impact of Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) technologies in the context of a road traffic accident. Specifically, the methodology is implemented to explicitly models vehicles collisions, Road Hazard Warning (RHW), Emergency Electronic Brake Light (EEBL) warnings and the resulting driver behavior. Moreover, a new gap control mechanism is adopted, to improve safety by advising vehicles in hazard lane to increase their headways with respect to their preceding vehicle, so that they can avoid a collision. Perfect communication links to all vehicles are assumed. The study findings indicate that the proposed V2I hazard warning strategy has a positive impact on traffic flow safety and efficiency.

National Access Points for Intelligent Transport Systems Data: From Conceptualization to Benefits Recognition and Exploitation

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) constitute a core representative of a paradigm shift in the transport sector. The extent to which the transport sector has adapted itself to this digital era relies considerably on the availability of suitable and reliable data. Currently, several data-related limitations, such as the scarcity of available datasets, hinder the deployment of ITS services. Such limitations may be overcome with the deployment of properly designed data exchange platforms that enable a seamless life-cycle of data harvesting, processing, and sharing. The European Union recognizing the potential benefits of such platforms has, through the relevant Delegated Regulations, proposed the development of a National Access Point (NAP) by each individual Member State. This paper aims to ascertain the role of a NAP within the ITS ecosystem, to investigate methodologies used in designing such platforms, and, through the drafting of an extended use case, showcase a NAP operational process and associate possible benefits with specific steps of it.

Training Opportunities for Intelligent Transport Systems and Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) are of high significance, mainly due to the benefits they have in terms of operation of the transport network. Despite ITS and C-ITS importance in the operation of the transport network, there is a major knowledge gap regarding their development, way of operation and significance worldwide and especially among the responsible for their deployment public authorities. In order for such fragmentations to be tackled, an online training platform concerning the operation and impacts of ITS and C-ITS has been designed in the framework of the European Union Horizon 2020 funded CAPITAL project. In order for the proper design of the CAPITAL Online Training Platform, two main approaches have been studied: capacity building and massive open online courses. The present study provides insight regarding the design and the context of the CAPITAL Online Training Platform.

C-ITS bundling for integrated traffic management

Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) enable vehicles communication with each other (Vehicle-to-Vehicle, V2V) and with roadside infrastructure (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure, V2I). In the context of traffic efficiency, C-ITS technologies could assist in road network status visualization and monitoring, through data exchange, improving this way traffic control organization and traffic management implementation. Bundling is the provision of several C-ITS services as one combined service. The purpose of bundling is to harvest the usability of C-ITS services by developing a strategy for the operation and exploitation of services in real-time and within varying geographical areas. Two different dimensions of bundling have been recognized covering: 1) end-users, and 2) operators-managers. The objective of the operators-managers dimension is the integration of C-ITS services in operational traffic management. This work spotlights the operators-managers bundling dimension, presenting a framework based on a step-by-step approach for integrating C-ITS services in traditional traffic management.
