Alternative origins of polarity in compressively strained SrTiO3-RENiO3 capacitors

Since its original prediction 25 years ago, room-temperature out-of-plane ferroelectricity in compressively strained SrTiO3 remains an ongoing pursuit. In this work, we investigate the structural, electrical and electromechanical properties of highly strained epitaxial SrTiO3 capacitors with rare earth nickelate electrodes. The SrTiO3 layers experience compressive strains up to -3% and exhibit pronounced tetragonality, comparable to that of bulk PbTiO3. Variable-temperature electrical measurements and room-temperature piezoresponse force microscopy reveal butterfly-shaped capacitance-voltage hysteresis and domain-like electromechanical response typical of ferroelectric materials. However, the overall behavior is inconsistent with a stable ferroelectric state. We therefore propose an alternative mechanism for the observed polarity in our samples based on spatially inhomogeneous internal fields. Our first-principles calculations show that such fields may arise from charge discontinuities between the formally charged NdNiO3 layers and charge-neutral SrTiO3 layers.

First-order polarization process as an alternative to antiferroelectricity

Antiferroelectrics generate significant interest since their polarization versus electric field (PE) curves show typical double-hysteresis loops appealing for various applications. Unfortunately, antiferroelectrics are rare. In magnetic compounds, magnetization versus magnetic field (M-H) curves can show analogous double hysteresis loops not only in antiferromagnets but also in systems exhibiting field-induced first-order reorientation of the magnetization through a so-called first-order magnetization process. Here, we show that appealing double-hysteresis P-E loops can also appear from an unprecedented first-order polarization process. Focusing on non-polar CaTiO3, which can be turned ferroelectric under tensile strain, we study epitaxial thin films on differently-oriented NdGaO3 substrates using a combination of theoretical and experimental techniques. We uncover that a certain configuration exhibits double-hysteresis P-E loops that we rationalize from a field-induced abrupt rotation of the polarization. Such a first-order polarization process establishes a promising alternative pathway to achieve double hysterisis P-E loops appealing for practical applications.

Paramagnetically driven superconducting re-entrance in Eu-doped infinite layer nickelates

The breakthrough discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates, and subsequently in several superconducting nickelates with more complex layered structures, capped a search spanning more than two decades and opened an entirely new field of research. Significant efforts aim to increase the critical temperature, to determine the electronic structure of the system, the underlying pairing mechanism, and the similarities between this system and cuprates - Ni1+ in infinite-layer nickelates being isoelectronic to Cu2+ in high-Tc cuprates. Here, we explore the unique role of magnetic rare earth ions in superconducting Eu-doped NdNiO2. We show that the field-induced re-entrant superconductivity which we evidence in this compound is the result of a delicate balance between the competing effects of the Eu2+ and Nd3+ ions. Our analyses of the extraordinary Hall effect and modeling of the superconducting critical fields demonstrate that the influence of these ions on magneto-transport is only felt when they are polarized by a magnetic field.

Investigating the Electromechanical Behavior of Unconventionally Ferroelectric $Hf_{0.5}Zr_{0.5}O_{2}$-based Capacitors Through Operando Nanobeam X-ray Diffraction

Understanding various aspects of ferroelectricity in hafnia-based nanomaterials is of vital importance for the development of future non-volatile memory and logic devices. Here, the unconventional and weak electromechanical response of epitaxial $La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_{3}$/$Hf_{0.5}Zr_{0.5}O_{2}$/$La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_{3}$ ferroelectric capacitors is investigated, via the sensitivity offered by nanobeam X-ray diffraction experiments during application of electrical bias. It is shown that the pristine rhombohedral phase exhibits a negative linear piezoelectric effect with piezoelectric coefficient ($d_{33}$) ~ -0.5 to -0.8 pm$V^{-1}$. First-principles calculations support an intrinsic negative piezoresponse. In addition, it is found that the piezoelectric response is suppressed above the coercive voltage. For higher voltages, and with the onset of DC conductivity throughout the capacitor, a second-order effect is observed. The electromechanical response observed in this work is clearly different from that of normal ferroelectrics, again underlining the unconventional nature of polarization switching in the samples.
