Irreducibility criteria for the preimages of a transverse variety under endomorphisms of products of elliptic curves

We provide two different proofs of an irreducibility criterion for the preimages of a transverse subvariety of a product of elliptic curves under a diagonal endomorphism of sufficiently large degree. For curves, we present an arithmetic proof of the aforementioned irreducibility result, which enlightens connections to methods used in the context of the Torsion Anomalous Conjecture. On the other hand, we generalize the result for higher dimensional varieties using a more geometric approach. Finally, we give some applications of these results. More precisely, we establish the irreducibility of some explicit families of polynomials, we provide new estimates for the normalized heights of certain intersections and images, and we give new lower bounds for the essential minima of images.

Explicit height bounds for $K$-rational points on transverse curves in powers of elliptic curves

Let $C$ be an algebraic curve embedded transversally in a power $E^N$ of an elliptic curve $E$. In this article we produce a good explicit bound for the height of all the algebraic points on $C$ contained in the union of all proper algebraic subgroups of $E^N$. The method gives a totally explicit version of the Manin-Dam'janenko Theorem in the elliptic case and it is a generalisation of previous results only proved when $E$ does not have Complex Multiplication.

The explicit Mordell Conjecture for families of curves (with an appendix by M. Stoll)

In this article we prove the explicit Mordell Conjecture for large families of curves. In addition, we introduce a method, of easy application, to compute all rational points on curves of quite general shape and increasing genus. The method bases on some explicit and sharp estimates for the height of such rational points, and the bounds are small enough to successfully implement a computer search. As an evidence of the simplicity of its application, we present a variety of explicit examples and explain how to produce many others. In the appendix our method is compared in detail to the classical method of Manin-Demjanenko and the analysis of our explicit examples is carried to conclusion.

The elliptic torsion anomalous conjecture in codimension 2

The torsion anomalous conjecture states that for any variety V in an abelian variety there are only finitely many maximal V-torsion anomalous varieties. We prove this conjecture for V of codimension 2 in a product E^N of any elliptic curve E. This was known only when E has CM. We also give an effective upper bound for the normalized height of these maximal V-torsion anomalous varieties.

Explicit height bounds and the explicit Mordell-Lang Conjecture

We give an overview of some landmark theorems and recent conjectures in Diophantine Geometry. In the elliptic case, we prove some new bounds for torsion anomalous points and we clarify the implications of several height bounds on the effective Mordell-Lang Conjecture. We also explicitly bound the Neron-Tate height of the rational points of a family of curves of increasing genus.

An Explicit Manin-Dem'janenko theorem in elliptic curves

Let C be a curve of genus at least 2 imbedded in a product of elliptic curves. We give an explicit upper bound for the points in the intersection of C with the union of all algebraic subgroups of a certain codimension. As a corollary we obtain an explicit upper bound for the height of the rational points for some families of curves and an explicit version of the Manin-Dem'janenko method in products of elliptic curves

A sharp Bogomolov-type bound

We prove a sharp lower bound for the essential minimum of a non-translate variety in certain abelian varieties. This uses and generalises a result of Galateau. Our bound is a new step in direction of an abelian analogue by David and Philippon of a toric conjecture of Amoroso and David and has applications in the framework of anomalous intersections.

On the Explicit Torsion Anomalous Conjecture

The Torsion Anomalous Conjecture states that an irreducible variety $V$ embedded in a semi-abelian variety contains only finitely many maximal $V$-torsion anomalous varieties. In this paper we consider an irreducible variety embedded in a product of elliptic curves. Our main result provides a totally explicit bound for the Néron-Tate height of all maximal $V$-torsion anomalous points of relative codimension one, in the non CM case, and an analogous effective result in the CM case. As an application, we obtain the finiteness of such points. In addition, we deduce some new explicit results in the context of the effective Mordell-Lang Conjecture; in particular we bound the Néron-Tate height of the rational points of an explicit family of curves of increasing genus.

On torsion anomalous intersections

A deep conjecture on torsion anomalous varieties states that if $V$ is a weak-transverse variety in an abelian variety, then the complement $V^{ta}$ of all $V$-torsion anomalous varieties is open and dense in $V$. We prove some cases of this conjecture. We show that the $V$-torsion anomalous varieties of relative codimension one are non-dense in any weak-transverse variety $V$ embedded in a product of elliptic curves with CM. We give explicit uniform bounds in the dependence on $V$. As an immediate consequence we prove the conjecture for $V$ of codimension two in a product of CM elliptic curves. We also point out some implications on the effective Mordell-Lang Conjecture.

On the Torsion Anomalous Conjecture in CM abelian varieties

The Torsion Anomalous Conjecture (TAC) states that a subvariety V of an abelian variety A has only finitely many maximal torsion anomalous subvarieties. In this work we prove, with an effective method, some cases of the TAC when the ambient variety A has CM, generalising our previous results in products of CM elliptic curves. When V is a curve, we give new results and we deduce some implications on the effective Mordell-Lang Conjecture.

On local-global divisibility by $p^n$ in elliptic curves

Let $p$ be a prime number and let $ k $ be a number field, which does not contain the field $\mathbb{Q} (ζ_p + \bar{ζ_p})$. Let $\mathcal{E}$ be an elliptic curve defined over $k$. We prove that if there are no $k$-rational torsion points of exact order $p$ on $\E$, then the local-global principle holds for divisibility by $p^n$, with $n$ a natural number. As a consequence of the deep theorem of Merel, for $p$ larger than a constant depending only on the degree of $k$, there are no counterexamples to the local-global divisibility principle. Nice and deep works give explicit small constants for elliptic curves defined over a number field of degree at most 5 over $\mathbb{Q}.

On the minimal set for counterexamples to the local-global principle

We prove that only for powers of 2 and 3 could occur counterexamples to the local-global divisibility principle for elliptic curves defined over the rationals. For we refine our previous criterion for the validity of the principle. We also give an example that shows that the assumptions of our criterion are necessary.

On local-global divisibility by $p^2$ in elliptic curves

Let $ p $ be a prime lager than 3. Let $k$ be a number field, which does not contain the subfield of $\mathbb{Q} (ζ_{p^2})$ of degree $p$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Suppose that $\mathcal{E}$ is an elliptic curve defined over $k$. We prove that the existence of a counterexample to the local-global divisibility by $p^2$ in $\mathcal{E}$, assures the existence of a $k$-rational point of exact order $p$ in $\mathcal{E}$. Using the Merel Theorem, we then shrunk the known set of primes for which there could be a counterexample to the local-global divisibility by $p^2$.
