Arithmetic-geometric mean, additive, and multiplicative contractions: New generalizations of the Banach contraction principle

We introduce new contraction conditions based on classical inequality between arithmetic and geometric means. By incorporating an auxiliary semimetric $δ$, we define arithmetic-geometric mean, multiplicative-type, and additive-type contractions. Connections between these types of contractions are found. Fixed point theorems are proved in the case of continuity of the above mentioned contractions. Under suitable regularity conditions on $δ$ (such as being d-regular, strongly d-regular, or d-lower bounded) we obtain constructive corollaries. Various examples demonstrating our results are constructed. It is shown that with certain caveats fixed point theorem for additive-type mappings is equivalent to the fixed point theorem for perturbed metric spaces, which were recently introduced by M. Jleli and B. Samet.

Periodic point theorem for generalized graphic contractions

Let $(X,d)$ be a nonempty metric space and let $n\in \mathbb N^+$. We shall say that $T\colon X\to X$ is a graphic contraction of order $n$ if there exists $α\in (0,1)$ such that the inequality $$ d(T^n x,T^{2n}x) \leqslant αd(x,T^nx) $$ holds for all $x\in X$. In the case $n=1$ these mapping are known as graphic contractions and are well studied. In the present paper, we establish a theorem on the existence of periodic points for a graphic contraction of order $n$. Examples of such mappings having different properties are constructed.

Best Proximity Point Results for Perimetric Contractions

This paper has two aims, first one is to introduce special kind of proximal contractions guaranteeing a finite number of best proximity points, and second one is to derive best proximity point results for perimetric contractions. To meet these two aims, we introduce two new proximal contractions: perimetric proximal contractions of the first and the second kind, and derive best proximity point results for these mappings. We establish that for these particular mappings, best proximity points are not necessarily unique; however, we provide an upper bound, proving that at most two such points can exist. To establish the validity of our results, we provide illustrative examples demonstrating that these newly defined mappings can possess unique or exactly two best proximity points.

Fixed point results for multipoint Kannan-type mappings

We introduce and study a new type of mappings in metric spaces termed $n$-point Kannan-type mappings. A fixed-point theorem is proved for these mappings. In general case such mappings are discontinuous in the domain but necessarily continuous at fixed points. Conditions under which usual Kannan mappings and mapping contracting the total pairwise distances between $n$ points are $n$-point Kannan-type mappings are found. It is shown that additional conditions of asymptotic regularity and continuity allow to extend the value of the contraction coefficient in fixed-point theorems for $n$-point Kannan-type mappings.

Fixed point results for single and multi-valued three-points contractions

In this paper, we are concerned with the study of the existence of fixed points for single and multi-valued three-points contractions. Namely, we first introduce a new class of single-valued mappings defined on a metric space equipped with three metrics. A fixed point theorem is established for such mappings. The obtained result recovers that established recently by the second author [J. Fixed Point Theory Appl. 25 (2023) 74] for the class of single-valued mappings contracting perimeters of triangles. We next extend our study by introducing the class of multivalued three points contractions. A fixed point theorem, which is a multi-valued version of that obtained in the above reference, is established. Some examples showing the validity of our obtained results are provided.

On quasisymmetric mappings between ultrametric spaces

In 1980 P. Tukia and J. Väisälä in seminal paper [P. Tukia and J. Väisälä, Quasisymmetric embeddings of metric spaces, Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn., Ser. A I, Math. 5, 97--114 (1980)] extended a concept of quasisymmetric mapping known from the theory of quasiconformal mappings to the case of general metric spaces. They also found an estimation for the ratio of diameters of two subsets which are images of two bounded subsets of a metric space under a quasisymmetric mapping. We improve this estimation for the case of ultrametric spaces. It was also shown that the image of an ultrametric space under an $η$-quasisymmetric mapping with $η(1)=1$ is again an ultrametric space. In the case of finite ultrametric spaces it is proved that such mappings are ball-preserving.

On the uniqueness of continuation of a partially defined metric

The problem of continuation of a partially defined metric can be efficiently studied using graph theory. Let $G=G(V,E)$ be an undirected graph with the set of vertices $V$ and the set of edges $E$. A necessary and sufficient condition under which the weight $w\colon E\to\mathbb R^+$ on the graph $G$ has a unique continuation to a metric $d\colon V\times V\to\mathbb R^+$ is found.

On generalizations of some fixed point theorems in semimetric spaces with triangle functions

In the present paper, we prove generalizations of Banach, Kannan, Chatterjea, Ćirić-Reich-Rus fixed point theorems, as well as of the fixed point theorem for mappings contracting perimeters of triangles. We consider corresponding mappings in semimetric spaces with triangle functions introduced by M. Bessenyei and Z. Páles. Such an approach allows us to derive corollaries for various types of semimetric spaces including metric spaces, ultrametric spaces, b-metric spaces etc. The significance of these generalized theorems extends across multiple disciplines, including optimization, mathematical modeling, and computer science. They may serve to establish stability conditions, demonstrate the existence of optimal solutions, and improve algorithm design.

Three point analogue of Ćirić-Reich-Rus type mappings with non-unique fixed points

In this paper, we introduce a three-point analogue of Ćirić-Reich-Rus type mappings, termed as generalized Ćirić-Reich-Rus type mappings. We demonstrate that these mappings generally exhibit discontinuity within their domain of definition but necessitate continuity at their fixed points. We showcase the existence and non-uniqueness of fixed points for these generalized Ćirić-Reich-Rus type mappings. By imposing additional conditions, specifically asymptotic regularity and continuity, we extend the applicability of fixed-point theorems to a broader class of mappings. Finally, we obtain two fixed point theorems for generalized Ćirić-Reich-Rus type mappings in metric spaces that are not necessarily complete.

On quasisymmetric mappings in semimetric spaces

The class of quasisymmetric mappings on the real axis was first introduced by A. Beurling and L. V. Ahlfors in 1956. In 1980 P. Tukia and J. Väisälä considered these mappings between general metric spaces. In our paper we generalize the concept of quasisymmetric mappings to the case of general semimetric spaces and study some properties of these mappings. In particular, conditions under which quasisymmetric mappings preserve triangle functions, Ptolemy's inequality and the relation ``to lie between'' are found. Considering quasisymmetric mappings between semimetric spaces with different triangle functions we have found a new estimation for the ratio of diameters of two subsets, which are images of two bounded subsets. This result generalizes the well-known Tukia-Väisälä inequality. Moreover, we study connections between quasisymmetric mappings and weak similarities which are a special class of mappings between semimetric spaces.

The existence of continuations for different types of metrics

The problems of continuation of a partially defined metric and a partially defined ultrametric were considered in (O. Dovgoshey, O. Martio and M. Vuorinen, Metrization of weighted graphs, Ann. Comb., 17:455--476, 2013) and (A. A. Dovgoshey and E. A. Petrov, Subdominant pseudoultrametric on graphs, Sb. Math., 204:1131--1151, 2013), respectively. Using the language of graph theory we generalize the criteria of existence of continuation obtained in these papers. For these purposes we use the concept of a triangle function introduced by M. Bessenyei and Z. Páles in (M. Bessenyei and Z. Páles, A contraction principle in semimetric spaces, J. Nonlinear Convex Anal., 18:515--524, 2017), which gives a generalization of the triangle inequality in metric spaces. The obtained result allows us to get criteria of the existence of continuation for a wide class of semimetrics including not only metrics and ultrametrics, but also multiplicative metrics and semimetrics with power triangle inequality. Moreover, the explicit formula for the maximal continuations is also obtained.

Weak similarities of finite ultrametric and semimetric spaces

Weak similarities form a special class of mappings between semimetric spaces. Two semimetric spaces $X$ and $Y$ are weakly similar if there exists a weak similarity $Φ\colon X\to Y$. We find a structural characteristic of finite ultrametric spaces for which the isomorphism of its representing trees implies a weak similarity of the spaces. We also find conditions under which the Hasse diagrams of balleans of finite semimetric spaces are isomorphic.

On a weighted generalization of Kendall's tau distance

We introduce a metric on the set of permutations of given order, which is a weighted generalization of Kendall's $τ$ rank distance and study its properties. Using the edge graph of a permutohedron, we give a criterion which guarantees that a permutation lies metrically between another two fixed permutations. In addition, the conditions under which four points from the resulting metric space form a pseudolinear quadruple were found.

Ordinal spaces

Ordinal data analysis is an interesting direction in machine learning. It mainly deals with data for which only the relationships `$<$', `$=$', `$>$' between pairs of points are known. We do an attempt of formalizing structures behind ordinal data analysis by introducing the notion of ordinal spaces on the base of a strict axiomatic approach. For these spaces we study general properties as isomorphism conditions, connections with metric spaces, embeddability in Euclidean spaces, topological properties etc.

Minimum spanning paths and Hausdorff distance in finite ultrametric spaces

It is shown that a minimum weight spanning tree of a finite ultrametric space can be always found in the form of path. As a canonical representing tree such path uniquely defines the whole space and, moreover, it has much more simple structure. Thus, minimum spanning paths are a convenient tool for studying finite ultrametric spaces. To demonstrate this we use them for characterization of some known classes of ultrametric spaces. The explicit formula for Hausdorff distance in finite ultrametric spaces is also found. Moreover, the possibility of using minimum spanning paths for finding this distance is shown.

Perimetric Contraction on Polygons and Related Fixed Point Theorems

In the present paper, a new type of mappings called perimetric contractions on $k$-polygons is introduced. These contractions can be viewed as a generalization of mappings that contracts perimeters of triangles. A fixed point theorem for this type of mappings in a complete metric space is established. Achieving a fixed point necessitates the avoidance of periodic points of prime period $2,3,\cdots, k-1$. The class of contraction mappings is encompassed by perimeter-based mappings, leading to the recovery of Banach's fixed point theorem as a direct outcome from our main result. A sufficient condition to guarantee the uniqueness of the fixed point is also provided. Moreover, we introduce the Kannan type perimetric contractions on $k$-polygons, establishing a fixed point theorem and a sufficient uniqueness condition. The relationship between these contractions, generalized Kannan type mappings, and mappings contracting the perimeters on $k$-polygons is investigated. Several examples are illustrated to support the validity of our main results.

On three-point generalizations of Banach and Edelstein fixed point theorems

Let $X$ be a metric space. Recently in~[1] it was considered a new type of mappings $T\colon X\to X$ which can be characterized as mappings contracting perimeters of triangles. These mappings are defined by the condition based on the mapping of three points of the space instead of two, as it is adopted in many fixed-point theorems. In the present paper we consider so-called $(F,G)$-contracting mappings, which form a more general class of mappings than mappings contracting perimeters of triangles. The fixed-point theorem for these mappings is proved. We prove also a fixed-point theorem for mappings contracting perimeters of triangles in the sense of Edelstein.

A three point extension of Chatterjea's fixed point theorem with at most two fixed points

In this paper, we introduce a new category of mappings within metric spaces, specifically focusing on three-point analogs of the well-established Chatterjea type mappings. We demonstrate that Chatterjea type mappings and their three-point analogs are different classes of mappings. A fixed point theorem for generalized Chatterjea type mappings is established. It is shown that these mappings are continuous at fixed point. Connections between generalized Chatterjea type mappings, generalized Kannan type mappings, Chatterjea type mappings, and mappings contracting perimeters of triangles are found. Additionally, we derive two fixed point theorems for generalized Chatterjea type mappings in metric spaces, even when completeness is not mandatory.
