Regularized Distributed MPC for UAV Networks: Stabilizing Coupled Motion and Hybrid Beam Alignment

This letter investigates the coupled control problem in UAV networks utilizing high-frequency hybrid beamsteering. While phased arrays enable rapid electronic scanning, their finite Field of View (FoV) imposes a fundamental constraint that necessitates active mechanical steering of the airframe to maintain connectivity. We propose a decentralized Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework that jointly optimizes trajectory and heading to maximize network sum-capacity subject to safety constraints. Addressing the numerical instability caused by fast-fading channel nulls, we introduce a regularized surrogate cost function based on discrete spatial smoothing. We analytically prove that this approximation bounds the cost curvature, restoring the Lipschitz continuity of the gradient. Crucially, we derive a sufficient condition linking this Lipschitz constant to the controller gain, guaranteeing the contraction and linear convergence of the distributed best-response dynamics. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm effectively navigates the trade-off between electronic beam tracking and kinematic safety, significantly systematically outperforming velocity-aligned baselines.

Receiving RISs: Enabling Channel Estimation and Autonomous Configuration

This chapter focuses on a hardware architecture for semi-passive Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) and investigates its consideration for boosting the performance of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication systems. The architecture incorporates a single or multiple radio-frequency chains to receive pilot signals via tunable absorption phase profiles realized by the metasurface front end, as well as a controller encompassing a baseband processing unit to carry out channel estimation, and consequently, the optimization of the RIS reflection coefficients. A novel channel estimation protocol, according to which the RIS receives non-orthogonal training pilot sequences from two multi-antenna terminals via tunable absorption phase profiles, and then, estimates the respective channels via its signal processing unit, is presented. The channel estimates are particularly used by the RIS controller to design the capacity-achieving reflection phase configuration of the metasurface front end. The proposed channel estimation algorithm, which is based on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM), profits from the RIS random spatial absorption sampling to capture the entire signal space, and exploits the beamspace sparsity and low-rank properties of extremely large MIMO channels, which is particularly relevant for communication systems at the FR3 band and above. Our extensive numerical investigations showcase the superiority of the proposed channel estimation technique over benchmark schemes for various system and RIS hardware configuration parameters, as well as the effectiveness of using channel estimates at the RIS side to dynamically optimize the possibly phase-quantized reflection coefficients of its unit elements.

SQuADDS: A validated design database and simulation workflow for superconducting qubit design

We present an open-source database of superconducting quantum device designs that may be used as the starting point for customized devices. Each design can be generated programmatically using the open-source Qiskit Metal package, and simulated using finite-element electromagnetic solvers. We present a robust workflow for achieving high accuracy on design simulations. Many designs in the database are experimentally validated, showing excellent agreement between simulated and measured parameters. Our database includes a front-end interface that allows users to generate ``best-guess'' designs based on desired circuit parameters. This project lowers the barrier to entry for research groups seeking to make a new class of devices by providing them a well-characterized starting point from which to refine their designs.

Beating the Ramsey limit on sensing with deterministic qubit control

Quantum sensors promise revolutionary advances in medical imaging, energy production, mass detection, geodesy, foundational physics research, and a host of other fields. In many sensors, the signal takes the form of a changing qubit frequency, which is detected with an interference measurement. Unfortunately, environmental noise decoheres the qubit state, reducing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here we introduce a protocol for enhancing the sensitivity of a measurement of a qubit's frequency in the presence of decoherence. We use a continuous drive to stabilize one component of the qubit's Bloch vector, enhancing the effect of a small static frequency shift. We demonstrate our protocol on a superconducting qubit, enhancing SNR per measurement shot by 1.65$\times$ and SNR per qubit evolution time by 1.09$\times$ compared to standard Ramsey interferometry. We explore the protocol theoretically and numerically, finding maximum enhancements of 1.96$\times$ and 1.18$\times$, respectively. We also show that the protocol is robust to parameter miscalibrations. Our protocol provides an unconditional enhancement in signal-to-noise ratio compared to standard Ramsey interferometry. It requires no feedback and no extra control or measurement resources, and can be immediately applied in a wide variety of quantum computing and quantum sensor technologies to enhance their sensitivities.

Time-Domain Channel Estimation for Extremely Large MIMO THz Communication Systems Under Dual-Wideband Fading Conditions

In this paper, we study the problem of extremely large (XL) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel estimation in the terahertz (THz) frequency band, considering the presence of propagation delays across the entire array apertures at both communication ends, which naturally leads to frequency selectivity. This problem is known as beam squint and may be pronounced when communications are subject to multipath fading conditions. Multi-carrier (MC) transmission schemes, which are usually deployed in THz communication systems to address these issues, suffer from high peak-to-average power ratio, which is specifically dominant in this frequency band where low transmit power is mostly feasible. Furthermore, the frequency selectivity caused by severe molecular absorption in the THz band necessitates delicate consideration in MC system design. Motivated by the benefits of single-carrier (SC) waveforms for practical THz communication systems, diverging from the current dominant research trend on MC systems, we devise a novel channel estimation problem formulation in the time domain for SC XL MIMO systems subject to multipath signal propagation, spatial wideband effects, and molecular absorption. An efficient alternating minimization approach is presented to solve the proposed mixed-integer sparse problem formulation. The conducted extensive performance evaluation results validate that the proposed XL MIMO estimation scheme exhibits superior performance than conventional SC- and MC-based techniques, approaching the idealized lower bound.

On-demand driven dissipation for cavity reset and cooling

We present a superconducting circuit device that provides active, on-demand, tunable dissipation on a target mode of the electromagnetic field. Our device is based on a tunable "dissipator" that can be made lossy when tuned into resonance with a broadband filter mode. When driven parametrically, this dissipator induces loss on any mode coupled to it with energy detuning equal to the drive frequency. We demonstrate the use of this device to reset a superconducting qubit's readout cavity after a measurement, removing photons with a characteristic rate above $50\ μ\mathrm{s}^{-1}$. We also demonstrate that the dissipation can be driven constantly to simultaneously damp and cool the cavity, effectively eliminating thermal photon fluctuations as a relevant decoherence channel. Our results demonstrate the utility of our device as a modular tool for environmental engineering and entropy removal in circuit QED.

Master Equation Emulation and Coherence Preservation with Classical Control of a Superconducting Qubit

Open quantum systems are a topic of intense theoretical research. The use of master equations to model a system's evolution subject to an interaction with an external environment is one of the most successful theoretical paradigms. General experimental tools to study different open system realizations have been limited, and so it is highly desirable to develop experimental tools which emulate diverse master equation dynamics and give a way to test open systems theories. In this paper we demonstrate a systematic method for engineering specific system-environment interactions and emulating master equations of a particular form using classical stochastic noise. We also demonstrate that non-Markovian noise can be used as a resource to extend the coherence of a quantum system and counteract the adversarial effects of Markovian environments.

Covariance-Based Hybrid Beamforming for Spectrally Efficient Joint Radar-Communications

Joint radar-communications (JRC) is considered to be a vital technology in deploying the next generation systems, since its useful in decongestion of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum and utilising the same hardware resources for dual functions. Using JRC systems for dual function generates interference between both the operations which needs to be addressed in future standardization. Furthermore, JRC systems can be advanced by deploying hybrid beamforming which implements fewer number of RF chains than the number of transmit antennas. This paper designs a robust hybrid beamformer for minimizing the interference of a JRC transmitter via RF chain selection resulting into mutual information maximization. We consider a weighted mutual information for the dual function JRC system and implement a common analog beamformer for both the operations. The mutual information maximization problem is formulated which is non-convex and difficult to solve. The problem is simplified to convex form and solved using Dinkelbach approximation abased fractional programming. The performance of the optimal RF selection based proposed approach is evaluated, compared with baselines and its effectiveness is inferred via numerical results.

Flexible Hybrid Beamforming for Spectrally Efficient 6G Joint Radar-Communications

Joint radar-communications (JRC) benefits from multi-functionality of radar and communication operations using same hardware and radio frequency (RF) spectrum resources. Thus JRC systems possess very high potential to be employed into the sixth generation (6G) standards. This paper designs a flexible beamformer for multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) JRC with maximized spectral efficiency (SE). Hybrid beamforming is implemented which constitutes lesser number of RF chains than number of transmitter antennas. We jointly express JRC rate with communication and radar entities including a weighting factor which depicts the dominance of one operation over the other. The joint-SE based proposed method optimally selects the number of RF chains with flexible hynrid beamforming design. Furthermore, when the communication operation takes place the proposed method takes into account the interference occurring from the radar operation and vice-versa. Fractional programming based selection procedure is used for flexible beamforming and optimal number of RF chains while considering interference of each operation. Simulation results are presented and compared with different baselines to show effectiveness of the proposed flexible hybrid beamforming method.

Millimeter Wave Channel Estimation for Lens based Hybrid MIMO with Low Resolution ADCs

The high path loss associated with millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency communication can be compensated by large scale antenna arrays such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The hybrid beamforming architecture which uses fewer radio frequency chains is implemented to reduce power consumption and hardware complexity, while still supporting multi-stream communication. We propose an efficient expectation-maximization (EM)-based mmWave channel estimator for a lens-based hybrid MIMO system with low resolution sampling at the receiver. The lens-based beamformer is investigated to provide increased antenna gain and reduced implementation complexity as the conventional beam selection network is excluded. Low resolution sampling at the analog-to-digital converters is implemented for reduced power consumption. The proposed solution with a robust maximum a posteriori estimator based on the EM algorithm performs better than the conventional EM approach and minimum mean square error baselines in medium to high signal-to-noise ratio regions.

A Hardware Architecture for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces with Minimal Active Elements for Explicit Channel Estimation

Intelligent surfaces comprising of cost effective, nearly passive, and reconfigurable unit elements are lately gaining increasing interest due to their potential in enabling fully programmable wireless environments. They are envisioned to offer environmental intelligence for diverse communication objectives, when coated on various objects of the deployment area of interest. To achieve this overarching goal, the channels where the Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are involved need to be in principle estimated. However, this is a challenging task with the currently available hardware RIS architectures requiring lengthy training periods among the network nodes utilizing RIS-assisted wireless communication. In this paper, we present a novel RIS architecture comprising of any number of passive reflecting elements, a simple controller for their adjustable configuration, and a single Radio Frequency (RF) chain for baseband measurements. Capitalizing on this architecture and assuming sparse wireless channels in the beamspace domain, we present an alternating optimization approach for explicit estimation of the channel gains at the RIS elements attached to the single RF chain. Representative simulation results demonstrate the channel estimation accuracy and achievable end-to-end performance for various training lengths and numbers of reflecting unit elements.

Continuous Real-Time Detection of Quasiparticle Trapping in Aluminum Nanobridge Josephson Junctions

Nonequilibrium quasiparticles are ubiquitous in superconducting electronics. These quasiparticles can trap in the internal Andreev bound states of a phase-biased Josephson junction, providing a mechanism for studying their presence and behavior. We characterize a quasiparticle trapping detector device based on a two-junction aluminum nanobridge superconducting quantum interference device incorporated into a transmission-line resonator. When flux-biased, distinct resonant frequencies develop depending on the trapped quasiparticle number. We demonstrate continuous detection of up to 3 trapped quasiparticles, with detection of a trapped quasiparticle with signal-to-noise ratio of 27 in 5 $μ$s. We describe initial measurements of quasiparticle behavior and discuss the possible optimization and application of such detector devices.

Energy Efficiency Maximization in Millimeter Wave Hybrid MIMO Systems for 5G and Beyond

At millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies, the higher cost and power consumption of hardware components in multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems do not allow beamforming entirely at the baseband with a separate radio frequency (RF) chain for each antenna. In such scenarios, to enable spatial multiplexing, hybrid beamforming, which uses phase shifters to connect a fewer number of RF chains to a large number of antennas is a cost effective and energy-saving alternative. This paper describes our research on fully adaptive transceivers that adapt their behaviour on a frame-by-frame basis, so that a mmWave hybrid MIMO system always operates in the most energy efficient manner. Exhaustive search based brute force approach is computationally intensive, so we study fractional programming as a low-cost alternative to solve the problem which maximizes energy efficiency. The performance results indicate that the resulting mmWave hybrid MIMO transceiver achieves significantly improved energy efficiency results compared to the baseline cases involving analogue-only or digital-only signal processing solutions, and shows performance trade-offs with the brute force approach.

Joint Bit Allocation and Hybrid Beamforming Optimization for Energy Efficient Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

In this paper, we aim to design highly energy efficient end-to-end communication for millimeter wave multiple-input multiple-output systems. This is done by jointly optimizing the digital-to-analog converter (DAC)/analog-to-digital converter (ADC) bit resolutions and hybrid beamforming matrices. The novel decomposition of the hybrid precoder and the hybrid combiner to three parts is introduced at the transmitter (TX) and the receiver (RX), respectively, representing the analog precoder/combiner matrix, the DAC/ADC bit resolution matrix and the baseband precoder/combiner matrix. The unknown matrices are computed as a solution to the matrix factorization problem where the optimal fully digital precoder or combiner is approximated by the product of these matrices. A novel and efficient solution based on the alternating direction method of multipliers is proposed to solve these problems at both the TX and the RX. The simulation results show that the proposed solution, where the DAC/ADC bit allocation is dynamic during operation, achieves higher energy efficiency when compared with existing benchmark techniques that use fixed DAC/ADC bit resolutions.

Energy Efficient ADC Bit Allocation and Hybrid Combining for Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

Low resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) can be employed to improve the energy efficiency (EE) of a wireless receiver since the power consumption of each ADC is exponentially related to its sampling resolution and the hardware complexity. In this paper, we aim to jointly optimize the sampling resolution, i.e., the number of ADC bits, and analog/digital hybrid combiner matrices which provides highly energy efficient solutions for millimeter wave multiple-input multiple output systems. A novel decomposition of the hybrid combiner to three parts is introduced: the analog combiner matrix, the bit resolution matrix and the baseband combiner matrix. The unknown matrices are computed as the solution to a matrix factorization problem where the optimal, fully digital combiner is approximated by the product of these matrices. An efficient solution based on the alternating direction method of multipliers is proposed to solve this problem. The simulation results show that the proposed solution achieves high EE performance when compared with existing benchmark techniques that use fixed ADC resolutions.

Massive MIMO Channel Estimation for Millimeter Wave Systems via Matrix Completion

Millimeter Wave (mmWave) massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems realizing directive beamforming require reliable estimation of the wireless propagation channel. However, mmWave channels are characterized by high variability that severely challenges their recovery over short training periods. Current channel estimation techniques exploit either the channel sparsity in the beamspace domain or its low rank property in the antenna domain, nevertheless, they still require large numbers of training symbols for satisfactory performance. In this paper, we present a novel channel estimation algorithm that jointly exploits the latter two properties of mmWave channels to provide more accurate recovery, especially for shorter training intervals. The proposed iterative algorithm is based on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) and provides the global optimum solution to the considered convex mmWave channel estimation problem with fast convergence properties.

Adaptive Windowing for ICI Mitigation in Doubly Selective Channels with Unknown Statistics

In doubly selective channels, receiver windowing constitutes an effective technique for enhancing the banded structure of the frequency-domain channel matrix, and thus improving the effectiveness of a banded equalizer for intercarrier interference (ICI) mitigation. A common window design technique, which performs close to optimal, is based on the criterion of maximum average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). The optimality of this technique has been verified for stationary channels with perfectly known statistics. However, in cases where this assumption does not hold, a near optimal performance can be achieved at the expense of high complexity cost. To overcome these limitations, an adaptive windowing technique is proposed that is able to track the optimal receiver window offering low-complexity requirements. Through simulation experiments it has been verified that the proposed technique is able to adapt to the varying channel statistics with increased robustness to channel modeling errors.
