Characterization of second type plane foliations using Newton polygons

In this article we characterize the foliations that have the same Newton polygon that their union of formal separatrices, they are the foliations called of the second type. In the case of cuspidal foliations studied by Loray, we precise this characterization using the Poincaré-Hopf index. This index also characterizes the cuspidal foliations having the same desingularization that the union of its separatrices. Finally we give necessary and sufficient conditions when these cuspidal foliations are generalized curves, and a characterization when they have only one separatrix.

Ultrametric spaces of branches on arborescent singularities

Let $S$ be a normal complex analytic surface singularity. We say that $S$ is arborescent if the dual graph of any resolution of it is a tree. Whenever $A,B$ are distinct branches on $S$, we denote by $A \cdot B$ their intersection number in the sense of Mumford. If $L$ is a fixed branch, we define $U_L(A,B)= (L \cdot A)(L \cdot B)(A \cdot B)^{-1}$ when $A \neq B$ and $U_L(A,A) =0$ otherwise. We generalize a theorem of Płoski concerning smooth germs of surfaces, by proving that whenever $S$ is arborescent, then $U_L$ is an ultrametric on the set of branches of $S$ different from $L$. We compute the maximum of $U_L$, which gives an analog of a theorem of Teissier. We show that $U_L$ encodes topological information about the structure of the embedded resolutions of any finite set of branches. This generalizes a theorem of Favre and Jonsson concerning the case when both $S$ and $L$ are smooth. We generalize also from smooth germs to arbitrary arborescent ones their valuative interpretation of the dual trees of the resolutions of $S$. Our proofs are based in an essential way on a determinantal identity of Eisenbud and Neumann.

The valuative tree is the projective limit of Eggers-Wall trees

Consider a germ $C$ of reduced curve on a smooth germ $S$ of complex analytic surface. Assume that $C$ contains a smooth branch $L$. Using the Newton-Puiseux series of $C$ relative to any coordinate system $(x,y)$ on $S$ such that $L$ is the $y$-axis, one may define the {\em Eggers-Wall tree} $Θ_L(C)$ of $C$ relative to $L$. Its ends are labeled by the branches of $C$ and it is endowed with three natural functions measuring the characteristic exponents of the previous Newton-Puiseux series, their denominators and contact orders. The main objective of this paper is to embed canonically $Θ_L(C)$ into Favre and Jonsson's valuative tree $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{V})$ of real-valued semivaluations of $S$ up to scalar multiplication, and to show that this embedding identifies the three natural functions on $Θ_L(C)$ as pullbacks of other naturally defined functions on $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{V})$. As a consequence, we prove an inversion theorem generalizing the well-known Abhyankar-Zariski inversion theorem concerning one branch: if $L'$ is a second smooth branch of $C$, then the valuative embeddings of the Eggers-Wall trees $Θ_{L'}(C)$ and $Θ_L(C)$ identify them canonically, their associated triples of functions being easily expressible in terms of each other. We prove also that the space $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{V})$ is the projective limit of Eggers-Wall trees over all choices of curves $C$. As a supplementary result, we explain how to pass from $Θ_L(C)$ to an associated splice diagram.

On the intersection multiplicity of plane branches

We prove an intersection formula for two plane branches in terms of their semigroups and key polynomials. Then we provide a strong version of Bayer's theorem on the set of intersection numbers of two branches and apply it to the logarithmic distance in the space of branches.

Decompositions of the higher order polars of plane branches

\noindent In \cite{Casas} Casas-Alvero found decompositions of higher order polars of an irreducible plane curve generalizing the results of Merle. We improve his result giving a finer decomposition where we determine the topological type and the number of a kind of branches that we call {\em threshold semi-roots}.

The Milnor number of plane irreducible singularities in positive characteristic

\noindent Let $μ(f)$ resp. $c(f)$ be the Milnor number resp. the degree of the conductor of an irreducible power series $f\in \bK[[x,y]]$, where $\bK$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$. It is well-known that $μ(f)\geq c(f)$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality $μ(f)=c(f)$ in terms of the semigroup associated with $f$, provided that $p>\ord f$.

On the Abhyankar-Moh inequality

Abhyankar and Moh in their fundamental paper on the embeddings of the line in the plane proved an important inequality which can be stated in terms of the semigroup associated with the branch at infinity of a plane algebraic curve. In this note we study the semigroups of integers satisfying the Abhyankar-Moh inequality and give a simple proof of the Abhyankar-Moh embedding theorem.

Quasi-ordinary singularities: tree model, discriminant and irreducibility

Let $f(Y)\in K[[X_1,\dots,X_d]][Y]$ be a quasi-ordinary Weierstrass polynomial with coefficients in the ring of formal power series over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In this paper we study the discriminant $D_f$ of $f(Y)-V$, where $V$ is a new variable. We show that the Newton polytope of $D_f$ depends only on contacts between the roots of $f(Y)$. Then we prove that $f(Y)$ is irreducible if and only if the Newton polytope of $D_f$ satisfies some arithmetic conditions. Finally we generalize these results to quasi-ordinary power series.

Non-degeneracy of the discriminant

Let $(l,f):(C^2,0)\rightarrow (C^2,0)$ be the germ of a holomorphic mapping such that $l=0$ is a smooth curve which is not a branch of the singular curve $f=0$. The direct image of the critical locus of this mapping is called the discriminant curve. In this paper we study the pairs $(l,f)$ for which the discriminant curve is non-degenerate in the Kouchnirenko sense.

An approach to plane algebroid branches

Our aim is to reprove the basic results of the theory of branches of plane algebraic curves over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic. We do not use the Hamburger-Noether expansions. Our basic tool is the logarithmic distance on the set of branches satisfying the strong triangle inequality which permits to make calculations directly on the equations of branches.

On the approximate jacobian Newton diagrams of an irreducible plane curve

We introduce the notion of an approximate jacobian Newton diagram which is the jacobian Newton diagram of the morphism $(f^{(k)},f)$, where $f$ is a branch and $f^{(k)}$ is a characteristic approximate root of $f$. We prove that the set of all approximate jacobian Newton diagrams is a complete topological invariant. This generalizes theorems of Merle and Ephraim about the decomposition of the polar curve of a branch.

A discriminant criterion of irreducibility

In this paper we give a criterion of irreducibility for a complex power series in two variables, using the notion of jacobian Newton diagrams, defined with respect to any direction. Moreover we study the singularity at infinity of a plane affine curve with one point at infinity for which the global counterpart of our main result holds.
